PS3 General Discussion

You may have just heard about it, but as Appie said, it has been available for all EU/PAL PSN users (which includes AU) for nearly two months, and there was a discussion about it starting at post #11621 by FK.

Also, as FK pointed out, even NA users can do this as well by simply selecting a country among the EU/PAL ones (including AU), and it will create a gamertag... the only drag (for NA users) is that it also shows the flag icon for the country you chose... which means it will say your in a country that you are not.

That said, no harm in bringing it up again, as some may not be aware of it, as info in this mega thread can sometimes be hard to find even with a search.
. Sorry for pointing it out again then, i must of just been a bit behind on the news.:)

Has anyone had any experiences with PS3 and powercuts?

Today we had a brief powercut (one second off, then straight back on), and whilst my TV and router powered off, the PS3 stayed on! :D

I'm not complaining, but does anyone know why this happened?

Super_Spig

Maybe the PS3 uses / stores so much power that it can survive a second of electrical failure (briefly powered by the energy stored in the capacitors). This happened once with me, my computer managed to stay on as the power flicked off and on again. Its the same reason why a power light can stay lit on a device for a few seconds even after unplugging.

I never thought about that! :D

It just seemed strange to me that despite nearly everything else going off, my PS3 stayed on.

Thanks Robin!

I had completely the opposite experience the other night. Having worked my way through the saturday practise session at Imola, I finally had a setup that was working spectacularly well with the Super Aguri F1 car. Low downforce, suspension gripping just wonderfully, gearing set perfect, able to throw the car over the occasional kerb without upsetting its balance. Everything felt sweet. I manage to get third in the first qualifying stage, on a less-than-perfect lap, then easily made it into the final ten for the last stage. So there I am, three laps into the final session of qualifying, tyres all at perfect temps, and just turning into the Villeneuve chicane, clicking back one extra gear to momentarily "pinch" the rears and slide the car over the right hand kerb, and ZAP! Power flickers, lights dim and the PS3 goes off.

I felt like killing myself right there and then. Nothing else in the house switched off, just the DAMN PS3!!!! :banghead::banghead::banghead::mad::mad::mad:🤬🤬

Hey! Sony doesn't look so bats**t crazy with their 10-year cycle anymore.

I thought we had established that anyone quoting Michael Pachter immeidately gets ridiculed.

Of course, this is ironic as he was the first analyst to predict new consoles in 2010-2011.

So, we know that when Micahel Pachter predicts something it definitely won't come true, but what happens when he makes two conflicting predictions? I think the Earth is going to implode, or at a minimum, the Wedbush Morgan offices.

I'm having trouble turning on the browser security after having turned it off..does anyone know of a way to reset that? When i try to turn it back on, the "Trend Micro Security" link is just blacked out.

^In case anybody was wondering, Sony sends you a box (coffin) for you to ship it in.

Anybody play Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard? RENT IT. Funniest game I've played in a long time, maybe ever. The whole thing is really just a satire of video games, and it breaks the fourth wall throughout. Some of the loading screen game tips are priceless:

If you are having trouble interrogating enemies, that's because the game doesn't have an interrogation feature.

Tip: A small amount of money given, usually in response to high quality service.

With a loading screen this long, this level must be GREAT.

Unfortunately the gameplay doesn't live up to the concept, it's a 3rd-person cover-based shooter (like Uncharted) but with buggy graphics, mediocre gunplay, dumb (and too many!) enemies, framerate issues, and it even froze the PS3 after an hour (hence the rental suggestion...)
More funny game mechanics here.

I believe the Trend Micro service has ended its free trial period.

So, I had an idea over the weekend and I posted it in the comments of this morning's PlayStation Blog post. I'm copying it here, so let me knwo what you think.

With the demand for new PSN avatars, why not make it possible to choose a Trophy icon as an avatar? You win trophies, you get more avatars. I know I would love to have my Bladder of Steel, Gettin’ Hoff, or LBP Platinum trophies as an avatar. It would give game devs incentives to be creative and give trophies more value to gamers than just bragging rights. Just a thought.

Great idea FoolKiller, 👍 definitely something they should look at implementing. If people spend their time getting the trophies, they should be allowed to show them off as an avatar if they want to. I don't know how difficult it would be for Sony to implement this, but I can't imagine it being too hard. New avatars are certainly needed.

I have also gotten compliments in the Blog from other commenters. If multiple people request this on official Sony community sites then it might actually happen. The EU's blog shoudl be going up soon, so use any close to on topic story to suggest it in the comments and bring it up in the EU community forums.

That's a great idea. Seeing as trophy designs have to be authorized by Sony, they don't have to worry about people using inappropriate images.

OK, so the PSN will be getting what has to be a fairly humorous (gross) take on the color matching puzzle game genre, like Bejeweled.

Critter Crunch! PlayStation Network! Barf!
Posted by Kris Piotrowski // Creative Director, Capy
Hello, new best friends!

This is Kris. I’m the creative director at Capy, which means I’m by-far the coolest guy at the studio. And Capy is pretty cool, so that’s not just talk. Anyway, who is Capy, right? Well, Capy is an indie studio from the sometimes frozen, other times disgustingly humid Canadian wonderland known as Toronto.

So, um, check this trailer…but only if you’re down with technicolor barf!

(Using Viddler, and I can't find the video on You Tube yet)

Boing! That was me announcing Critter Crunch for PlayStation Network!

Everyone at Capy has been working super-hard creating this crazy little arcade-puzzler (and filling it with humongous doses of love) so we’re very excited to finally announce its existence. Critter Crunch is fueled by an original and award-winning “food chain” puzzle mechanic, which is all about feeding critters into each other until they burst. It’s exactly as cute as it is horrible and sad, just like nature itself!

The game features a bunch of single player modes like adventure & puzzle, as well as online and local multiplayer in versus & co-op flavors, with a plethora of fancy trophies to collect. It also has lots of really pretty 1080p art that should make your HDTV happy.

I hope you like it!

If you have any questions, fire away in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them…and check back for more PlayStation.Blog updates soon!

Just a heads-up, I was at WALMART today and they now are selling the Eye of Judgment with the PS Eye as well as the Buzz! Quiz TV w/4 Buzzers for just $20 each. 👍

Not long after Sony rubbished the PS3 redesign rumors, a few pics turn up showing a "Slim PS3" which is rumored to be in production. Should these pics be real, then perhaps the reason why Sony "doesn't have plans to redesign" the console is because they're already done with it.

Japanese gaming blog Game Column got these pics from an unnamed source, indicating that these might be leaked shots of a Slim PS3 in production. This supposed new 120GB model still has the disc drive on the same place, a matte fingerprint-proof finish, complete with what appears to be two USB ports.

Real or Rubbish? You decide.

Please follow

There seems to be something in between the top and bottom parts shown. The panel with the power on/eject button in front of the drive slot is missing. At first I thought it was just a replacement case for the current ps3 but the power, hdmi, etc. ports in the rear are rearranged, holes for venting are significantly reduced, and finally the front bottom appears to be for a card reader, moved from next to the drive bay.

Other odd thing was having a ps3 logo on the top and bottom of the console, which appears to be either embossed or illuminated as it is cut out in the top piece and resembles the ps2 font wise.

Guess we will see in 2 weeks?

The Wii's game library has never really been that strong.
Depends on who you are. My wife rents every My Sims game, declares it bad, then wants the next one. Now, think about how in 2007 more people bought My Sims than Bioshock.

I really think it is now just that the housewife market is getting saturated and the better games for traditional gamers are coming out on the PS3 right now. So, traditional gamers, without as much disposable income, have been waiting for whatever game makes them buy a PS3 and they are getting them in Japan now. You think it is nice now, wait until FFXIII comes out as an exclusive in Japan. They will have a PS3-splosion.

FWIW here is what IGN dug up on the same topic:

Confirmation of the PS3 Slim?
GameStop employee hints at Sony's next big move.
by Ryan Clements

May 15, 2009 - Rumors circulated the internet yesterday regarding a supposedly leaked set of photos of Sony's "PS3 Slim." Previous hardware choices on Sony's part, including the slimmer PS2 and the PSP-2000, would suggest that Sony would eventually create a slimmer version of its powerhouse hardware, but would it be so soon after the system's launch?

Today, we received word that a trustworthy US GameStop employee discussed the matter with a Sony merchandizing representative. When the leaked photos were brought up in private conversation, the merchandizing representative was immediately surprised that the photos were "released already," but then hastily dismissed the subject when the rep realized that it was regarding a rumor. Could this reaction indicate that the PS3 Slim is more real than we originally thought?

We certainly take this information with a grain of salt, but it at least enhances the possibility that a PS3 Slim will arrive sometime in the future.

I plan on getting a PS3 in the next couple of months, so could someone please answer some questions for me?

1) Are there any technical differences between the current 80 and 120 SKUs aside from hard drive size?

2) My house has wireless internet, so should the PS3 hook right up like a laptop, or are there complicated steps I need to take to connect it like with the PS2? If so, what all's involved?

3) I hear some games install partially on the HDD. Is this required? How much space, roughly on average and at most, does this take up? Can you fully install a game so as to not need the disc to play it?

4) Downloading the most recent firmware update includes all previous updates, right?

Gracias.

Yes. :P

I'm not aware of a 120Gb version. I'll assume you mean a 160 instead. That aside, according to the wiki they are the same, short of drive size, of course. If you're interested in Uncharted and PAIN, the bundle pack is a pretty good price. $390 for the 80Gb + $60 for Uncharted + $10 for PAIN = $460 or the 160Gb bundle with Uncharted and PAIN for $480. $20 for an additional 80Gb is a fine deal. Again, provided you want the two games in question.

If you have security set up, you'll need to get the MAC address off of the PS3 and add it to your allowed devices on your router. There might be a few other things to tweak here and there, but nothing the fine folks here can't get you through.

Some games, like GT5:P did install on the HD, but you'll still need the disk to play the game. If I remember correctly, the file for GT5:P was 5GB, but I might be completely wrong on that.

Any DLC you get, like Rock Band/Guitar Hero songs and the like, will go on the HD, as well.

Short of downloaded games like Flower, PAIN, etc., I don't think a full disc based game can be installed so as to not need the disc anymore.

4) Downloading the most recent firmware update includes all previous updates, right?
Correct.

De nada. :D

Awesome answers, thanks again! I'm not interested in those bundled games right now. If that's the only difference, I think I'll be fine with 80GB. There are considerably larger drives I could always get for about the same price difference.

My 80Gb has served me well for over a year now and with as easy as it is to swap drives, or even use an external drive, there's not much point in going with the 160. Like you said, the price difference can get you the 80Gb and a 500Gb drive.

Don't worry about wirelessly setting up the PS3, it's so unbelievably simple a chimp could do it, so I suppose it's lucky we're all +1 chimps then, isn't it?

I think you need your password for the router, that's it. The PS3 will scan for it, so you will need to know the routers name/model/make.
