PS3 General Discussion

I had this issue whenever I had a server that was setup to transcode on the fly, but that was because my PC is old. Even if the file type was fine having Nero setup to transcode caused lag as it checked it as it went. I was also able to have it reduce lag by having it pre-cache all shared media whenever my PC started up, so that it was all set to go.

But as fun as sharing media via a server is, and still works great for a quick transfer or to show something in an instant to guests, most stuff like movies I just moved to an external USB HDD. I found that it was just easier to have a small HDD sitting plugged into the PS3 that could be accessed at any time.

EDIT: Was anyone else using your network? I found I always had issues whenever my wife was on MySpace or Facebook. Also, if it is wireless, make sure no one outside the network is accessing it.

I probably should get a external HDD for the PS3, I only have about 500GB of media so getting something shouldn't be that difficult. It would free up one of my drives in the computer too. I might have to invest in one of those 1TB drives or something.

And no one else was on the network, I was the only one home at the time. I have our wireless network protected too so I doubt there's anyone else on it.

Sorry I couldn't be much more help. I haven't messed with it much since switching out my internal HDD for a 320GB and hooking up an external 500GB. At that point I also went back and reconverted all my DVDs that were in MP4 to DivX with surround sound.

my ps3 wont even work now. the picture and sound wont even come up. this sucks. i d/l the new update and after that played around a little, i turned it off and haven't played since thursday, try to play it today and it wont even work...

If you hold the power button down until it beeps three times when turning it on it should start up a system menu and you can try the system restore option. That should fix it if the issue is software-related.

If that doesn't work then you likely have a hardware issue.

I have some videos in .avi format on DVD, but my PS3 doesn't recognise it.
What would be the best way to convert them so the PS3 can play it with minimal loss of quality (as it's not the best quality already)?

EDIT/ Ok I just checked, PS3 can play AVI format, so I don't know if it's the capital letters or if I made something wrong while burning the DVD?
On my PC it (of course) works just fine.

Not all avi files are created equally. avi is just a container for audio and video and it can use different codecs, so some avi files will work, and some won't.

I tend to convert to DivX for best quality, it even maintains the surround sound if you need it and has some good customization options to choose between quality or file size/conversion time.

Dr. DivX is an official, and free program you can get.

Ewww, seems I'm having a problem with my PC... it's freezing up on finishing DVDs, CDs still seem to work tho. I have put some of the files (which are now mp4s) on an usb stick and PS3 can read it! Looks amazing btw, I guess it's upscaling them, cause on my PC it looks rather horrible.
Well here's to reinstall Vista for the n- time... *knocks on wood*

Ok after only two attempts I managed to restore factory settings on my PC ... don't get me wrong I actually like (love) Vista, but... why the hell do windows PCs always get slower and slower over time no matter what! :grumpy:

I however don't get the video files to work on PS3 , I know it's stupid question, but what is necessary to make PS3 recognise burnt DVDs? Can't be so hard...
My PS3 reads the MPEG-4 files from usb stick, but I can't do playlists and DVDs with exactly the same data just don't show up. ( I did close the session on PC, but not helping )
Well as I said, it can't be too hard? :embarrassed:

I don't know. It works fine on mine.

Did you record the DVD as a data disc?

Yes I tried that, too. I just checked some vids are MPEG-4 / AAC and some are AVC / AAC, maybe that's why, I don't know ...
I wouldn't really want to convert them as they are very timing sensitive ( they are Vocaloid = japanese dance vids from my gf and she wants to practice in front of a bigger TV lol ) but I might try convert to Divx(?) ... I thought video on DVD is like burning audio CDs but appearently not.

Depends on your burning software, and if it recognizes the file types.

If you were trying to create a video DVD then you shouldn't have the files on the disc in anything but VOB files when it finishes.

If the burner is creating a video DVD, but putting the files in MP4 or AVC formats that might be why the PS3 can't read it. It is looking for one thing and finding another.

What error does the PS3 give you?

EDIT: If they read from a USB memory stick, why not just copy them from there to the PS3 hard drive?

Ah I see, I need VOB files, that's the problem I guess... I will have to rename all the files cause they are all in japanese and none of my burning software can handle them... so I did what I do with music, just drag n drop on the DVD icon.

I could just copy the files as they are from usb, but then there's no playlist, very confusing
So I try to rename them before burning and see if that helps.

PS: not so important now but the error code with the MPEG-4 files is " unsupported data" and the avi files just don't get recognise, so it says " no data " .
What's confusing is why my PC can play both from DVD with and without playlists, but PS3 only from usb memory stick ... well I'll get it somehow. :)

My PS3 died again. I try the heatgun fix that worked a few weeks ago, but not so lucky this time. In the trash it goes. :(

Hahahaha, no worries, Macs are no different.
As to your avi problem, I watch clips and videos from many sources and 95% of them work for me.

There are plenty of people willing to buy it off you.

Put them all in a folder on the PS3. If you need them to play in a specific order then place a number at the beginning of the title, like "01 Title" "02 Title" and so on and sort by name. Its convoluted, but it would be much easier than what you have had to go through so far.

Ahaha... that would've been a good idea, I didn't think of that however.
I finally got it with a program called Roxio, it didn't have problems with the japanese letters and it worked. Before that I tried with Windows DVD maker and it seemed to work too, but ended up with another empty (!) DVD...

Just out of curiosity anyone know why the (working) DVD finally ended up with just over 3GB when the original files were only about 400MB and can I reformat the DVDs wasted in the process of trial and error so I can use them again?

Roxio is pretty good. That's what came with my PC but I then switched to the copy of Nero that came with my newer DVD burner, mainly because it also had media server software too.

Sounds like it converted your files to a true video DVD (VOB files), in the same format DVD movies are in, which is what it sounds like your earlier thing was trying to do but getting confused along the way. On a video DVD about two hours of video will take up around 4.5GB. It's the same as burning an audio CD from MP3s, or whatever, where you only get 80 minutes on a 700MB disc, even though as an MP3 disc you will get closer to 10 hours.

Unless the DVDs wasted in the process were DVD-RW (it will say on the disc or the case they came in) you cannot reformat them. They are literally burned by the laser. However, they do make great drink coasters

Hi!

I have a question and I guess this would be the best place to put it: Is their any indication (logo, sign, whatever) that can male possible to identify a backwards compatible PS3 to PS2 games?

I have a 80GB fat model and I'd like to have confirmation if it is or not able to read PS2 games.

Thanks

The 80GB is backwards compatible but apparently, the compatibility isn't as great as the launch model.

What do you mean? Some games may not be readable? I was thinking of getting my self a new copy of GT4. Are there any issues related to it?

Thanks in advance!

Im pretty sure 80GB fat consoles are not backwards compatible, mine isn't. If you still have the box it should say something on the back like my one.(Under IMPORTANT), if not then you could always try a PS2 disc.👍

the earliest 80 gigs have software BC, My friend has one and he has yet to find a game with problems but he doesn't use the feature very often.

Thanks I didn't know that:tup:. Mine must be one of the later models then, I bought it new a few months before the slim was released.

I am pretty sure Australia (Australia is pretty much Euro in relation to PS3 stuff) didnt get the early 80gigs, we did get the backwards compatible 60gigs though. I have an older 80gig and we all know that they dont have BC.

Good Lord the PS3 Netflix interface sucks, especially when compared with how it is on the 360. Why couldn't they just make it simple and allow me to browse the movies on the PS3 and then just play them? No I have to add movies to my instant queue on my computer then I can watch them.

Oh and I'm seriously trying to figure out why downloading a 300MB update for the MLB game takes 20 freakin minutes. Everything else on my network is running faster then that and I even have the PS3 connected via ethernet instead of wirelessly.
