PS3 General Discussion

I read an article from the guys who made warhawk about implementing the sensor feature and he said the pad still had rumble.

To be honest the confrence was a bit of a let down, some stuff stood out beyond what I hoped, and other just looked naff.

Tekken 6 looked awfull, but i guess it has a long way to go, Fall of man was great. GT-HD was rubbish yeh it was running at a super high frame rate and at 60FPS but there was only 4 cars on track and when they were at Grand Canyon, there was no smoke or dust, plus the sound was still naff. The most imppresive stuff was the Tiger Woods animation, that was so strange, it looked so real words cant discribe it, and Hot Shots looke awsome, plus the car demo that was shown at GDC was given its full unvailing and its looking like a really good game.

All in all some highlights but not enough to mke me excited, infact I was more excited when I didnt know what was going to be shown, but now its taken the sting out of it.

It's still too early to know what the UK price will be. I'm hoping it'll be fairly close to exchange rates but I'm not keeping my hopes high.

My only real problem is the lower spec of the 20GB PS3. Really it should be more than $100 less with the HDMI, wifi and flash memory taken out. On the plus side it suggests the $599 version is better value. But I don't see the point of the $499 PS3. It's not 'true' HD as Sony would like us to believe as it does not produce a digital signal. And I wonder, can component send 1080p? Maybe those without HDMI tv's won't care. But I do as I have a HDMI tv and I'd have gone for the cheaper version if it had HDMI. I don't like being forced to pay more. It's manipulative and cynical.

However if the 60GB is sold for between £410 and £450 I will get one asap. But £500+, no. It will have to wait. It's still going to sell and I personally found many of the games seemed very good indeed (they look better when downloaded and viewed in higher quality). So I'm happy with that. The PS3 is no slouch and easily the equal of the 360. I could even learn to live without the rumble.
And though I understand the price, when considered, isn't too bad for a true HD console with 1080p capabilities (well, as long as it's the 60GB version) I also understand why the price has made people unhappy. I was hoping for £350 - £400. Well, I'll wait and see what Sony Europe have to say about the price.
I will get a PS3, but at the moment I can't say when.

while i had a lot of joy watching some things, like the F1 game which is gorgeous, i think i can put a list of things that let me down:

1- ridiculous price. altough some day i will buy one, i think it can hurt sony badly.

2- two versions with one of them missing features... hmm, just like the tard pack of the 360...

3- GT5 will take forever to develop... since it was the first game of the conference, i was expecting them to show the real engine of GT5, because GT games are always over the top in terms of graphics... guess we will have to wait until TGS to see the real GT5...

4- why change the controller, why??? i used to love playing GT2 with the old heavy DS, because it really had a rumble feature and i could feel the car... them they reduced the rumble in the DS2, but it still had it... now they took it off?
people will be irate at sony and they will have to implement a rumble of some kind... i don´t care about motion, if i want to move i´ll play with that old genesis activator cr@p...
i mean, you can control the plane by lifting and moving the controller... why would i want that? i always made jokes about those that use to move the controller to play... now they will be happy... at least i hope we can set up the controls so we can have a standard way of playing... like they advertise for the wii, "you can flip the controller to turn the car" i mean, wtf? who cares about that if you can play racing games with a WHEEL:dopey:

well sorry about that, i was just to mad with the controller thing... taking rumble because of a stupid motion thing... i know i probably have to play it first, but i don´t see this as an advantage:grumpy:

all in all it was very good, 8 out of 10 in my opinion. but those points that i made before really take some of the glory...

well, that´s one of the problems i was thinking last night... videogames are becoming more and more a hardcore thing... its going too far sometimes... its complex, expensive and that might not translate well to the average gamer... that must be nintendo´s thinking, since they will release a videogame for kids and for casual gamers...

i don´t have a problem with hardcore stuff, i love the development of next gen videogames... i just wonder if this will equal to sucess in the business side... i´m waiting for some in depth analisys of that... still haven´t founf anything substancial on the web about this subject...

Sackbladder Im with you all the way, but The cheaper one only has three features missing and a lower size HDD.

No HDMI - Well unless you want you PS3 for a Blue-Ray movie player you wont see many problems, just lower res, and seeing as allot of people still have yet to get a HDTV over here in the UK (including me) this isnt a majour issue.

No Wireless - Again this isnt a big problem, as many people have no need for the use of a wirless contoller, but hooking your PSP can be done Via the USB too, so no probs there either.

No card reader - Well you can always get a USB one and use that instead so no probs there either.

Smaller HDD - Is this such a big problem? I dont think so, If like me you wont be doing much downloading of content only the occasional track or car for GT5, then a 20gb HDD will last a good while, but if you manage to fill it, then you can always buy a bigger one, seeing as they are interchangable.

So the pirce isnt too bad, infact the £500 for the 60gb version is not bad seeing as a BD player is £500 and with the ps3 you are getting a console too, its not that bad, If it turns out to be £600 then this is a bit steep, but Eveyone knew it was going to cost, even at the begining of this saga, Ken said it was going to be expensive.

It reminds me of dating.
You go out with a great looking girl, watch a film, have a meal, have a great time. Then you realise the nights cost you £200! And you STILL only get a peck on the cheek.
Well, with the PS3 it's going to be the same. It looks great, does great things but boy, you have to pay for it. I guess I was expecting that kind of price. Some things you just have to pay for..

I still don't know when I'll be getting one though. Need to sort out my finances.

Well, you can start saving money by not going out on dates. Three dates, and you're there, buddy.

Lol...oh I don't go out on dates anymore. Well, cheap ones where the meal comes to £20. No wonder I'm still single!

Just a ppint, it's missing Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth, the controller's and many wireless devices that use Bluetooth will still be able to connect with it.

good point didnt think of that ;) well looks like all the HD vids or poping up on Gametrailers now. and to be honest they are looking great, I only saw the low quality version of the confrence over at gamespot, but these vids definatly do the games better justice.

"What's the matter with your fish 'n chips, love?"
Fish and chips? They'd be lucky. Sausage and chips more like. Maybe just the chips. Maybe just the sausage....

Anyway, I'm coming round to the price point. It's such a shame though that the 20GB was'nt more attractive but I want HDMI (it can't be that expensive. I Have a Samsung DVD player with HDMI and it only cost £115!). So the 60GB for me.

I'm getting a nice expensive projector soon, so I'll definitely be going to the top package PS3, I just don't know if I'll be going for it at launch, or a few months after.

You're not understanding, the sensor doesn't work as simple as you think it does.

It's 6 precise degrees of motion sensors. Not just "hey let's move this way".

Rumble features could disrupte the precise input needed for a game to function properly, hence, it was removed, since it was not viewed as the most valuable asset. If you want to argue, that's fine, but I have insider information, and according to spokesmen, the rumble was taken out because it was not an option sony saught to endorse, especially with extended cost and R&D. It would have been pointless for them to include it, as it would ruin their Motion technology.

True.

Anyone have played Time Crisis?
When you handle the gun, it's hard for the arms.
You play for 1 hour & it start to be heavy. Staying in place is not uber.

They should stick with their DS2. It's the best controller ever created for gaming.

tha_con: I'm simply stating what I belive after what I have seen of the games thus far, and they most certainly arent this huge leap in which all PS Fans including yourself have been preeching for the past year. Sure, some of them look a touch better than the 360, but to get the full effect you are going to have to spend the extra $200 on the 93-octane PS3.

IMO: Not worth it... For $200 that gets me nearly half way to a brand new 30" HDTV with 1080i, or buys me four games for the 360, or hell, it may even buy me a brand new Wii...

As of right now, Wii (IMO) is going to be the big thing at E3. I know that I have torn the thing apart in the past, but I'm liking the idea now that I have indeed seen it in action. Who cares about flashy graphics and gut-shaking sound if you cant play games for what they are, GAMES? Its going to change the industry, and I think Sony's use of motion sensor on the PS3 only confirms it...

We have about an hour and a half till the Microsoft press conference, I'll make some better judgements afterwards...

It really depedns what you want from your console, if you want a Blue Ray player, try getting one cheaper than a PS3, if your not bothered about all the extra's the PS3 has to offer, why would you have been interested in it in the first place? That's my take on it, anyone that seriously thought the PS3 would cost the same as anXB360 really needs more common sense, the technology in it is simply too newfor that to happen.

...I'm interested in just how much money Sony is going to be losing by selling each console for $500 and $600... Analists were saying that it may cost Sony close to $900 to make each one (of course this was before we knew there would be two), so I don't know how well this will hold up with investors...

Well Ive just worked out how much roughly it will be over here.

€599 = £409.95 so call it £400 for the 60gb version
€499 = £341.51 so call it £350 for the 20gb version

but if you convert from $ to £'s its even cheaper

$599 = £321.89 so call it £350 for the 60gb version
$499 = £268.15 so call it £300 for the 20gb version

I used the Oanda FX converter

So I guess its not as steep as we thought just sounds expensive.

i would like the 60GB version, but it sounds expensive, and what are the advantages? on my computer, i've only used 10GB over 4 years! so the PS3 i takle it you will be able to upgrade!

Well I still think that no rumble = BS... I mean I understand that it doesn't work together ( rumble and 6waythingy), but I want both. So I think you should be able to switch. I mean honestly, that turn your arm action might be great for a flight game, but the rest...I hope for the best...

It'll be closer to the Euro conversion because that includes VAT, America doesn't have VAT.

Good God that's priced high, I think I might to nix the reservation...I'm not paying that kinda money. Hell I can get a computer for that.

I'm looking at it like this (which is rather objective, all be it positive)

For the $500 model, you don't get the big hard drive, the memory card slots, or HDMI, or Wifi.

For a $100 more, you get 40 more GB of space, WiFi, HDMI, all the memory card ports, etc.

It certainly, IMO, seems like a good deal for the extra $100.

I'm dead set on what I'm getting, and I think you all should be too, buying the $500 model is as pointless as the core model 360.

Also, if you buy the 360, you have to fork out another $200+ to offer some of the same capabilities of the PS3 (next gen video format and WiFi). That doesn't even include HDMI output. or 1080p.

Which brings me to my next point.

As far as I know, the 360 cannot output 1080p, because it has no HDMI or DVI. Problem? Well the HD-DVD's all being release are 1080p, sooo....how is the 360 going to play them?

What's this 6 way "Motion" sensor thing on the controler meant to do? Sorry if this has been explained, there has been too much news. :D

The rumble on the DS2 controler I never really notice anyway. I'm concerntrating on a game so hard I never even notice it's rumbling, so I don't think I'll be much of a loss for me.

Meh the 360 still has cooler games in my opinion. I never really liked my PS2 all that much save for 2 or 3 games which were really good...GT3 being one but not GT4 since I didn't like it all that much. In a few years when the system isn't 600 bucks I'll get one.
