I'd try that seat out if I were you, before buying it.........

I have a similar seat in my cockpit, they aren't really designed for comfort !

With the result that I've just bought a real car seat off a well known auction site from a real car, a 306 GTi, to try and save my arse from going numb !

PS. I hear you about portrush, although the Ferrari 355 Challenge was awe inspiring when I was a kid ! Like driving a real Ferrari...............

Nick

Hi, hope this becomes an enjoyable read for you Nick and others.

The screens like most of the hardware shown is already purchased and Ive been using them with FM3. Costing me £170 each at the time. They arnt bad, good for TN panels actually in viewing angles and response time although limited a bit in true blackness. For triple monitors 24" seems ideal, if you go bigger you have to be further back, that can have issues with all the screens aligning in FM3 and of course further back then increases the floor space needed.

My screens are only about 3" deep but your going to love the monitor mounting solution Ive come up with.
Spoilers, lights, speedo, vents were purchased from online auctions.

Hi Doc,

F355 Deluxe, now their was an arcade unit, indeed!!!!
A local shopping centre had one for a while many years back but now a local Karting centre in "Broughshane" has one of those huge "Hexatech" simulators.

Maybe you missed it but as stated in the thread I already have the seat purchased.
Comfort is definately not an issue with the "Sebring Pro" model I have. Even compared to the Monaco seat in my aging "GamePod" racing frame (now acting as my PC Seat) it has a good degree of comfort.

Not only that it is better than the seat on the "RSC" which is probably the best seat going on a prebuilt sim cockpit.

Although yeah your right for general motorsport comfort is not always a major factor and care should be taken when buying your seat if spending a lot on them. If anything the seat Ive bought is sold more because it is aparently the lightest seat in its class according to its manufacturers. It is very snug fitting mind you and it certainly feels your locked into it although I find that helps encourage a racey feel when sat in it.

More Info On Seat Purchase
Let me explain to people here my purchase decision as for anyone going this d.i.y route seats are expensive and it deserves maybe some more information.
I put a great deal of thought into my cockpit, hell Ive been banging on about doing this for nearly two years so dont think for a moment this project is some guy throwing a lot of money just at things willy nilly. A great deal of consideration has been put into certain factors/purchases maybe more than people may imagine so below I will explain....

Audible Benifits
One of the reasons I went for this seat over say a nice and probably comfier recliner is that with the seat being a snug fit it helps the immersion which as Ive said is a large part of my projects requirements. As you can see the project its going to have great response from ingame audio. Ive not seen a cockpit on any forums in two years searching go the route Im trying combining large bass woofers and multiple Buttkickers for immersion. Its expensive is a likely reason and kinda crazy annother.

In choosing a snug fitting bucket seat the "bass/rumble" from the subs/transducers will then be felt better and travel through the players body. So its including the shoulders and back rather than just shake/vibrate their backside as Ive seen in most cockpits using Buttkickers or subwoofers under/behind a seat. Thats also why I have implemented the dual 12" subs to fire directly into the back of the seat. This will also allow a desired effect/strength from the audio to be achieved but importantly achieve it more efficently with a lower volume level reducing vibrations throughout the base of the frame and into the house etc. I believe this will help fully immerse the player from testing I have done with Buttkickers because if volume is too high on a single unit it tends to bottom out and the effect can be too strong becoming annoying or uncomfortable.

Visual Benifits
The seat was also choosen because of its head supports, with the triple monitors these head supports act as a shield blocking the peripheral view of the room. So sitting in the seat the edges of the headrests are in the very widest part of the players peripheral vision. It means simply that you can have it that nothing detracts from the monitors if the seat position is set accordingly sitting in the seat only the monitors are visible, no room distractions and vision is totally focused on the screens. Again this is just for immersive purposes, I dont know if I would say it really helps concentration but I believe this is an advantage for helping to maximise the immersion aspects possible.

Apart from these factors for me personally I think it is a gorgeous seat and styling is a major factor of this project as well.

I would encourage for people to look on auction sites indeed.
Just last week I seen a Merc SL full electrics leather seat (although in light grey and a bit worse for wear) for a buy now of £100
Bargins can be found.

Thanks for the interest, please do ask questions if anything comes to mind..

Sorry. missed where you said you already had the seat.

I understand where you are coming from with the buttkicker thing, I have mine mounted directly under my old seat, after a while it has a wierd effect on the, well, internal organs so to speak, and can cause a certain amount of discomfort !

Hopefully when new seat arrives i can re-locate it somewhere more suitable.

Have you come up with a way to join the chrome tubing yet? I toyed with the idea of building a frame using Aluminium tubing, but I couldn't find an easy way of "welding" it all together, so went for wood !

BTW, you should check out ASUS's VW246H.

1080p
2ms response time
20000:1 cr
300 cd/m2
HDMI/DVI/VGA/SPDIF

Its a best seller on Newegg and its cheap (220USD on Amazon free shipping)

They also have the VE246H, new release. About the same price. Higher Contrast Ratio but lower brightness.

Well Im glad you can vouch for what Im referring to about the Buttkickers and a single unit with too excessive volumes.

About these chrome surround parts they serve no purpose other than styling.
With them not being structural I can get away with a simple solution. This tubing is the same as used in many wardrobes for hanging clothes.

My plan is to suspended this surround about 1-2" up off the floor of the cockpit base. Ive considered two options for possible mounting. One could be simply using a metal coupler strip, drill each end and have this bolted to hold two pieces together. To suspend it a similar bracket can be used and be attached underneath the base platform. Ive been thinking it might be best to also add rubber washers to help minimise vibrations and possible rattling.

The other and more elegant option is to use metal components already available for wardrobe fittings. A hole can be drilled for these to come up from underneath the base platform.

This will give you some ideas :)

Im still waiting on some metal components to arrive yet...

I'm kind of curious why have two wheel options when the Fanatec Turbo S covers both consoles?

I bought my G25 several years ago.
Just fancied getting a full size wheel for it really and choice is always a good thing I suppose.
Also think it would look nice.

Those specs are about identical to what the iiyama monitors I already have are. I think though my iiyama model has a slimmer bezel/surround which is better when combining 3 by reducing the gap between the actual monitors. I recall at the time looking last year when I purchased in trying to get a model that had a slimmer frame.

More parts arrived today, maybe photos later tonight...

Update
Here are some other metal components that just arrived!
The build will have no welding whatsoever but mainly components bolted/screwed together.
Using mostly ready available materials will make the actual building less work of course, it just takes a little imagination and searching for components that are suitable.

Four of the corner feet below were ordered as these will bolt to the main base. I can remove the bottom plastic foot they have and then have a wooden shelf bolted to the top. This shelf will have the seat runners and seat attached. They are 150mm high and these are often used on sofa's/upholstery.

Below is one of the 60mm Chrome supports ordered for the wheel platform section.
A similar pair is being used to attach to the rear Subaru wing. Often these are used for breakfast bars and on tables.

Very interesting project - I'm looking forward to following this one. Are you keeping a record of the costs?

Once again thanks...

Costs are being accounted for yeah. Maybe people would like to see costs broke down when its finished?

Ive got costs coming im not looking forward to, such as having the spoiler/vents spray painted in black (spoilers are currently Subaru blue).
Have even toyed with the idea do I keep them blue and go with a white base?

However I keep going back to wanting chrome and black as it looks mean and striking. Plus it also matches the monitors and seat etc which were bought at the time with gloss black in mind.
What Ive found is even though the design is pretty much completed on paper Im still adding upgrades and new ideas to it.

Darn Mr Latte, you've made me sign up to yet another forum! Ok really looking forward to seeing this on come come together. I still cant visualise what its going to look like, but I guess thats one of the surprises you have in store... :)

Hi Pal,

No pressure on me at all eh...
The guessing will keep it interesting, maybe...

Oh btw did you get your wee parcel?

Well now have most of the metal components delivered.

Been working out what wood supplies I may need for the base.
Im considering making the base platform structure with 4x2 wood, screw this together and then add 9mm MDF to the top and bottom.

Looking to get a local supplier to cut it in sections which will save time and effort.
This can then be finished off with black perspex sheeting.

Base platforms should be about 4.5" or approx 11cm high.

Looking to maybe get building started by next weekend.

Maybe some high grip/non slip surface for the base rather than PVC sheet, or checker plate aluminium sheeting?

Oh I should of said the foot section will have something to stop slippage.
Got any links to the checker plate sheeting? Ive looked at ideas for that before but not sure wether to just use rubber mats or that steel mesh tred you see in places.

Ive been told to spray both spoilers and the air cossie vents will be £200
Ouch, that hurts but in reality was expecting in around that. Still its going to be a tough £200 to swallow as all it does is change a colour.

The wood though is coming in cheaper than expected.
PS3 stands arrived today look excellent and fit in perfect with the unique monitor supports Im for making.

I reckon a couple of cans of spraypaint and some cheap bedsheets (to protect from dust) would do almost the same job. You could then spend the other £190 on, hmmm, not sure really, but you could pick up a very high quality load cell - I have been looking for a review on them, but have not found one yet.

Mr. Latte I was wondering what you do for a living? are you donald trump in disguise? HA looks good man cant wait to see the finished results! 👍

I wish, just a small business owner struggling in the recession.
Ive recently been told im mental though, so maybe their is a degree of madness and this definately has become like an addiction to me.
Just yesterday alone Ive added £36 worth of new things/ideas that arent really needed, impulse purchases.

The Fanatec wheel clamp arrived today as did Chilicokes cool looking wheel adapter for G25.

Regards the painting, Im scared in making a right hash of it.

looking forward to seeing how this comes out. I suspect it will be a Jurassic racing chassis "spared no expense" :)

Reading through the thread, I like the ideas, and can relate to a lot of the influences that's going into this. Only wish I had the ability to put my own Ideas into fabrication.. I suspect that would be the let down..

Isn't it Just a shame that Fanatec don't produce a Wheel with just a wheel release clamp on it.. so that you can then attach your own wheel of choice, They could even offer Wheels, or provide a power and usb interface on the wheel connector to allow you to make your own!

Good luck with the build, please remember to share the highs and lows as well. It's good to learn from others if things don't go quite to plan ( not wishing you any low points of course 👍 )

Cheers

Just wanted to pop in a wish you luck Latte. I've got a very simple wooden cockpit for use with my PWTS and am currently considering going with a three screen setup. But what you have looks insane. Looking forward to seeing how you progress.

Oh hi lads...
Its nice to read the support, really.

Guys do keep coming back this project will be showing the building as it takes place.
Problems, mistakes, fixes and whatever happens if you want to see it well I will show it.

If something doesnt seem right or any of you want to either question or criticise then please speak your mind. Its more enjoyable for me to talk about it than just post updates of images. I want to show some creativity and originality that not all cockpits have to be wooden or metal frames or boxes. They can look fun and exciting. Maybe it will influence others and well thats part of the reason for doing the thread this way.

I said to "DR" recently one of my concerns is ensuring the d.i.y is upto a good enough standard as Im not really any good at general d.i.y
Some tricky things need to be done as well.

It really is a "process" going through the D.I.Y phase. My design looked very different when it was first conceived, but as I started building I made quite a few changes. I still have to add the dashboard (once the cockpit is in it's final resting place), console (with mount for CS Handbrake), a few Buttkicker mounts (front and back sections), paneling, painting, carpet, possibly leather wrapping some components, CF dead pedal (I have a few CF panels lying around from my days of CF molding work), integrated MP3 stereo system (separate from 5.1 game audio setup) with touch screen MP3 player integrated into upper console..... and on... and on.... and on....

Obsession isn't a strong enough word for it.

The Fanatec wheel clamp arrived today...

Feel free to send me some pictures of that wheel clamp. :sly:

I'd love to see how well everything mounts up, how much higher the wheel sits off of the table than hard mounting, placement of the shifter mount, etc...

as did Chilicokes cool looking wheel adapter for G25.

Do you have a wheel in mind yet?

;)

Will get the photos up for you my good man if not tonight by the weekend.
Its heavy but noticed mine a but rough in the paint work.

The threaded bolt for tightening hangs down 5" which may be an issue but it wouldnt be impossible to use a shorter alternative to to mod the original.

Gonna see how the base of G25 and the PWTS compares on this for you.

I quite liked the look of the Sparco one I posted, err didnt get any comments regards it but even though its not full leather its only about £80
The black silver is what I liked about it to tone in with the whole cockpit.

I may however have to concentrate on modifying the G25 as a secondary plan later as costs are spiraling on the project.

Awesome. 👍

Looking forward to it.

I'm also interested in seeing what you end up with for a wheel to fit over that nice new G25 adapter.

;)

I really am looking forward to see more of your project too 👍 ...all the parts might seem a little overwhelming still at this point as I don't have the big picture you have in your head ;)

That's the main reason I have not asked much questions yet.. need to see more of your vision to discuss it more accurately :) The parts looks suberb, and for sure if you can throw this much money to the project you will get something special  But I do feel that you do not fit the "regular gamer" category, and therefore you have very special limits & requirements of how your rig should look (& maybe even feel) like.

But keep the reports coming.. there are many interested people here even if they aren't posting anything.

👍 👍

I hate this situation, having lots of bits but now needing the time to get the wood for the base and then to have that made before I can start working the actual cockpit itself.

Seems the Skytec amp I purchased is faulty, very little sound coming out of it.
So will need to further test/check to see if thats the case. I tried it with powering my Buttkicker and one of the 12" woofers to and virtually nothing. Weird as all are matching in 4ohms.

Also the PASSAT lights ordered from auction site after 3 weeks have not turned up so have to chase that. These are annoying, such setbacks play with your mind.

However not all bad news as I have a few small purchases this week:

New Purchases:
Came across some "Aluminium Cable Clips" these will match in well with the frame, part of my pet hate "cables" so want to ensure cables from the monitors and 3xPS3 are nice and tidy. As small a factor this is its the lengths I will go not to overlook anything to maintain a high standard in presentation. One priority is to hide cables as best possible something I hated regards Playseats and other cockpits that offer next to no cable managment in their designs, does it bother others?

Ive decided to try and incorporate a joystick with big buttons.
Purchased a cheapo Blaze one for £20. It has the PS3 colour buttons.
This is with PS3 in mind and to an extent GT5.
It can be used for easier more comfortable control of PS3 menus or in games. This means I wont need two hands to be on a wheel navigating menus with D Pad etc or being hunched up at the wheel all the time. When the seat gets mounted I will decide on the joystick positioning. Wont rule out at the moment having it even dismantled and built into the dash but could have it placed more beside the seat in a handbrake position or even on on some mount were it can swivel round/ be positioned. I suppose this will also go towards that "arcade unit" look and isnt something Ive seen many others try to add into their cockpits. It might later influence a few of you guys to do the same lets see how it turns out.

Photos will follow on Sunday

Heres somebody's video of the Blaze Joystick.

I drop in at least once a day to read and think about yours and others posts. That goes for your threads too Timppaq. 👍

I am on the verge of starting my build too. All the ideas I can get is good, as I believe 2-3-4 heads are better than 1. :D
