Small update:

Wood arrived, well most of it as they forgot to deliver the 2x4 timber and only delivered the precut MDF sheets for the base. :dunce:

I cant finalise the back of the cockpit design until I properly test the subwoofers. Their positioning effects the whole rear design and wing supported uprights. Think I may need to utilise some metal to channel rumble from the subwoofers wooden housing to the underside of the seat to help maintain the subwoofer vibrations. Its an important part of the project and needs to be tested. Additionally Im trying to have a design to house the subwoofer and support the wing that doesnt look bulky or boxy.

The 2nd amplifer to power the smaller Buttkickers arrived yesterday too. I dont have the 2x smaller Buttkickers bought yet.
So took the amp home to test with the 2x 12" Subs last night and thankfully this one isnt faulty.

Performance seems fine, packs a decent punch.
In testing I found with its onboard equaliser that gave more control over the bass/frequencies. With different games/music having varying bass response perhaps this will come in handy making it easier to apply +/- and achieve a bass response thats ideal. Its a benifit I hadnt originally considered but already proves to be a good feature.

*If your considering adding Buttkickers and opting for seperate amplification rather than a full Buttkicker package. Based on this test Id recommend an amplifer with an EQ or at least Bass/Tone controls.

If I get the return sorted for the faulty amp I may just opt for another of these.
Its cheaper, smaller and also quieter fan...

Heres an early pic of my idea for the "Clubsport Pedals"

Couldnt believe my luck as a friend of a friend sold me some "Clubsport Pedal" spares.
They came from a set that was damaged beyond repair.

For the record I tried to buy these seperate from Fanatec on more than one occassion but they dont supply them and I couldnt purchase them via the website.
(EDIT they can in new colours)

I guess I got lucky.

Only temp positioning for idea...

As mentioned earlier I want to invert these into a removable platform so they can be swapped over with the G25 inverted pedals if wanted/needed.

Looks good. Although they definitely need to be angled towards the driver (ala inverted G25/G27 Pedals). The current position makes the pedals too flat. Similar to how most golf carts have their pedals coming out of the floor.

Yes they do...

and in different colors to boot.

Yeath the pedals if anything in that pic were leaning back making the angle seem off.

Your right I should of rephrased my comment, I dont think they sell the spares in the original colour though. Im not fond on the new coloured sets but everyone to their own.
Thanks for correcting mate.

That would explain it. I'll probably be running mine somewhere near a 20 Degree angle. Not much of an angle, but then again, the CSP's don't require as much angle as the G25/G27.

Ahhh...

You're right, they don't sell the original silver plates, but I'm sure they might in the near future. I would like to do something similar, and I (like you) prefer the original aluminum look.

;)

You might want to mount your seat on rubber bushings to isolate and enhance the butt kicker's effect. But with the butt kicker attached to the seat not the frame. Just a suggestion.

The amp & the pedals look really good 👍 I hope you get your woods delivered soon so we can start seeing more of the "whole" thing 👍

This seems to be the "golden" time for cockpit building. Everybody is making new cockpits while waiting for GT5 :)

My list to wood suplier leaves tomorrow and i will order a FK racing seat next week also.

It sure is! At least something good about '5' taking so long... Remember to post pics when done 👍

Yeah lots of testing has to be done to get something that feels good.
I have some spare Buttkicker isolaters from the BKA 300 package left over.
Dont want to screw directly to the seat though. Prefer to put it on the underside of the wooden mounting shelf.

Anyways I need a wooden shelf to attach the seat because the seat runners arnt as wide apart as bucket seat mounts.
Therefore the seat has to mount to the wooden shelf and the wooden shelf to the seat runners...

Confused yet? :)

Ta mate, bit annoyed they didnt deliver it all.

I hope to start on the monitor section next week. At least give you guys actual photos of something coming together.
Also might of found an alternative to the "acrylic" for the finishing of the base.
"Polypropylene" seems to be less expensive and Ive found an online supplier that cuts to exact sizes, mmmmm

Havnt ordered yet but been pricing what it would cost for most of the base.
Going to order a sample to see what its like first and later a decision will be made if to just paint the wood instead.
I feel its a lot of money but could enchance the finish greatly.

Came across these on the link "Nick" posted earlier for lights. Ive seen them before of course but the component with "start" button caught my eye.
This will go towards having that nice looking dash. Cosmetic components really, maybe Im crazy but these are def going in beside the wheel/dash area.
If I ever decide to incoprorate PC for sim games then of course these could become functional.

Damn I realy like this, pure class! It will go towards that car/arcade unit appearance...

Niiiiiice...

I really like that second unit with the big red (launch Nuclear Missile!) switch. That's going to look amazing. I might do something similar as my cockpit evolves.

;)

Man all you people and your awesome cockpits. And me with no space and no spare money. :(

Still fun to watch you guys have fun tho!! :D

The polypropylene is a nice product. 👍
At 3mm thick, it seems a waste of product and cost if it's for covering the MDF.
I would have thought 1mm would be plenty.

Thats good to hear thanks if you or anyone knows about plastics that would be great to get advice. Ive seen 0.9mm available and more research would be needed in finding the best supplier or price. I prefer a cut to measure option too though.

I take it a smooth finish in this is similar to an acrylic in gloss finish?
Maybe need to order a sample as I do want a shiny smooth finish. That will look killer against all the chrome and match the glossy black of the subwoofers.....

If you know any in the UK that be great if you could link.

This site may be of use even if it is in Australia.
Here is an online supplier but not as wide range.

I guess it would depend though on how you looking at attaching it to the mdf? eg if you were to screw it on 3mm would probably be better to give you some room to countersink the screws so they are flush with the plastic and also to lower the risk of it cracking, but if you were just to silicon/glue yeah 1mm would be more than enough

Looks like this cockpit will have no limits with regards too cost. Can you post some production photos. I'm dying to see what it looks like.

Oh trust me their are indeed limits mate.

Components are a major part of the costs but as stated in the beginning Ive been collecting those for almost 2 years with a cockpit in mind

Im not looking forward to many other expenses that will be needing done to finish it. Also by wanting the dual subs and additional Buttkickers with amplification is a £500 "that could be cool" idea that was really only recently added.

Not much to report lately.

The rest of the wood for the base arrived today, almost a week late mind.
Not a problem except this lorry arrives with 3 lengths of 2"x4" timber thats not cut as requested but instead their full approx 15FT long, aghhhhhh!

Been a frustrating week at work as well so not in best form.

All being well I should have the beginnings of the front monitor base and uprights done within a week or so. Still some metal fittings to arrive.
This front section shouldnt be too difficult as Ive devised a neat way of easily allowing the monitors to be positioned for alignment in triple screens which was an earlier concern.
Looking good on paper is one thing having it built and tested is another so yes I expect some issues as well.

Sorry nothing to really show yet lads......
It is coming and then people are welcome to criticise or question elements of the design/build and if Im making good choices or not.
Id actually prefer people to question things than not say much at all. Fuctional but with some degree of difference and style is the target.

Besides I flaff on about it so lets see if its going to be pretty good or a load of crap eh.

Small update this week...

Just been doing some more messing about this weekend with the positioning of where the subs will be going and finalising the way I want the back end of the cockpit to appear.
Have to say after several attempts Ive been finding it difficult to get a design that isnt ending up looking like a big boxy back end. The majority of the cockpit is very minimal in its actual supports for monitors and wheel. So housing these 12" subs has been a challenge keeping the design in with the rest of the cockpit.

What Ive come up with so far:
  • Subaru wing/spoiler will be 3/4 up the height of the seat
  • Supported by dual 32mm chrome poles that attach to the main subwoofer housing unit section
  • Sub unit will be angled to fire into the seat (bit like the earlier photos showing sub testing)
  • Beneath the sub unit I will have a seperate shelf for both of the amplifers with the blue neon lighting (shown previously)
  • Amplifiers position to allow easy usage of volume/equaliser controls

I have found with this temporary positioning the lighting from the amplifiers is quite striking against the glossy back of the bucket seat. Good in a way as this all matches the glossy black of the subs and the considered acrylic or plastic finish on the cockpit base.

Additional lighting will be incorporated and Ive seen a few possible purchases.

Still have in my mind white underlighting for the base. Some nice examples of this used in kitchens and some usage of white LEDs shinging on the chrome should look really smart.

Lighting is not a thing I have seen many incorporate much to improve the looks of their cockpits. So Im willing to give it a go but feel it will really set off the finished cockpit.

Heres a couple of pics showing how additonal lighting USB neon will be used to light up the subwoofers (on/off or sound activated).
So far this is only with blue but I will be adding in red to have the cockpit use the G T colours.
Just as a nice touch to add to the styling.

Other than that this week I ordered more metal bits needed and 2x 6 way power extension leads.
The cockpit will require at least 10 sockets for all the equipment being used but Id like to have a couple spare.

All that hardware thumping under you, you might need a fan to cool your arse down

Quite true but have you felt UK weather lately.
Most of the year it might be a benifit to help keep me warm and not require actual room heating to be on, joking of course...

Ahhh thats maybe a good line to tell the wife, "hey luv really im saving our oil heating" :sly:

Looks stunning so far, I apologise if you have already been asked this a million times, but when do you think it will be finished and running by? :)
