PS3 General Discussion

I would love to smash a PS3.

<-- You.

Thats why Madden gamers hate the 2K games.
Hey now! Them are fightin' words. :D

I would be called a Madden gamer, but only because I wanted a football game for my Wii. I probably shouldn't have bought my Wii during playoffs. Trust me, when 2K10 comes out (unless EA renews their license :nervous:) I will drop Madden faster than I did Halo.

I still have one major question that no one has managed to answer and thats about the PS3 being region free....

Is there a 100% guarentee that it will play PS3 games from anywhere in the world on any console? Sony are saying games maybe region locked which is vage and odd... so far have all US games worked on a Japaniese console?

I havent found any testing of this on the net or anything! and when the PAL launch comes what about all the people who have imported PS3's... also does the online aspect work anywhere in the world?

I really want to buy a Japaniese PS3 and then buy UK games because for one its cheaper and also because I may not be in the UK for long soon.....

This is really important because I dont wana buy a UK PS3 then move to another country it would be better to have a US or Japanese console.....

It's different from game to game, honestly. Some are, some are not. But, for the most part, the NA and JPN regions share the same region code and are fully BC with either console, but AFAIK, the EU consoles will be "region 2" (NA and JPN are "region 1"). So, I wouldn't think any EU games would work on a NA or JPN console, and the other way around.

And 2K games gets a head start on getting the license back with All Pro Football 2K8. I like the idea and if its game engine is great they could pressure the NFL to drop EA's exclusive.

I hope that's not the case. It seems that PS3 games are not locked per se - IGN but I don't think it's written in stone. There's certainly no longer the problem with differing displays to be considered between PAL regions and NTSC (for HD Ready TV's in Europe all tv's must display 720p and 1080i @50Hz and 60Hz) I guess we'll just wait and see once the Euro PS3 is launched and find out then.

Yeah, I believe you're correct. Would this chart be any indication?

It's for BD movies, but nonetheless it seems to apply to games as well.

Then again, Sony was boasting a while ago that the PS3 would be region free. Hmm...

The thing is, though, that the PS3 is region free. It has always been up to the developers to encode regional lockout, except in the rare cases (Famicom to NES, Mega Drive to Genesis) where the cartridge physically wouldn't fit.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the hardware is region free, but they can not prevent software distributors from region coding their releases - both for movies and games.

Besides for pricing controls, software distributors use region coding because they sometimes do not have global distrbution rights for specific titles. This is at least true for the film industry. For example, Universal owns the distribution rights to the award winning classic "The Deer Hunter" in North America, but Warner Bros. owns the distribution rights in Europe.

This is still an improvment over DVD, which also had region coding for the hardware.

It is true for both.
I can think of a couple examples later, but one that comes to mind immediately is the Lunar series.
I believe that is the exact reason backwards compatible games in particular aren't region free on the PS3, owing to those limited distribution rights of the time the specific game was made.

On that blue ray chart PAL people seem to have the rougest deal only been able to buy games from literally themselves! All thats in it is Europe, Africa and Australia...... NTSC is far more favorable having the US and most of Asia bar China....

Arg this so frustrating... guess I am going to have to buy a Japanese PS3 and find a method of playing UK games....... unless Hong Kong is Blue Ray region 2? does anyone know?

Is that not the old DVD region map? This link from Wikipedia matches the other one Duck posted.
Anyway it's not too bad for PAL countries as release dates are better. Before there could be months of waiting for a DVD to come out in the UK. But now it's far sooner. Also there's not so much variance in quality either. There are some DVDs from say Japan that are better quality than US DVDs. It doesn't worry me much. Here in the UK I'm fairly happy with the releases of HD movies. But, yes, it could be better...

Whoah. The original GBA only sold 60 copies last week... O_o. The DS Lite has a 66% percent increase. Again O-O

This is freaky. The PS3 sold less than 20k units in Japan last week (Jan. 22nd - 28th).

I also saw like 10 60GB PS3s at Target yesterday.

Waaay too freaky.
Waaay to early to freak.

A) It's the end of January, a historically bad month for sales.

B) Sony is doing a great job keeping up with sales, but even so store inventories vary. My neighbor said that every time he has gone by Best Buy they have been out of 60GB PS3's despite getting new shipments every week. Many online retailers are still taking back orders. It is all anecdotal, and jumping to conclusions by just few samples isn't worth getting freaked out over.

C) The PS3 is actually selling close to the same rate as the PS2 did, which frankly I never expected, and don't think it will ever equal the popularity of the PS2.. which coincidentally sold more units this week than the PS3, but at 1/5th the price that doesn't mean anything other than it is still a great value purchase.

D) The PS3 is selling as fast as the XB360 in North America.

E) The PS3 took about a month to sell more consoles than XB360 sold in an entire year in Japan... now that's freaky.... lest we forget that the Japanese market accounts for the second largest in the world for both hardware and software sales, and first per capita.

Really... it is way to early for anything to be freaky, especially based on one week's sales at the end of January.... that said, Microsoft would kill to sell 20k XB360s in one month let alone a week in Japan. :)

Nonetheless, it's a new console in the companies' homeland.

I really hate to um...insult you, but you seriously have so little understanding of the industry as a whole, that you jump to conclusions and make ridiculous statements. THe media pretty much drives you any which way they want.

Is that freaky? Hell no. A 700% software sales jump for Blu-Ray movies is freaky.

No one is buying the PS3 because it's January, new software doesn't hit for a month and a half, and VF5 isn't out yet. When VF5 hits, I can promise you Sony will probably push around 25K minimum for that week in Japan.

But it's whatever, you listen to the media like it's your watch dog, so it's whatever.

I believe Hong Kong is actually within region 3.

In theory it should be the same as China but as it was a british colony up till 1997 it still runs on UK power and uses PAL...... however with the PS2 and now with the PS3 Hong Kong is more likely to adopt the Japaniese NTSCJ region meaning it will be region 1 blue ray and work with US games... I just need confirmation... It would be great if it were region 2 but it wont because its too near Japan.....

Then the Wikipedia is wrong :grumpy:
