PS3 General Discussion

Yea it only lets you add in certain increments. But what Solid is saying is that instead of spending a certain amount of money, and getting a certain amount of "points" (i.e. the xbox live points), its just straight up currency.

Yeah, I see what you're saying.

Both systems suck - how about we skip the wallet and points and all of that BS and be able to pay for a single thing through a credit card?

If you 'buy' the content first, you can add the exact amount to you wallet when you checkout. If you add funds to your wallet first, you can only add increments.

I thought Geoff didn't grill Sony as hard as Microsoft because Sony wasn't spinning the questions. At least the Sony guy was honest to say that achievements and integrated Live functions were the best thing Microsoft had with their service. The Microsoft guy thought PSX games is what Sony offered the best... lame.

Is it possible to hook up an external hard drive?

I have a Maxtor 180gb drive that I store my MP3s, photos, and videos on. It has tons of movies recorded off HBO, television episodes, and televised race events recorded with my TV Tuner card on my PC. They would be great to have on my big TV without burning them to DVD. I can't make the PS3 see my external drive through the media sharing with my PC and plugging the drive into a USB port on the PS doesn't work either.

Is there something I need to do or am I stuck copying a multi-gigabyte video file to my video library when I want to see it?

Explain that. I can only add increments, like $5, $10, etc. Not some precise amount like $3.28.
That's because you are adding funds BEFORE purchasing. Try it the other way, like you would if you were buying a game off Amazon. By adding it to your cart, and then paying for it you can put in the exact total cost to your wallet, thus always leaving your balance at $0.

That's what you can do with the PSN. It is your choice whether you actually want to use the wallet system like a PayPal account with a balance. Otherwise you can just pay the exact cost of each game you buy, always leaving a balance of $0 in your wallet.

It has been this way since the PS3 came out and the PS Stores went online.

I hope this is now clear for all those thinking they are forced to put in more money in their virtual PSN wallets than they are needing to spend at any given time.

Your drive is formated to NTFS. The PS3 needs connected external drives to be formated as FAT32. As for media sharing, it should be able to see it. Make sure the external drive is shared under Windows.

As all my video files are larger than 2gb that change won't happen.

I have the sharing options set up (with the hand holding the drive icon). There might be more to it or I am thinking of the wrong thing. I'll have to mess with it some more. Thanks.

It would be possible if you were using Linux. You could connect an external NTFS drive, which should be able to be read out of the box. You need a third party driver to write to it, and I know one is available in Ubuntu.

Limit for FAT32 is 4GB.(not 2GB if you thought)
Either way, it was too small for my files. My smallest race video is 5.35gb, and that is after editing out the commercials.

Yellowdog on my PS3 or as my PC OS? I am contemplating doing Yellowdog. I'm just wanting do some research to see if it is something I will utilize or if it will just be taking up hard drive space.

Well, I got it fixed. It is reading the external drive over sharing now. I'm not sure what I did differently but I went back through the sharing and adding the drive folders to my library setup and it worked. I must have messed something up the first time around.

As an update I am loving my PS3. If I had the opportunity to hook one up at home before now I would have realized that it is well worth the money. I have managed to download practically every demo and it has changed my mind on a few things. Previously I never thought Resistance or Motorstorm would be something I would want to own, but my mind has quickly changed on that. F1:CE is confirmed as my first game purchase, once Gamefly gets it to me. I wish I could get the demo to work with my DFP peddles. And GT:HD is taking up way too much of my time. If I could just learn to drift properly.

So my list of games that I plan to get is:
F1:CE
Resistance: FOM
Motorstorm
Blast Factor
Go! Puzzles
Virtua Tennis 3 (as a cheap used or if they do Greatest Hits)
Various PS One games.
Tekken 5 (after the online is added)

DN, I know you suggested Calling All Cars, but after looking at the trailer video I don't know if it seems all that great. I would love a demo, but I didn't see one.

If anyone else has a quirky favorite they suggest I am open to suggestions.

And for anyone who looks at the price and wonders if the PS3 is worth it, take it from someone that thought the same thing at first: Yes.

CAC is an excellent party game. If you just play by yourself, it'll be a game where you play for 10 minutes once every two weeks for the next six months.

If you haven't bought Motorstorm yet, try to find it used on eBay for $40 or something. The gameplay is extremely good, but the amount of content (modes, tracks, etc) is appalling. Put that $20 you would save towards Oblivion or the upcoming MS DLC that'll make the game less barebones.

Anyway.

I saw this thread on GAF, and that reminded me. If you watched Geoff Keighley's interview with Aaron Greenburg, he mentioned that a multiplatform game having its 360 version delayed because of limitations of user-created DLC. Three games instantly come to mind: Haze, LittleBigPlanet, and Unreal Tournament 3. Haze doesn't look like a game that supports user-created content. LBP is published by Sony. So that comes down to UE3. Could the PS3 and PC versions come out before the 360 version? That's what it's looking like.

Robin /////, looks like your wish for bald space marines with GoW like graphics is coming true. :sly:

Duck, you should check Gamefly if you buy used often. Members can already get Motorstorm for $36.89. When it goes on sale for everyone it will probably be $27. That's what most PS3 games are starting at.

I'm already a member of GameFly (as of a few weeks ago). :sly:

Do they ship the game in its original box with the manual? Or just a cardboard slip?

Original box with manual, at least according to their site.

I'm thinking about subscribing.

Anybody know what's going on with Rainbow Six Vegas? I thought it was being released on the 20th. I didn't see it in the Sunday papers. What's up?

I buy used games from GameFly all the time. You get the case, manual, and everything else that came in the case in perfect condition. I am a Level 3 member and I can get Oblivion for $39.59 plus $5.00 off.

I assume you get the used disc then? How do the levels work?

Edit: Hah, we're on page 360. This thread could blow up at any moment now.

If you buy from the store it comes in its case, but if you do Keep It then they ship you the case and manual. I prefer to test games before I buy so all my purchases are Keep Its.

Yeah its used but I rented Tiger Woods the day it came out so I am cofident that its actually new.

The levels are a loyalty discount scheme where the longer you are a member the bigger the discount. Level 3 is reached after a year and I get 10% off everything and a $5 coupon every 3 months. Members also get free shipping.

Another thing they have is discounts for paying in advance and a partnership with an ad site that pays up to $10 of your subscription for watching commercials. I run that in the background at work.

I think the PS3 is the biggest pile of crap in the history of mankind and I love my 360 that never ever ever breaks and the Wii is great as well and I like Halo and Metal Gear Solid 4 sux unless it comes to 360.

   I think I lowered my IQ by 10 points writing that.

But I'm on Page 72, 100 posts per page FTW.

I assume you get the used disc then? How do the levels work?

Well, in my short experience with renting from them (SotC, Sonic Wii, Paper Mario Wii), the discs are flawless. If the discs you buy are anywhere near that level of quality, some people on eBay will be losing some business.

Rainbow Six: Vegas looks hawt. I hear it will include five exclusive online maps and the five add-on maps from Xbox Live.

Exclusive? Doubt it. They never said they'll be available only on PS3, just that there'll be 5 new maps that aren't on the Marketplace. Knowing Ubi, they'll slap those up in a few weeks for $10.

But hey, you're getting $20 worth of DLC for free on the disc. And a port that's up-to-par. 👍

could someone tell me what the procedure for resetting the system back to composite cables is without using the XMB? Doesn't it involve holding the power switch down for a certain amount of time?
