PS3 General Discussion

Well, now you know.. hehe. On the plus side, you can tell Sony that when you call them, that you've already tried resetting the system back to factory and the problem is still there.

Besides, it's better to try it and know than to just blindly send it off for repair, and forever wonder if you could have fixed it yourself. :)
Yeah, I'll have a bit more info so hopefully they don't take as long to find the problem and fix it.
Plus, anyone else that may come up with a similar situation will know it's not worth it to reset the PS3, and can use those 4 hours for something else. 👍

That sux big fat ostrich heavos. Sounds like it is time to bite the bullet and get that puppy back to Sony as fast as possible for repair.
Yes it does, my friend.
I meant to take it there today (not Sony, the store where I bought it - they'll send it to Sony), but my ex asked me for help on some stuff and I - acting like myself - went there to help. So, tomorrow it is, as soon as I get off work.
I'll be sure to keep you guys posted, and I'm also hoping that they'll tell me what was wrong with it after they fix it.
Hooray for warranties, or I'd be screwed right now...

Like the 360 has achievements for all the games, and gamerpoints and stuff. Does the PS3 have something like that?

Not looking to kick off a row im just curious:P

so whats the word on the in-game XMB
"e are happy to announce that we have heard your concern and are looking into the matter. Your call is very important to us and we hope you continue to enjoy your Playstation gaming experience."

No concrete date as of yet, but most people are saying in the summer when (supposedly) Firmware 2.4 comes out.
After handing out In-Shirt XMB T-shirts at GDC they better have it in 2.4, but they have not promised anything as the main goal of 2.4 is to get Blu-Ray 2.0 in place.

Well, they did promise in-game messaging so you can respond to message from your friend's list in-game.

Because of the way they just confirmed in-game messaging I have a feeling that full in-game XMB won't be there. But as I said, if it isn't close then those shirts were just a cruel joke.

I know that they just said in game communication, that's why I said "Supposedly"

From what I've read (this may be a little old), PS3 is supposed to get In-Game-VOIP through (what I'm guessing is) Skype.

From,
Chris.

I hope they don't use Skype, as you can already do a voice chat with the friend's list and many games have built in voice communications.

Heck, if you have the PS3 Eye you can do video chat.

Skype works on the PSP because it has no friends list or chat functionality, plus it allows it to work as a phone.

For the console though it seems pointless unless Skype is your only phone.

Plus, I don't have a Skype account and don't want to get one.

Ok, update on the busted PS3 Saga...

I've went to the store yesterday to leave it there for repair, but I ended up bringing it with me home again. Why?
Because they (or any other store, for that matter) don't serve as an intermediary between the customer and Sony. Everything PS related is dealt directly with Sony.

So, they gave me the phone number for the Portuguese Sony Playstation Help, I called and as soon as I explained what was happening, the guy checked and his reply was short: "You need a new one, that one's gone", he said.

I obviously got overcome with joy and felt blessed by the gods of Hi-Tech-Stuff right then and there. Especially knowing mine is the 60Gb, which is nowhere to be found.
So I begin to tell him that I don't want a 40Gb, a 80Gb or a 680Gb, I'd like it replaced by the exact same model as mine. No more, no less.
He replied saying they've got loads (!!!) of them for events such as the one that occurred with mine, so that would not be a problem at all.

To finish off, this is what's going to happen tomorrow:
I'll have to find a box to ship the PS3 in (the guy said I could not use the box in which it came to do this - pity, because I still have it);
Inside the box I'll put the PS3 and a paper with all the needed info he told me to, along with a copy of the proof of purchase;
On the outside of the box, I'll write some data and the malfunction code he provided me;
I'll call the phone number he gave me, belonging to SEUR (a Iberian transport company, like FedEx, UPS or similar) stating when and where to pick it up.

After that, he said it would take them 4 to 5 weeks (geez...) to send me a new one directly to my house.
Apart from the time it takes them to send me a brand new one, everything seems to go on rails. You can't have it all...

Well I guess thats good news, maybe? Good news is that you are getting a brand new 60GB free with no real hassle, but the bad news is you have to wait 4-5 weeks. OUCH.

Well that is good news then. Seems like Sony handled your situation very well. Maybe it will be like with my 360s, before I traded it in for a PS3, that I sent in and get back fasted than what they would tell me it would.

And Sony support didn't make you want to put a large, sharp, object through your skull? Maybe it's just the American end of it.

It will seem like an eternity waiting for the new one to arrive, I'll have to find myself another time-consuming hobby until then.

That would be sweet, getting it before their ETA.
But overall, I'm pleased with how things are going so far. Straightforward without too many questions or red tape. 👍

I was very surprised, actually. Because I'ev read so many (bad) things about Sony support that when the hot babe at the store told me I had to deal directly with them, I had a really bad feeling.
And most of all, things going smoothly here, of all places.
The country where usually you have to fill a form in triplicate and have a 30-day waiting time to buy a chewing gum. Go figure...

4-5 WEEKS! Dang. I'd hope they could turn something around like that just a wee bit quicker. Especially after they admit they've "got loads" on standby for just this kind of occurrence  Friggin' annoying, and for the most part I like Sony. Oh well. Once again, at least now you've got some good free time to really put the new 5.1 system through it's paces.

I just got prompted to download Firmware 2.17 exactly 3 mins ago, will post with what it contains.

Rockstar Working On New Max Payne For Xbox 360, PS3

March 12, 2008

Sources are stating that Rockstar is currently working on a new Max Payne for release in 2009 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. This would likely launch alongside with the launch of the movie, which stars Mark Walhberg.Washington (dbTechno) - Sources are stating that Rockstar is currently working on a new Max Payne for release in 2009 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. This would likely launch alongside with the launch of the movie, which stars Mark Walhberg.

Take-Two had a conference call to investors yesterday, stating that once Rockstar finishes up on GTA IV, they are moving on to release a sequel to another big franchise for release in 2009.

Many have been speculating what exactly this sequel could be, with ideas pointing towards a new Bully, Manhunt, or something else.

It appears that the new franchise entry they are talking about will be a new Max Payne game.

Max Payne gained a lot of attention as a franchise, releasing originally on the PC and then on the PS2 and Xbox.

The game is already being made into a huge Hollywood movie, starring Mark Wahlberg, which will also release in 2009.

It appears that Rockstar is getting a new entry into the Max Payne series ready to coincide with the release of the movie, even though it will likely have a different story.

:D

Apparently the update doesnt really contain anything major, its all pretty minor patches and fixes.
Including update notes.

I also have a question:
Has anyone else received anything from Sony regarding their Backstage Pass customer service program?

I get this membership card (my name on it and everything) in the mail and it tells me that at no cost I have been entered into their new special customer service program called Backstage Pass. I check out the Web site and it has a specific phone number and some of the deals are things like free shipping for repairs even after the warranty has expired on all Sony products.

Has anyone else gotten this?

If it is truly some special thing I am confused. I have a refurbished six year old Vaio I bought off of Ubid, have had or have all three Playstation consoles, and a PSP. That's it. The only thing I can figure is that I fill out those little registration cards that come with all their hardware and games. And I only do that because a few times a year they send me coupons for Sony stuff based on products I currently own.

I was just curious if this was some kind of cool deal or nothing special.

Oh, and does it officially make me a fanboy?

I haven't received anything. At lease not that my wife has shown me.

I can't answer the rest of your questions, but about the fanboy - that would be an unequivocal yes. :D

Oh, and does it officially make me a fanboy?

Along with this other evidence I found I'd have to say yes!!!

I really need to get back to work

I must be missing something. DivX playback has been supported since v2.10, yet the DivX files I've tried flid out and report "Unsupported Data"...

Are they files that worked before?

Never tried them until today.
I have seen a ton of complaints on ps3forums and the playstation blog about how full DivX/Xvid support meant a handful of codecs.

That could be your issue. It is kind of like their WMV support really just meant the VC-1 codec. It's a lot of fun transcoding WMVs into WMVs.

That's why I gave up and switched media servers to one that will transcode on the fly.

Having not used any proper DivX movies in years I have no clue what the quality difference would be between them and MP4 files, but it may be something you want to look at.

Meh. I'm not that fussed at the moment - I was just surprised to see DivX files not working on the DivX-enabled PS3.

What video format works best/easiest on the PS3?
