PS3 General Discussion

Wirelessly? LOL

(Instead of being wireless) ;)

That would most likely be because the server from which you are downloading the update from, has a cap limit on it. Which would have nothing to do with your PS3 or internet connection.

And as far as Netflix goes, I would much rather have to put up with that, as opposed to going the 360 route, which requires an internet connection, Netflix subscription, and Xbox Live Gold membership....ouch.....

Argh I can't get my damn console out of NAT Type 3. I've given it a static IP and forwarded all the correct ports. I've tried it with and without uPnP enabled and it's still stuck at Type 3. It never used to be Type 3 until about a week ago when it suddenly changed. This completely sucks as it isn't possible to play online GTA4, Dirt 2 or Skate with a NAT Type 3.

Anyone have any suggestions besides putting it into the DMZ?

Everything I download on the PS3 is way slower then anything on download on my 360, PC or laptop. I don't understand it and I know it's not my router or internet connection. Makes no sense. Even the game update installs take forever on the PS3. I'm getting fairly annoyed because all I want to do is play the MLB game.

And I have a Gold membership anyway and I don't buy it just to watch movies so it's not really an issue. I'm just annoyed that when Kari and I sat down to watch a movie on the PS3 the other night I had to get my laptop so we could browse movies and find one that was available for instant watch. It didn't dawn on my the 360 did the same thing till last night...it's so much better and a lot less clunky to use.

Roxio is pretty good. That's what came with my PC but I then switched to the copy of Nero that came with my newer DVD burner, mainly because it also had media server software too.

Sounds like it converted your files to a true video DVD (VOB files), in the same format DVD movies are in, which is what it sounds like your earlier thing was trying to do but getting confused along the way. On a video DVD about two hours of video will take up around 4.5GB. It's the same as burning an audio CD from MP3s, or whatever, where you only get 80 minutes on a 700MB disc, even though as an MP3 disc you will get closer to 10 hours.

Unless the DVDs wasted in the process were DVD-RW (it will say on the disc or the case they came in) you cannot reformat them. They are literally burned by the laser. However, they do make great drink coasters

Yup, I got a bit confused there actually, my PC didn't really help either, since it kept freezing. Makes all a bit more sense now tho. 👍

I have used both fairly often and neither is significantly better than the other from what I can tell. Each has its positives and negatives. The 360's browsing options are limited to about 100 or so of the most recently added items. If you added every single thing available to you via the 360's interface you couldn't fill the Instant Queue. This isn't an issue if you don't have anything specific in mind to watch, but if you want to do something like add all the MST3K or Red Dwarf stuff available you may only find 2-3 in the 360 interface. To add them all you have to go to the Website.

That said, the software on the 360 seems to load faster from the dashboard and is more convenient until the PS3 has it added to the XMB.

On the PS3 side the interface seems to operate more smoothly as it is using what appears to be a BD Live app. Once it is running it runs and connects faster than the one on my 360, likely because it isn't having to run through Xbox Live first, or is somehow tied to the dashboard interface. Similarly, anytime my connection drops to two bars or less on my 360 the 360 just gets stuck giving me a message that my connection is slow and if I continue I will have lag issues. But it never plays. On my PS3, even with one bar, it will always just start playing. If my connection is slow I can pause my PS3 and buffer the video, just like the PC interface. I don't know if the 360 buffers or not because it never gets that far.

And if I want to add or remove movies to my queue on the PS3 I have never had to pull out the laptop because my PS3 has a browser. It can't do the animated menus on Netflix's site, but it can use the search feature.

I primarily use the 360's app just because I don't have to leave my chair, but I switch to the PS3 if my Internet is acting up.. Once it is an XMB app on the PS3 I will see if there are any changes.

And honestly, personally having used Netflix streaming regularly before either console had it, your issue hasn't been one for a long time for me since I have over 200 items in my queue right now and have been watching a lot of TV shows that I don't feel warrant a DVD purchase, like Farscape. And because both interfaces are severely limited to the point that I don't find either of them functional for more than just pushing play I tend to once every week or two spend a break at work sifting through Netflix's site and adding stuff. Clicking "view all" on one genre will bring up multiple pages, each page having nearly as many choices as the whole of the 360's interface.

If you intend to use it regularly you are better off taking some time on a PC to setup your queue in advance and finding all kinds of hidden gems on the site. At that point, assuming you have a steady and strong Internet connection, there is barely a difference between the two.

You also have to put in a disc every time you want to use the PS3's Netflix streaming too which I find fairly pointless. Why not just allow me to load something on to the PS3 and go from there? And yes I know I can use the web browser but trying to type on that mini keyboard while laying on my couch is annoying. When I'm in movie mode I'm extremely lazy.

I'm not watching a ton of instant stuff, mainly when Kari's over and we feel the need to watch a movie. So it's not that inconvenient but it just seems like it was a big after thought on the PS3 whereas on the 360 they worked to integrate it correctly. I feel like a lot of features on the PS3 are rather half-assed like that and it's kind of disappointing.

Oh well I got MLB the Show 10 working last night so at least the PS3 has redeemed itself with an awesome baseball game. I foresee a lot of play time with that over the next few weeks and when I get bored of that I can always switch over to NHL 2K10. Sports games just play so much easier with the PS3's controller then the 360's controller for some reason. I just need to get the World Cup game now and I'll be in sports gaming heaven!

Netflix has a contract with Microsoft that the disc somehow gets around. Same situation for the Wii. When the contract runs out this fall the PS3's XMB will be updated with a built-in app. When the PS3's discs were first announced they said to expect an XMB app in late 2010.

I'm not sure if it is a console exclusivity thing or a deal related to Netflix using Microsoft's Silverlight Player for their streaming, but the situation is supposedly going to be resolved by the end of this year and Netflix is looking to get streaming on any device they can.

Whatever your issue is with Netflix on the PS3 though, it isn't a Sony issue.

Mini keyboard? You mean an on-screen thing or do you have the overpriced keypad? The on-screen keyboard can be made QWERTY and I have a wireless keyboard/mouse setup for when I don't feel like using that. Not sure what your mini keyboard thing is but it isn't something I deal with.

That's good that it's going to be resolved but I can't help but thing Sony didn't want to make it easy on Netflix users because they want you to stream movies off the PS Store. I refuse to do that though because rentals are what $5.99 for a standard definition movie? That's ridiculous, Family Video down on the corner charges me $2 for a movie rental and then there is the library which is sorta free.

Ya I have that little over priced thing since I don't have a wireless keyboard and my PC's keyboard is massive. It's that epic Logitech one with the colour LCD monitor on it. The keypad doesn't work too well as my thumbs are too big. I thought it would be a good investment for things like Home but it wasn't.

The situation is actually getting reversed in regard to streaming availability. Most services that allow digital delivery now have gotten contracts that don't allow rentals of new releases for a month. They get a much larger selection, but rentals are delayed. Netflix has this too for a number of studios, but that deal does allow for things like Moon to already be Instant streaming. Similarly the PS Store will have purchases for a while before the rental is available.

$2.99-$3.99 SD, $4.99-$5.99 HD. And a very broken DRM system.

I have Netflix, and my in-laws lend us all their Blockbuster rentals so we can watch them and take them back ourselves. I have Avatar on Blu-Ray sitting at home right now.

Honestly, the PSN video store is just plain stupid. I have only ever used it to rent a movie to put on my PSP when on a trip or staying in the hospital. Oh and that free episode of Dexter they offered once that got my wife and I both hooked on the show.

I gave the keypad serious thought, but then I caught a Logitech USB wireless keyboard and mouse combo on sale for $19.99 at Radio Shack. I just keep it hidden under my entertainment center or sofa. My only issue is that the keyboard burns through batteries. That wouldn't be a problem except it uses AAA, which I don't have in rechargeable. Had it used AA I could just use the batteries I have for my Wii.

Make sure upnp is enabled within your router settings.

(not just the PS3 settings)

Presuming this was aimed at my question, I've tried that, both enabled and disabled and all combos possible of PS3/Router Enabled/Disabled stuff. It still won't change.

EDIT : All is sorted now, all I did was disable and re-enable the uPnP once more and it decided to work.

Bought a $20 card to get the MW2 Stimulus Package and have $5 left. Are there any good PSN games for $5 or should I wait till I get another card to purchase something else?

I don't know what you own already. Some of the older PSN titles were in the $5 range and now most of the Minis are under $5. Also check the Spring Fever sales and the weekly discount stuff as some things drop below $5 every now and then.

And in case anyone has missed it: The PlayStation Store now updates on Tuesdays, beginning last night.

Flower is worth a punt, not sure how much it is on the US store but it's dirt cheap in the UK. Just sign out of PSN so your mates don't know you're playing it ;)

Why would you hide that fact? It isn't like it is Hello Kitty's Happy Fun Time. It is quite possibly the argument for showing that games can bridge the gap between interactive entertainment and art.

Flower's good but Peggle's better ;)

I wouldn't and don't, just a bit of humour ;)

It is a very good showcase to gaming critics that it's not all about shooting people in the face and I find that non-gamers really enjoy it. One slight criticism would be the trophy list, it looks like it would be hard work to get them all which is against the ethos of the game.

EDIT: Indeed, I've got Peggle on my iPod and PC...think it might be overkill getting it on the PS3 too though :)

I got them all 100% within a week of getting the game. They aren't that hard.

I reinstalled a newer version of PS3 Media Server and it fixed the stuttering issues which is good since I have a lot of new stuff I want to watch.

I guess there were some new protocols put in place at some point?

Anyone else having trouble adding funds to their PSN?

I can download demos and stuff I've bought before, but I get an error every time I try to add funds.

According to the @PlayStation Twitter feed they have found an issue with the EU store and are working on it.

And was pretty much just addressed in this EU blog post comment reply:

Hi all,

We are aware of the issue regarding topping up wallets on PlayStation Network. We can assure you that we are doing everything we can to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

They gave us that stupid What's New thing and the news feed scroll bar. You would think they could make a small note somewhere in that stuff.

Thanks, FK.

Seems like I'll need to delay my purchase of Sneezies. (Yes, I know...)

Maybe you could shed some light on this, if you have the same issues as me. Streaming movies from my PC to the PS3 means internet speeds are at a crawl, wireless or wired. This is with ps3mediaserver as well as tversity. I asked on their forums and they said something is wrong. However I've dragged my ps3 to a dozen or so different houses and the problem exists in all of them.

I did too most of yesterday evening. Although it did start working much latter on. I've now got a dozen plus copies of the MW2 Stimulus Pack waiting to download that i can't seem to delete from the list :ouch:

I have a dozen copies of the Stimulus Package in my download list too, but I think that's because they put up a download for each particular MW2 disc ID.

I keep getting signed out of psn with the error code:

80028ed6

This only happens when I turn on MW2, the second I close MW2 I can sign back in, I dont want to re download the latest patch because it is 318mb, does anyone have a solution?

My understanding from google is that it is caused by either:

1) A problem with PSN, thus many people will be getting it, so just weather the storm out.

2) Your firewall settings need changing. In which case....

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

Given it only happens with MW2, it's most likely a PSN issue with the patch and for some reason it can't connect (server overload most likely) to the MW2 hosted servers.

I am not sure what the problem was but I just persisted, kept signing back in after being signed out and it is working now :/
