PS3 General Discussion

It's type of standardized cable used in Europe.

Just keep in mind, with gold-plated interconnectors, like that SCART cable mentioned, they are only beneficial if the connectors you attach them to are also gold-plated. If a gold-plated connector is connected to a nickel-plated connector it will not only offer no additional performance benefit, but it will corrode the nickel-plate at an accelerated rate. The most important thing is to always match the metals. 👍

Strange then because the gold plated SCART offers much better pictures than the standard one that came with the PS2.

Does your TV have a gold-plated SCART input connector? If not, and it is nickel I'm not sure.

I'm not very familiar with the specifics of SCART cable as I have never needed it, but to try and help you I looked at the Wiki listing for SCART and here is what I found that relates to your question:

Quality differences exist in SCART cables. While a proper SCART cable uses miniature coax cables for the video signals, cheap SCART cables often use plain wires for all signals, resulting in a loss of image quality and greatly reducing the maximum cable length. A common problem is that a TV outputs a composite video signal from its internal tuner, and this is induced or cross-talked onto an incoming video signal due to inadequate or non-existent screening on a cheap SCART cable; the result is ghostly images or shimmering superimposed on the incoming signal. To non-destructively verify if a SCART cable uses coax cables, one can unscrew the strain relief at the SCART connector and fold open the plastic shell.

Although using higher-quality cables might help in reducing a 'ghosting' effect, a more permanent method is to remove pin 19 from the SCART plug that is put into the TV. Pin 19 is Video Out, and removing it prevents a signal from being broadcast by the TV into the cable in the first place, so it cannot cross-talk with the incoming signal. Cheaper SCART plugs can sometimes have the pins pushed inside the connector housing so as to remove it in a non-destructive manner (and thus allowing for its replacement in the future should the need arise by simply unscrewing the housing and pushing the pin back through its hole), though sometimes the pins are fixed in place on the inside by glue or rubber and can only be removed by forcefully twisting them off entirely. Generally though, for a standalone TV there is no need for video output on the TV end of the SCART plug, so in the majority of cases removing it completely should not be a problem. Whichever way it is done, however, once it is the SCART is rendered incapable of transmitting a video signal from that end of the cable, so it would be wise to mark it as such for future reference.

Gold-plated SCART connectors, which do not corrode and deliver a cleaner signal, might be preferable, although they always cost more than nickel ones. However, gold-plated connectors only give better performance when both plug and socket are gold plated. Gold and nickel are galvanically very different metals, and although inserting a gold-plated plug into a nickel plated socket may make a small difference at first, any atmospheric moisture that is present near the connector will cause an electrolytic reaction between the dissimilar metals. This will result in the nickel-plated connector corroding much more rapidly than it would if both connectors were nickel-plated. For good long-term connection quality it is always better to use matching connector materials.
So it sounds like there could be more than one reason why your gold-plated SCART cable looks better, even if your TV only has a nickel-plated SCART input.

BTW: The DIY fix to the ghosting issue by removing the 19th pin sounds quite clever. 👍

Cheers for that, my TVs SCART input is just like the first one on the left on the Wiki page, quite standard.

I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this (I've not found anything) but Sony now have an official blog up...

http://blog.us.playstation.com/

...n ow while it is a SCEA site it does seem to be attracting worldwide feedback and its nice to have a place to voice our opinions. My only hope is that it becomes a blog in which candid and open discussion can take place, however only time will tell on that front.

Has downloading in the background while running F@H always been possible? I realised the other say that it does, but I remember when I first bought the PS3 it wouldn't do so... unless it was my network issues I was having at the time.

It was enabled in the 1.7 update.

EDIT: Also to the people here with Warhawk: the beta is getting extended.

:D

I wonder how much of a difference it would be if they used the full range HDMI mode. Still other than Spiderman 3 they all look the same with different contrast/brightness. Oblivion on the other hand is not really fair to compare.

Anyway, GameSpot made another of their 360 vs PS3 games comparison thing.
Whoo hoo, more comparisons done by the poorly informed. Just what the gaming community needs more of... :indiff:

Although it's funny how they say they claim the X360 edged out the PS3 with higher-resolution textures and better lighting... yet several of their own screenshots suggest otherwise... and they don't seem to understand the influence the display has on these 'tests'... which for comparisons sake is critical to reveal, and more so, making sure both systems are using the exact same inputs each properly calibrated to the display.

But most curious is how even their own screen shots of Armored Core 4 clearly show that the X360 edition's lighting is significantly inferior, losing a great deal of shadow detail that was clearly programmed into the game.

However, considering the unknowns in these "tests" it is certainly possible that they simply didn't calibrate the display for the Xbox edition, as it looks like from those comparisons that they didn't bother with any display calibrations. 👎

D-N, there's a Def Jam Icon comparison in there as well.
You don't trust your own comparison shots?

Just asking.

BTW: The Oblivion comparison shots are a drastic example of how obviously the color & hue settings have been monkeyed around with by the folks at GS:UK (either with the display or the screen grabs themselves). I rented oblivion and the colors were vivid, with a wide gamut and excellent contrast as well.

If you do a search for screen shots for the PS3 edition of Oblivion, you'll find countless numbers of shots that do not look anything like those shown in the GS:UK site.

Unfortunately their "comparison shots" are pretty much useless and most are likely inaccurate, and not representative of what these games actually look like on a properly calibrated display.

That Def Jam doesn't work on my PS3. I've downloaded it 3 times now, but after installation, when you select to play the game, it says it's corrupt...

Any other PAL PS3 users get this?

I get the same, its the only Demo (from any store) I have an issue with, and to be honest its not exactly bothered me.

What games?

Just Resistance and Motorstorm. I'll probably get Def Jam Icon off eBay eventually, just for kicks. (No pun intended. (Kinda.))

Someone should change the subheading for this forum, it seems a bit outdated.

When I play oblivion (which is pretty much all the time when I'm not at work, it looks nothing like that, especially with the Full range colors and I'm not even using 1080p

The Def Jam demo is region locked to the US. That's probably why it's not playing on PAL PS3s.

Meh.

I completely agree with you. Those screenshots look sooo washed out and way too bright. Even the video comparisons between the 360 version and the ps3 version clearly showed that the ps3 looked a lot better.

In ref to the comparison shots, I enjoy how they make no mention of the 360's black crush issue.

Personally, I think the Elite was made for all 360 games, since they both suffer from insane amounts of 'black crush'.

There's finally a reason for me to buy a PS3...I'm still not getting one though. :sly: Well, not yet.

That's what I'm talking about! Now if the online experience is solid, I just may pick this up. Even though I blow at Tekken now. :dopey:
Well, I am waiting to see if the US gets the update before I get Tekken 5 and I haven't played any fighting games since Tekken 3, so if you decide to get it let me know. We should be evenly matched.

I'm wondering...
When downloading games that cost money, how do you pay for them? I suppose credit card using online pay? :ouch:
Don't like that one bit.

Is there a Fee like Xbox Live's Gold and Silver accounts? 👎
Paying once a year is tolerable but even then I'd be interested to know how payments can be done.
I've never liked the idea of having to pay to play month to month or year to year. :indiff:

That said, I'd love to get a Tekken game online with "solid" gameplay. 👍 (free none the less!!!) I'm glad to hear Namco will keep it free to play after purchase. 👍

Btw, does anyone here have Armored Core 4? :mischievous:
(great reason for me to buy either system)

Yeah. There's going to be the prepaid PlayStation Card that works similar to the 1600 point XBL card that you see in stores, but that's only now starting to appear in Japan.

Kent, it's no different then buying a game from, say Amazon. All you are doing is purchasing the game, nothing more.

Also, Sony uses a system they call Wallet which gives you several account and payment options. For instance, you can set it up that when ever you want to download a game or content that is not free you can just make a one time purchase for that exact amount, that's what I do at least.

You can also manage each Users account, so let's say you have a young child and you want to give them $50 to spend how they like at the PS Store, then you can add $50 to their "Wallet" so that they can't spend more than what you add to their wallet. If you read the link I provided above on Sony's Wallet you can find a lot more information and detail on these different payment options.

It's actually a very impressive system and offers a great deal of flexibility, best of all though, the network, online play, messaging, audio/video chatting, game demos, trailers, etc are all free and require no monthly or yearly paid accounts.

The only time you have to pay for anything is if you want to purchase conent that isn't free, and once you do, you own it. There is no monthly useage charge.

I have Armored Core 4. If you're an AC fan, you will love it. Previous AC games were ridgid in movement, AC4 is much more fluid. All the customization is there and it looks best on PS3. The 360 has anisotropic filtering problems, the PS3 is extremly sharp.

Sony's Wallet system is very cool. Like D-N said, it adds funds only if you allow it to. Unlike Xbox Live, you can add the exact amount in your country's currency, no abstract "points".

Gametrailer's Bonus Round features the Playstation Network and how it compares to Xbox Live. This week it was Sony's turn, last week, Microsoft didn't do so well with the questions.

Yeah, just watched Part 2. Geoff didn't grill the PSN guy as much.

It'd be hilarious to get Nintendo on there though.

Explain that. I can only add increments, like $5, $10, etc. Not some precise amount like $3.28.

Yea it only lets you add in certain increments. But what Solid is saying is that instead of spending a certain amount of money, and getting a certain amount of "points" (i.e. the xbox live points), its just straight up currency.
