PS3 General Discussion

Yes the files are indeed compressed and encrypted. When I did the upgrade to my now 320GB HDD all my files were restored to their proper place and nothing was missing.

You have done this? I have heard different things all over.

My backup size was unusually small, but everything was restored on the new drive as far as I can tell. I thought it left my GT5:P videos behind, but they're still here.

As for the backup utility and copyright-protected video, D-N linked to the manual page a few pages back.

As for the backup utility and copyright-protected video, D-N linked to the manual page a few pages back.
And therein lies the problem. This is not 100% clear:
If you perform any of the following operations after backing up, copyright-protected video files in the backup data may not restore correctly.
- Format the hard disk
- Restore the PS3™ system
- Move copyright-protected video

- Download copyright-protected video
- Play copyright-protected video that has a time restriction for the first time
By switching drives I could have technically done any of the three things I bolded.

There is some DRM coding placed on your system to allow that video to play on that system, but is it still in place when the HDD is replaced? That is my question.

Honestly, if they just allowed the download list to work like the game store this wouldn't be an issue.

That's also why it says "may not", instead of "it will not".

If you perform any of the following operations after backing up, copyright-protected video files in the backup data may not restore correctly.

Like any smart company, it's a disclaimer to protect them against something they may not have any control over. They also have specific discalimers and instructions in the manual regarding removing and replacing your hard drive (page 16).

As mentioned several times, I've done this with my PS3 twice already, and about to do it again for the third time. I also did it for my folks' PS3 when I gave them my previous 160GB drive. As mentioned before, in each of those cases the backup utility restored all the previous content, which not only included copyright-protected video, but naturally to swap out the drive it also meant I had to format the new hard disk.

However, if you are truly concerned, I wouldn't ask for our advice. I'd check Sony's own Knowledge Center, and if you are really concerned, get it in writing.

At the end of the day though, I'm sure even if for one reason or another the content you downloaded from the video store is not restored, all it would take is a call to Sony and they'll be able to authorize you to download the content again at no cost. In fact, I recall last year Sony made an official statement that basically said just that, and thus you might be able to find it doing a search on the official playstation forums.

That's why I am asking, because the manual is not completely clear and so I am curious.

From the PSN video store?

Just to show I am not coming off paranoid, here is the article that has me wondering:

PSA: Think twice before deleting PSN video downloads
by Randy Nelson { Sep 22nd 2008 at 10:40PM }

The ability to download movies and TV shows via your game console definitely has its advantages. Like, for instance, never having to leave your couch. Of course, as so many modern conveniences are apt to, it's not without disadvantages. In the case of PS3's video store, one of them is the fact that, should you want to free up HDD space by deleting a video and then attempt to download it again later, you'll quickly find yourself on the phone with a Sony customer service representative. (Plus, you might actually have to get up to call them – ouch!)

Oh, the rep will happily flip a switch somewhere enabling you to re-download the video in question ... but only once. Make the same mistake twice and you're stuck. In this case, whether you actually "own" what you've paid for is more than a little fuzzy.

Of course, you could take advantage of one of the PS3's nicer features and simply install a larger off-the-shelf hard disk by yourself. And, since Sony's been so kind as to provide a PS3 Backup Utility for migrating your data, those videos will transfer right over ... right? Not so fast. According to the utility's documentation, purchased and rented PSN video store content may not play following the transfer process. In this case, you'd better hope you haven't used that one-off "lifeline" call to customer service yet.
I purchased those two movies before reading this article. I was aware that redownloading would require a call first (which I also think is an unnecessary hassle, but Hollywood hasn't been known for customer service) but I didn't know that they have a "may not" thing in their back up utility info.

So, as I approach a HDD switch I was just curious if anyone had personal experience with it.

Side note: Since buying those two movies I have decided the video store's somewhat strict rules will prevent me from purchasing again. I'll still rent but I am done with purchases. I also didn't feel it was worth it in comparison to a physical DVD or Blu-Ray either. I miss the special features.

But like I said, I can still just make a direct copy to my PSP so that I have them in some form. Then I can just stick the Memory Stick in the PS3 and play them (I think, must test this). Since they are SD I won't even lose quality.

I guess if it was me I wouldn't worry about it. Worse case scenario you have proof of purchase, and I'm sure all it would take to get your content back is a call to Sony's PSN customer support. Best case scenario, everything is restored properly on the new HDD. 👍

BTW: I discovered it is also possible to swap back and forth the old HDD and the new one... so I suppose if you really wanted to you could keep the old HDD and use it to play content that didn't copy over for one reason or another, and you don't want to call Sony to download it again.

Hmm, that is a possibility, although I was planning to get an external USB case for it and use it for extra storage.

I'm back online and faster than ever. Thank goodness I have a 320GB HDD. Looking forward to getting my ps3 online.

Nice ping speed too! 👍

Also, Audio Authority has released an IR to Bluetooth Signal Converter for the PS3 itself, and not the remote. It is called BlueBeam (Model C-1071). It allows you to control your PS3 without a PS3 remote or controller, but rather with a universal remote... which is handy for those that like only having one remote, and who use a PS3 for things other than games.

However, the cost (MSRP $160) seems very high to me considering there have been several less expensive alternatives to this already. Like the ones using a USB dongle with an IR receiver like Nyko's BluWave and the PS916 from Logic3. In fact, you can even use the PS2 remote, although it is limited to what you can control on the PS3.

Then there is the IR4PS3 which basically modifies the official PS3 remote with an IR to Bluetooth converter:

Pako, and anyone else interested in full control of your PS3 with Harmony, Pronto, and most IR universal remotes:

ir4ps3_full_function_ir_remote_photo01.jpg

First Full-Function Infrared Control for the Sony PS3

The IR4PS3 has been designed to work with as many standard universal remote controls as possible. By default it can accept codes from stock Sony DVD remotes, stock Sony DVD-R remotes, and stock Sony BD remotes. These three codesets integrate with standard Sony PS2 remote control codes to round out the feature set. Since some of the PS3’s new Blue-ray-related commands aren’t covered by standard Sony infrared functions, a little finagling had to occur – for instance on the “DVD” codeset the four Blu-ray color buttons have been mapped to the functions for “Disc1” through “Disc 4”. Regardless, the designer has tried to ensure that Logitech Harmony owners will be able to obtain full control over the 51 functions that the official Blu-ray remote offers using the Harmony database. And since the IR4PS3 can be user-configured via special command sequences to listen to all or only one of these codesets, if you already own a Sony DVD, DVD-R or standalone BD player you’ll be able to ensure that it doesn’t conflict with the IR4PS3.

For owners of Philips Pronto, Universal Remote Control Inc. and other computer programmable remotes capable of accepting infrared codes in Pronto hex format, I’ve personally created a configuration with every code to those three codesets. And, as a special bonus, there are also four additional self-contained custom codesets that don’t conflict with anything. So, theoretically, the IR4PS3 is capable of independent control of up to five PS3 consoles in a single room – all from one universal remote control.
The DIY kit came out last year, and there were some people who would do it for you if you mailed them your PS3 remote. I believe now you can just buy the modified remote.

Ideally though, the cost of Bluetooth will go down so that manufacturers of consumer electronics and universal remotes will be offering support for Bluetooth... then we can do away with having to have IR receivers & repeaters in our rooms and needing line of sight for them to work properly.

Does anybody know a good Bluetooth Headset to use with the PS3 that cost under US$100?

Like I said before, I plan to get one by the end of this year, and I'm wondering which one would be good for Online Gaming, as well as talking with friends.

Look out for the official PS3 Bluetooth headset... It might come bundled with some games such as Warhawk. In fact, I think it does come with Socom but I would check.

I have used a Samsung mobile phone headset with the PS3 but it seems a little unreliable (doesn't always connect). Now, I use the Playstation Eye (PS3) camera as the mic and some headphones to stop sound interference / feedback.

I'm contemplating dipping into the world of PSN games, but I don't really know with what to start.

Ideally I'm looking for a game which is just a diversion, with trophies to give a sense of progression but without a requirement to play online to win them. Generally I prefer racing games, which goes without saying, but also puzzlers and killing-to-death stuff. Sports games... nah.

Suggestions?

Racing wise I would suggest Wipeout HD, an amazing title for the price.

I'm also personally a big fan of both High Velocity Bowling (however all the trophies for that are on-line) and High Stakes on the Vegas Strip (but that depends on liking poker and it has no trophies).

I would also recommend Pixeljunk Monsters and Eden if you are after puizzle games, however the trophies for both are very challenging.

My single biggest recommendation would however have to go to Flower, it does have trophies (all off-line), but is not a 'game' in the truest sense of the word. Take a look at the thread dedicated to it....

....hope that helps a bit.

I was edging towards Flower and WipeoutHD - though some of Wipeout's content seems online. I was also thinking of GTI Club+

Echochrome has a demo, but you might need to skip patching: the last time I tried the demo, it patched itself to the unactivated full version. Noby Noby Boy (stretch BOY to make GIRL grow!) is a fun diversion like Flower, but it is also not a real game. Lumines Supernova is on the PS Store as well.

Definitely get Flower, although it won't take you more than 2-3 days to beat it. Neat experience though.

I have all three and wouold quite happily recommend all of them.

Echochrome is great but it has not been patched for trophies in Europe yet.

I've GTI Club+, PixelJunk Eden and WipEout HD as my only Playstation Network games. I would suggest you the three of them but specially PixelJunk Eden and WipEout HD since those 2 are more into quality for the money you pay. GTI Club+ is also fine.. but too short and you'll end only playing a few times online.

WipEout HD only have 2 online related trophies if I remember correctly. Both PixelJunk Eden and WipEout HD have very hard trophies, specially WipEout HD. But I fully suggest you to get those two games. Both include personalized soundtracks (Eden on a later point, as a bonus after an achivement). WipEout HD will give you a great online play, game at its finest and will give you many hours of playing. It's not one of those games that will make you be stuck because of its difficulty since you can play it on easy mode for example, but later have the option to increase the difficulty or do the trophies which are the really hard part of the game. PixelJunk Eden on its part doesn't have online but it has an amazing artistical work on it, if you have a Full HD monitor/TV I strongly suggest you to check this game, it's one of the best artistic experiences for 1080p when you switch the colors on the background while completing a level. It's music (by Baiyon, a japanese artist) and the fantastic color design on the game (the art concept also by him) are worth the whole value of the game in €, and apart from that you obtain a fanstatic platform with touchs of puzzle and life / art concepts. And more to come: the developers announced an Encore for this game, don't know what that expansion will include but for sure it'll be great (they did it with an Encore for one of they other great games: PixelJunk Monsters) time ago. Both games contains a big electronic music and great art design. I think there's a Demo for each one of them on the PSN.

Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong. Both games have gave me one of the best experiences I've had on Playstation 3 with a game. And of course, Scaff or Famine, if you wanna do a race with me online on WipEout HD, you're welcome !

Have you looked at PAIN? It has trophies, some of them requiring puzzle solving skills to achieve, if he could die, he surely would and short of tossing mimes and Dick's balls, involves no sports.

As stated there is an official one sold by Sony, which is good quality. It normally runs $5, but Amazon has $5 off right now.

I think it comes in the SOCOM and Endwar bundles. Warhawk comes with a Jabra BT125 headset in its bundle, which is the one I have and use with my cell phone.

I'm contemplating dipping into the world of PSN games, but I don't really know with what to start.

As anyone on my Friends list can attest to, I have way more PSN games than I should. I am currently working on putting some reviews of them online, but haven't gotten far yet. In the meantime feel free to ask as you look at stuff and I will let you know my thoughts.

So far I really have just avoided episodic games and anything that looks like something I can already get on my cell phone or a Flash site for half the price. There's a few others I haven't gotten either, but the above will be an almost guaranteed no buy.

Racing wise I would suggest Wipeout HD, an amazing title for the price.

I agree with everything here. If you like tower defense Monsters is great, and I also suggest Savage Moon if you are more in the mood for killing Starship Troopers (movie) style bugs Although honestly, it is harder than Monsters.

I was edging towards Flower and WipeoutHD - though some of Wipeout's content seems online. I was also thinking of GTI Club+
GTI Club+ is good arcadey fun. With such small cars it almost feels like a cart racer. Although it does have some online stuff (pass the bomb mode, or whatever it is called).

You forgot tossing clowns too. Oh, and you get to spank monkeys.

Pain is a love it or hate it title. At first glance it seems like a very small and boring demo for the Havok engine. But when you start trying for the leaderboards and unlocking the in-game trophies you realize it is an evil strategy puzzler. It only got worse when they added trophies.

Oh, and it has some high quality innuendo based humor.

Here's my personal video made testing out their new video recording, with You Tube upload feature, and checking out the new Christmas outfit they had. This was just a test run and is very short.

Oh, and they have:

Super Stardust HD
Penny Arcade 1 and 2
Echochrome
Lumines Live (great game)
Bejeweled 2

You can't go wrong with any of these games :)
I also agree with Super Stardust HD and Echochrome. I do not have Penny Arcade stuff, Lumines, or Bejeweled. See my earlier comments.

I will warn you, once you get used to buying PSN games and see the quality that can be had for $5-$15 (more for Wipeout HD) your bank statement will look like you have a subscription fee.

When I sort my games by system I have 43 titles under PS3.

EDIT:
Commando and Cuboid are also fun ones :)
I haven't tried Cuboid (falls under my Flash game rule), but which title are you calling Commando?

I can think of three that could refer to:

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 ( I didn't like it) (no trophies)
Bionic Commando Rearmed (Great classic gameplay, but I wasn't a fan of the original) (trophy patch coming...supposedly)
Crash Commando (I like it!!! 👍) (trophies, but half require online)

Honestly: Crash Commando sold me with their trailer:
minor language

Best......trailer......ever.

I got my 60GB version for less than 2 years now and I'm glad I got it. Here is why: I got it w/ $100 off in the deal, a free controller, plus free bluray movies. Not to mention that my 60GB version is capable of playing GT1 and GT2 games using real chip to emulate them, instead of using software like the other PS3 version. I got good deal overall :)

I'm not completely sold on Flower. It's entertaining, and I can let the kids play for a bit, but I guess I just don't "get it".

That it is. 👍

Just be careful of the power poles. Especially if you're playing at night in the dark with headphones on and the volume turned up a bit...

So since I've played through the credits, I imagine that I missed the magic then.
