PS3 General Discussion

So I posted a while back about a broken PS3 that I discovered had a bad power source, and another broken PS3 that had a bad bluray drive. Well I got to keep the bad power source PS3 and my friend bought the one with the bad bluray drive for $50 from my sister, last night I combined them to build one "frankenstation" as it were. So my friend get's a perfectly working PS3 for $50 and he's going to try and build a nice halloween case.

All Hail .

Did u "repaired" the PS3 yourself?

Yes, all by my lonesome. I feel like a pro at taking apart and rebuilding PS3s now. Only hang up was when the piece that holds the ribbon cable for the bluray drive to the mother board broke so I had to carefully remove the same piece from the parts PS3.

My PS3 turned itself off & i cant get it to turn back on & my game is still in it, I still have a 3yr warrenty on it, so i'm ok with getting a 120G for free, but how do i transfer my data if it did die?
Unless you have it backed up externally, you will most likely lose it all.

Good job, sir. I have contemplated purchasing broken PS3s from Ebay and doing something similar.

Lol, what did u buy then ?
I figured: "Hey, the PS3 runs Bluetooth." And "Hey, the PS3 plays music." What I didn't know until after buying the choice Bluetooth headphone adapter, is that the system won't actually play music over Bluetooth.

You should, or check craigslist. This was almost guaranteed to work since I knew exactly what was wrong with both of them (had them both apart at one point)

Isn't there an option to change your choice of sound outputs from the TV/receiver to the headset?

Edit: I can't seem to find it in the manual, though...

Perusing the US Playstation boards has told me that it only works as a headset for game chat and Skype and what have you. Not as an audio output. Which I find odd and annoying.

I just scored a blinder of a goal on FIFA '09, in the last minute of the game, snatching a victory and sealing the league title in the process... I had so many chances, I couldn't believe it was going to end 0-0, but in the dying seconds, I chipped a little ball into the box, only for it to be headed away... but my striker was waiting and volleyed it sweetly into the bottom corner of the net! Marvellous :D

Here's the whole league with just one game left to play - I was playing as Rangers on Semi-Pro difficulty... a bit easy, but I will play as a different team next, and probably on Pro difficulty too! Excellent result for the two Scottish teams... the three Dutch and three Portugese teams did well, but the Belgians and Scandanavian nations were pretty poor...

But here is the story:

Netflix: PS3 disc must remain in system until 2010 update; and other answers to your pressing questions
by Alexander Sliwinski { Oct 26th 2009 at 6:04PM }

Netflix was kind enough to answer a heap of nitpicky questions following the announcement that its steaming service would soon be available for PlayStation 3. Certainly, question marks hovered over the application "disc" and whether or not it would have to always be in the PS3 to use the Netflix streaming service. It turns out that Netflix won't have an integrated XMB solution just yet -- but it's coming.

Check out our interview with a Netflix representative for the full details:

Joystiq: Was the PS3 application developed internally by Netflix?

Netflix: Yes, with the help of the Sony team.

Can the Netflix application be installed to the PS3 hard dive from the disc? Or must the disc be inserted every time a user wants to access Netflix?

Yes, the Netflix disc has to be inserted every time to access the Netflix service.

Why a disc-based application and not streaming access through the PS3 browser?

Netflix members and PS3 owners have really wanted a way to instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system. The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let them do this.

Why not distribute the application via PSN download or firmware update, and then embed it into the XMB?

Again, the instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3. Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.

Is releasing the PS3 application on a disc required by an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft?

The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360. Our goal is to give members the opportunity to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix via the widest variety of Netflix ready devices. All of our partners are aware of our goal.

Is any new content being added to the Netlfix streaming catalog alongside this announcement?

We are constantly adding content to better serve our members, however we did not announce new content alongside the PS3 announcement.

Can users search the entire Netflix streaming library from the PS3? (On Xbox 360, browsing is currently limited to 100-movie categories.)

Similar to Xbox, subscribers can search lists of movies in categories such as New Releases, Drama, Action, Comedy, etc., and will have access to the entire library available to watch instantly.

Will special features typically found on DVD and Blu-ray discs (e.g., additional audio tracks, director commentary, etc.) be available through the PS3 application?

No.

Is there any difference between the content catalog available on PS3 versus Xbox 360?

No.

Does the PS3 application include any features that aren't in the Xbox 360 application?

No.

Are there more features being planned for a future update?

Again, late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.

Finally, what's the update on a Netflix application for Wii?

Certainly, the Wii represents a great opportunity given the size of its installed base, but we have nothing specific to say about it at this point. The Xbox partnership has been terrific for Netflix members, and we're equally excited to announce the partnership with PS3.
So if you don't have a 360 no one can use Netflix as an excuse (which seems to be my friends' main argument).

I'm disappointed (though not particularly surprised) that Microsoft didn't make it so Silver users could get in on it.
After this gets added to the XMB they probably will. It would be a bit stupid not to if they seriously though Netflix was a selling point.

I'm beginning to wonder if it is just my PS3 or if the web browser is just woefully rubbish for everyone... it can't even browse YouTube without turning the experience into a frustrating nightmare, or even play back a video without constantly pausing - even when the video has fully loaded and plays fine on another system. Also, it has a tendency to crash, stick or otherwise screw up far too often for my liking. It is almost too embarrassing to use the web browser in company... I appreciate that web browsing is not what the PS3 was designed for, but does it need to be this bad?

Browsing stuff that doesn't utilize a lot of plugins, like Flash is fine, but since 3.00 I agree that You Tube has become painful to use. I was trying to show a video to my wife last night and the You Tube XL, designed for TVs, couldn't play the video I was trying to show her and the "standard version" kept restarting the video and acting like it hadn't loaded anything.

Pandora works like a charm, a big, free, unlimited supply of streaming music I want playing over my home stereo, charm.

To be fair, it is pretty much just YouTube that I am talking about. But given that it is one of only a handful of things I want to surf on my PS3 as opposed to my laptop, I think it is quite important. Sadly, we no longer get Pandora here in the UK... we used to, but it is now only available in the US. :indiff:

agreed on both points, youtube is far more disappointing than it used to be but I use Pandora all the time and rarely ever experience any skipping or lag

OK, now I am getting annoyed... for some odd reason, Google doesn't work properly when I have Javascript turned On - the "Search" button doesn't work, and I am effectively unable to use Google properly. (If I enter something into the dialogue box, I can only click on "Images", at which point the dialogue box is emptied and I have to retype my search. After this, I can click "Web" and get the search I wanted to do originally, albeit with a hassle factor of 3.2 million)

OK, so turn Javascript "Off", and it is back to normal... great, but now YouTube doesn't work. So, I can only use Google or YouTube properly, but not both??

Question time :

Last night while setting up a car.I needed a little insight on a setting. So I go to the internet on my PS3 and try to go to the tuning section to look this up.I made it to the homepage here at GTPlanet,a pop-up came on and asked if "I want to run the plug in" , I answered yes.I was then able to proceed to the prologue section for the tuning garages. Then my PS3 froze up.I had to manually shut it off and restart again.I logged back in,doing everything the same.I got the same result,it froze while trying to get into GTPlanet.I try it a 3rd time, this time I answered "no" to the plug in.I got so far,it froze up again.I finally gave up on trying to get into GTPlanet and went upstairs and used my main computer.I now keep my laptop handy downstairs with me just in case this happens any more.:nervous:

My question is this. Does GTPlanet run some sort of blocker or anything of the sort that will not recognize a PS3 signal and let me in ? That may sound stupid, but thats all I can think of.

I can surf the web all night long,go to my e-mail box and send messages, just about do anything on my PS3 and not have a problem. It's just when I try to get into GTPlanet,my system freezes up. :irked:

Help,please.

Same thing happens to me with my PS3. Then sometimes i don't have any problems logging on at all. Just don't understand what's going on!! Glad it wasn't just me!

It may be one of those pop up ads that occasionally happens. Those slow down my work computer, so I can imagine it freezing the PS3.

Being a premo member a way to tell is if you are logged in first or not.

Another thing it could be is that Imageshack add (or a picture hosted from there) on has occasionally bogged my PC down as well.

So sooner or later I will buy PS3 SLIM. My old Fat one is going to main living room as a Blu-Ray player, as well Netflix use.

SO will I be able to use two PS3s with same main account ? Will it work? as well at the same time?

Both cannot be logged in to the same account at the same time.

But you can have multiple accounts on one system, so put a new and old account on your new Slim and only log in to the old account when you want to download your old purchases from the PSN, or whichever way works best

You can have the same account on both PS3's and your DLC can be downloaded on upto 5 PS3's at one time. You cannot be logged into the PSN at the same time though as mentioned by FoolKiller. If you have your PS3 setup for auto login make sure you disable it before turning on the second PS3 or you will get logged off the PSN, bad when playing online!

Thanks guys! Now I know how to set it up! Should I buy the 250 gig slim one, or wait for GT5 PS3 bundle ( only if that PS3 has special paint job)?

Problem guys. My PS3 takes forever to read GTA4 and some other games such as COD4 freeze periodically. It stopped recognizing DVDs all together.

It's the 80 gig PS3 with no backwards compatibility. Should I try cleaning the disk reader, or should I call Sony and be like "WTF"?

Looks like a Facebook app is coming to the PS3 soon:

Gamespy

It looks like Sony is playing catch-up as news comes in today that the insanely popular social networking service Facebook is going to be arriving on the PlayStation 3. Eurogamer managed to squeeze an official comment out of Sony UK PR who say that an announcement is coming "very shortly." This comes on the back of yesterday's alleged leaked images of the service showing up on the PlayStation 3's XrossMediaBar seen here.

"The images of the service that appeared on the PlayStation website - caught by Scrawl before removal - were posted by mistake, we're told.

The official Sony UK PR line is that there will be more information on this 'very shortly'."

Sony recently revealed that PlayStation 3 users are now able to use Netflix services on their consoles. The Xbox 360 still has Last.fm and Twitter coming along with Facebook later this year.

I don't use Facebook, so I have no reason to know, but does it not work in the browser? Or is it limited functionality?

Anyway, Netflix has been the most useful non-gaming addition to date in my opinion.

You can, but I've heard people have had problems with it as of late.

I really hope that they don't force you to add it to the XMB.
