PS3 General Discussion

Well as i have posted before, i will be getting the 60gb version. Samdu, you just reminded me that i have a psp and that will be another advantage of the 60gb version. But exactly what is this "remote play" thing, as i am a little confused.

Anyway, im waiting on my tax money to come in, as soon as it does, ill have my PS3!

The remote play thing is a touch of a misnomer. At least when game consoles are the subject at hand. Remote play lets you play video and/or audio from the PS3 on the PSP over the network. IIRC, right now it's only over the local network, but it's supposed to eventually be over the Internet as well. Kind of like Sony's Location Free TV thing.

Well, that would be cool. Or while im in first period with nothing else to do. Our school has a pretty good wireless connection.

It will be when you're in another state near a Wi-Fi connection and you download / stream your music to your PSP from your PS3 from across the US.

Would something like that really need Wi-Fi on the PS3? I would think the PS3 would only need to be connected to the internet, wired or wireless...

The remote connect from around the world, no, it would just have to be online. But from your house, yes. Let's also not judge everything from NOW. The GC and GBA had some cool options which were severely limited due to cables and / or additional hardware needed. If a person owns a PSP and a PS3, there are a ton of different possibilities, it's just up to developers. Imagine playing a Mech game where you use your PSP as your control panel and it displays your hud and everything, while your big screen is HUD free with beautiful visuals etc. It would be sleek, and offer some pretty cool control.

Supposedly there was a demonstration at E3 or something where they used the PSP as the rearview mirror for F1. I don't know if that will be in the final game, and it seems more like a gimmick than something useful.

Think: if you are going on a week-long trip, are you really going to want to leave your $600 PS3 on the entire time just so you don't have to buy another memory stick for your PSP?

So I would look at my lap to see some options of what to do. No thanks. It just doesn't make sense. I would rather have everything on-screen so I don't have to look away to see something.

The PS3 is connected to the internet all the time, supposedly. When you shut it off, it goes into stand-by.

And even if you have to keep it on all the time, I would.

You must not play many action RPG's. I do and what I dont like is the screen being coved by inventory menus and in multiplayer the action does not stop. Dungeon Siege 2, Diablo1/2, Champoins of Norrath and other Action RPGs could benifit from something like that.Football games could use this while picking plays and calling audibles. Veiw your active pay without revealing the play like madden and NFL2k5 has. I have an imagination so I could think of a few things.

And you dont have to look away just simply raise your hands . Its no different than driving a car and looking in a side mirror. your eyes leave the road for a second.

Don't bother, Duck will likely come up with some way to say something bad about hte functionality, who knows. I dont' even like PSP, and I think it's a good idea.

I'm just tossing out ideas. I'd like to take advantage of such a possible capability. But I'd rather have PSP 2 or 1.5 or whatever within the next year and a half for those things.

I can see the benefit of something like Madden, where you can pick your plays without your opponent seeing it, but any action title where I have to read through a menu and have my eyes off the screen while doing it seems like an annoyance, and possibly a good way to get killed. I'd rather not glance away for a second only to look up and see a rocket headed for me.

But until I tried it I wouldn't completely shoot it down. I think the pace of the game woudl determine how useful or detrimental this could be to the game.

Reminds me of the Dreamcast VMU. The memory cards on the DC (VMUs) had a screen on them so that you could do things like choose plays in a football game without your opponent seeing what you were choosing. It was a nifty feature.

I'm not totally sold on the current implementation of the connection between the PS3 and the PSP, but I really can't wait to see where they go with it. As long as they never require it, I'm cool with it.

Well, i never wanted a PSP. My sister won it in some contest that she got entered into for joining a bands fanclub. She doesnt care much for it so she just gave it to me. I have had it since it was first available, but didnt use it because i already beat the one game that it came with (spiderman 2) and i just couldnt see spending money on it. Well, now that they have come up with new updates for it, its very usefull in class and its online capabilities are cool. I just think that it would be something that I may use. Just an added bonus of me getting a PS3. Even if the PS3 didnt have any relationship with the PSP, i would still get it. Just a perk.

The PS3 does not stay connected to the internet when you go into standby mode.

It would be extremly easy for Sony to add a "Wake on LAN" command so every time the PS3 recieved a signal from the PSP from WLAN or LAN that it would turn on, and then they would simply have to implement a feature to turn off the PS3 via the PSP remotely. It's very easy. My PC can be turned on remotely when in stand by, and I can access most of my files that I share via remote connect.

This assumes that the NIC in the PS3 is WOL capable. Probably is, most are these day, but it's not a given.

I doubt that developers will want to take functionality of the psp with the ps3 too far since not too many people have them... However since I have one I'm hoping they use it to the max :sly:

Even the Wii has something like this. When in stand-by, it picks up new updates and then the blue light glows.

Umm, i would think that they would want to take it far, to convince people that have PS3's to get PSP's and vice versa. The more features the PSP has, the more desirable it will be.

Do you even know how many have been sold? More than 10million. Even if 3% of that number used PS3-PSP link for a game thats a useable figure. Thats 300k copies of that one game sold for psp connectivity alone.

Actually, it's a tad more than 20 million.

I know, but i was keeping it on the safe side, you know with the sold VS, shipped arguement they anounce 10 million shipped a year ago.
