Project Scorpio Becomes Xbox One X, Releases November 7 at $499XBOne

You play games based on whether they can win GOTY? Must be a boring life.

BTW Sea of Thieves is easily GOTY worthy.

The issue is that there is this new and powerful console and nothing that is really taking advantage of it. There isn't anything that looks to be on the level of an Uncharted, God of War, Halo, Gears of War, Metro, Final Fantasy, Zelda, etc.. Triple A titles that have huge set piece moments that look best-in-clas, sound best-in-class and stir emotions similar to a big budget movie would. And unfortunately yes, because of limited time to play video games, the AAA titles tend to get preferential treatment from me (it has to be a really special indy game to take my attention away).

Sea of Thieves does look very interesting, but I doubt it'll be in the conversation of GOTY. Gotta say though, I have been waiting for years to play some Cuphead - that game looks so unique and is dripping with style.

Forza 7 seems to be running at full 4K. AC Origins runs with checkerboarding + dynamic resolution

No one ever claimed every game would be 4K native, in fact Microsoft said that games that were 720p would use 4K checkerboarding and dynamic resolutions.(They claimed that pretty much every 900p and 1080p game would run at 4K native; Assassin's Creed ran at 720p on Xbox One.

However, these games also started development before they even got Xbox One X development kits so none are really built directly for Xbox One X.

It could be that the Xbone X will upscale games similarly to how the Xbone S upscales, just that much better than the S because the X is more powerful. This way devs don't have to update their games with an 'Xbone X' patch like the ps4 pro patches.

Forza 7 is designed around the Xbone X

Forza 7 was designed for Xbox One X(stop calling it Xbone), but it started development before the first kits were even available and was designed first on PC.

Likely the same story with Anthem.

As far as upscaling goes, dynamic resolution is definitely going to be a thing but they doesn't mean games won't hit 4K native most of the time if not almost the entire time expect for certain areas.

If I remember correctly, I think they are rolling out patches like that. There was a news article that stated that Forza Horizon will receive a free "Xbox One X update."

A free update to take advantage of the new console can only improve the experience. The open world racer is just one of several first-party games getting an update of this kind. A One X enhancement patch is due for another 30 third-party titles too.

I've been reading for a couple years now that Microsoft has been wanting to get away from console generations. I think we're starting to see the beginnings of that. I think we're going to see it more and more being like PC, and the settings you can play the game on.

It looks like from now on, just about any game you buy will be playable on any future Xbox console. Which I think is a really great thing, no more of a game becoming useless once you get a new console, or having to hold on to an old console just so you can play those games.

I don't know how that will work with developers, If after awhile they will automatically just start designing games for the newer and more powerful consoles, and if you have an older Xbox console, you'll eventually have to upgrade to a better one, to play the latest and greatest games. Kind of like updating your PC with new video cards etc. or if eventually you'll be able to upgrade your console itself, which would be pretty neat too.

I think that's the direction things are going to start heading, actually are already heading.

@Techy, thanks for your input and knowledge on televisions. One thing I'm not seeing, is many televisions with freesync capabilities, but I have my mind made up on the television I'm buying.

The LG OLED55c7v. It's $2500 now, but has come down $1000 since the beginning of the year, and will probably drop another $500 before the Xbox One x comes out. It has super low input Lag, and all the other features you listed except for free sync.

33 3rd party games will have free Xbox One X updates.

However, every game played on Xbox One X, unlike PS4 Pro, can take advantage of the full hardware power without an update.

That means games like Assassin's Creed Unity(which would never get a Xbox One X patch) and Project Cars will run better no matter what. This is also true for any game that uses dynamic resolution, so they will run at the max resolution and framerate on Xbox One X without a patch. Backwards compatible games take advantage of this too, so if there is a game that maybe isn't maxed framerate on an Xbox One will probably be maxed on Xbox One X.(Call of Duty 3 comes to mind as a BC game that almost runs maxed out on Xbox One but not quite but could on Xbox One X.)

Another awesome thing is that texture filtering is done at the system level now, so every single game on Xbox One X(360 BC, Xbox One, OG BC) will have 16x AF texture filtering without any work from the developer.

This means games like Forza Motorsport 5 & 6 will instantly look better when it comes to texture filtering, an area Forza often lacks.

If you buy an Xbox One X, no matter what a developer does your games are going to run better and likely look better; the Xbox One X patches are just the cherry on top; sadly the same cannot be said for PS4 Pro.

Well for the Pro there is the Boost mode... so there's that going for it. Though reports indicate the improvement is pretty minor, so Sony has to bet on devs delivering Pro patches for their games.

Boost mode doesn't have wide support; honestly this whole boost mode thing is the entirely wrong way to go about it.

There shouldn't be a boost mode, it should just be how it works.

The crazy thing is that Sony aren't even testing every game to make sure they work well with boost mode, that's why it can be turned on and off. Microsoft is and has been testing pretty much every game to make sure they run as good or better without any issues and if it does break the game; it's just turned off automatically.

I'm paraphrasing but I believe Microsoft said "Gamers shouldn't have to worry about whether or not the game is going to work or have to deal with experimenting with a boost mode, that's the job of the platform holder. Games should just be able to buy an Xbox One X, plug it in using the same connections as an Xbox One S and play the same exact copies of games they already have but better without fiddling with anything."

my 2c's about those that think console is expensive:

if you read technicals, or even can read what technical people say, you basically get around 50% more power overall than ps4 pro (memory, bandwidth, gpu power differences all add up), and freesync. (or, performance roughly in the ball park of a 1070-ish pc)
and a 4k disc player on top, for 100bucks difference. (although I think ps4 pro will drop price come scorpio is out)
And system-wide bullshoty 1080p for everything that is 4k or 4k-ish, until proper 4k hdr freesync tv's reach everybody's preferred budget. oh, and better performance for all existing games.

it will reach the 399 price, maybe next year's holidays, probably even lower later on. but its not that this time you are asked for 500 for a console with a kinect on top. very different situations.

Mentioning this because it keeps being left out, you don't necessary need a 4K TV to experience the benefits from 4K resolution because the system supports supersampling which acts as an extremely effective anti-aliasing, this is very useful if you are using a monitor.

As things stand, the Xbox One X will come with a 1-month games pass trial. That's over 100 games available from the moment you set up... Although 10 of them will probably be worth playing. :P

I suppose that's a good sampler for people to experience a lot of games right off the bat without having to buy any games at launch.

I think for $399 it would have been an incredible deal, and MS probably wouldn't have sold many 1Ses. At $499 they're still going to sell plenty, and they'll get the rest of the people in 6 months when it drops to $399 for Christmas (and is still an incredible deal).

I am not sure they are going to be on sale for 399$ anytime soon. I think we can expect 50$ price drop for Holiday season for all consoles. Honestly Microsoft just do not have games to sell this console.
