PS3 General Discussion

Interesting bit from BBC News.com. A Sony UK Exec says the 60Gb will be priced around £425. It could go up or down, he says. But that's a good sign. I was worried a £499+ would be the going rate. BBc News.com
Why do we (the UK) have to pay the bloody most for every god damn thing on this plannet, does my nut in . I'll still buy it, when I'm not too sure, depends on the launch lineup and releqse schedule of games after launch.

YSSMAN - As if Nintendo and Microsoft never stole anything correct? Please, stop pointing the holy gun and ignoring the other occasions where your "beloved" were just as guilty.

As for you thinking Sony's conference was merely "meh". I'll have you know, to this date, there is nothing on any console that matches the visual quality of MGS4, a game that isn't even more than 18 months into development. So, how that is "meh" I have no idea, perhaps it's that thick cloud of bias floating around your eyes.

I Love my DS2 the way it is, and for me making it lighter is the best way to improve it by far, plus I have fairly big hands, but prefer a smaller controller, Ive always hated the xbox pads too big and bulky, but the Gamecube pad was very good, and a good layout.so the mockup seen above is a good waypoint between the GC and PS pad.

Live4speed, I agree about the price been closer to the euro price conversion, but Im betting they decide to add an extra £50 to the end price, Im just concerned about game prices, the console is a one off but games are where the money is made and im betting they are close to £50 per game.

[edit]

Now if the pad looked like this, it would make me happ, bring it on Wii love it ;)

Jesus just resepect the man's opinion...if he's thinks it's meh then he thinks its meh...which is far better then I think of the system. Seriously the PS3 is a rip off at it's price and I'm going to assume people will buy the 360 over it just because of price. Sure their will be a few good games coming for the PS3 but nothing I can't live with out.

There nothing I can't live without on any games console, I still buy the odd games console and the PS3 so far is the onl one with exclusive games I actually want. The XB360 has Forza 2 coming out, but that's it, the PS3 has MGS4 (the best game series ever imo, II might add) and more, and a blue-ray player, which is somethnig I would be investing in either way eventually, should I buy an XB360 or a PS3, so for me the PS3 is the bargain.

It's interesting how many people consider the PS3 a bargain, with a price of $600 for the complete system. It is a gaming console for the most part after all.

But I do too. You're getting some serious bleeding edge technology that you can't even get in a PC. Maybe the $500-600 price point will drive a bunch of people to buy 360s and Wiis this Christmas, but I have a feeling that there will still be a lot of PS3 shortages. I'm going to have to keep myself entertained this year, because this is going to be one of the slowest to arrive Christmasses in history. :D

Oh, and I give all three camps an A.

I think the PS3 basic package is a bargin. Here's how I see it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Technically, the Xbox 360 is Uber-expensive too.

Xbox 360 ($300.00)
+20gig HDD ($100.00)
+WiFi Adaptor ($100.00)
+Xbox Live ($70.00)
+HD-DVD Player ($?)

Total = $570.00 + And that price doesn't include a HD disc player or Super Audio CD player.

spot on.

Ive just watched the Nintendo press confrence and im really excited about that too, I really want twilight pricess and crystal chronicles, to be honest for me PS3 offeres more for the money plus a better selection of games 1st and 3rd party, the only real game I want to play on a 360 is forza 2 but im not laying out another 300+ to play one game, so the ps3 makes more sense for me as an purchase choice, and the Wii also makes more sense, yes its under powered but the games will be great and very addictive. I can see it now, me my dad and some friends playing Wii golf with the contorllers and having a great time at the weekend games night. cant wait.

That's like me, on the XB360 there's Forza 2, ont he PS3 theres GT5, MGS4, 28 day's (is that the new mname for 2 day's to Vegas does anyone know, and if not, 2 day's to Vegas seem's like it could be worth watching for) that Indian Jones esque jungle adventure game looked awesom as well imo, I forgot it's name, then there's the enxt Getaway which if the controls are good, should be a superb game.

That jungle game didn't have a name. At first I thought it was a next-gen Pitfall Harry game!

No price or launch date for the Wii yet? Did Microsoft give a price etc for the HD-DVD add-on? I need to look around.

I would like to see a demonstartion of the blu-ray playback of the PS3 sometime soon. But I'm guessing there won't be any actual PS3 consoles on show until the Tokyo Game Show.

I just want all (and certainly the majority) of PS3 games playing at 60fps. That will win me over completely. Too many 360 games have disappointed me at being only 30fps. Still, I have more than enough 360 games to look forward to such as Fable 2, Forza 2 and Halo 3. Shame the trailers I saw of the games were either pre-rendered or didn't show much.
Gears of War looks pretty good, if the trailer was from in-game.

Well, plenty to get stuck into in the next 12 months or so.

i prefer the DS/DS2 than any other controller. also the PS3 is a bargin like you said, look at the kit you get with it! and it doesn't have a HD-DVD, it has Blue Ray.

I didn't go out and say that neither Nintendo nor Microsoft have never stolen ideas before, but when Sony did it, it was blatantly obvious with the motion sensor and the central hub button as well. I suppose that immitation only proves that the two ideas were great, but nevertheless, the ideas were origional, werent they?

I still think youre making an awfully hude deal over everything that PS3 has shown thus far. you complain about the bias that I have, and yet you completely tear down everything else from Nintendo, and more than anything, Microsoft. I have nothing against Sony in this situation as I know they are going to make a quality product, and offer what may be the best system on sale, but I so far have been rather unimpressed with their showings. Sure, the games look great, but they arent making me say that I "need" a PS3 to go play Warhawk, MGS4, etc.

It is a difference of opinion, again, and I'm sure you would say that you are some kind of "expert" when it comes to video games, yadda yadda yadda. I don't care, because when it comes down to it, Sony has to prove to me that their system and their games are worth buying. I bought a PSOne, I bought a PS2, but the purchase of a PS3 does not rank too high on my list of things to do. The combination on high-price, games (thus far) that don't look outstandingly better than the 360, having fewer than five franchises I care about, and HD-capabilities that really don't make a difference to me, it just doesnt matter anymore.

IMO, Sony has gotten too big for it's shoes, and they almost seem to be riding on the fact that it is a Playstation to sell consoles. I will probably buy one, eventually, but it just isnt that important. Gran Turismo has always been the key factor in my PS purchases, so we will see what happens. But with the 360 allready lining up the HD-DVD drive, Forza 2, Fable 2, the Marvel MMORPG, F.E.A.R, Prey, Viva Piniata! (yeah, I said it!), and Halo 3 (yeah, I'm a stupid, moronic Halo fan that will eat-up anything Halo)... Well, the 360 wins out. But, thats just my opinion...

live4speed
I think the PS3 will be a sell out, I honestly do.

There isnt any question that the PS3 will sell out damn near everywhere it is sold. It will be interesting to compare the 360 launch to the PS3 launch here in the US, but the PS3 crowd will probably be larger because of their immense fanbase... But the price may hurt them as well. You can't make any offical calls as the market is tough to predict, but I would say a sellout status within the first few days would probably happen.

Its easy to respect the first time, but going on and on and on and on about it is just border line trolling. We got his point 75 posts ago. Now it seems like an obsession, He can prove how uninterested he is by not posting anymore 👍 He's made his point now he's dragging it on. Max_DC has already pointed out a lot in the locked thread.

Simple enough, if you dont like the games or its features dont buy it. If you like them all and cant afford it, save up for it. Never settle. I didnt settle for a $15,700 base model Mazda 3 I, I passed on it, went to another dealer and got a better car for a little more money a 5-Door for $800 more.

No, they weren't original, because arcades have had it for a while (MULTIPLE games in which these kind of features were used, all by 3rd party developers) and Microsoft even had a SideWinder that had most of these features before, again, modeled after another 3rd party controller before it. None of these "ideas" that you are praising are original, they are simply a first time to become a standard in the mainstream.

I won't be buying mine this year. :(

best we south americans can do is go to paraguay in late 07 and pick a PS3 already chipped:D by them i hope the price is 499 for the 60gig one...

Here are some PlayStation 3 notes I can recall from E3's coverage.

* 60GB and then a 20GB version hard drive
ANALYSIS: The G4 coverage says this is like a Microsoft deal. I have no idea as to how much memory these games may require to hold all kinds of stuff. But I surely think this would get you out of the mood of carrying a lot of Memory Cards (I need a PS1 card here personally). Maybe this is where Sony's going to play XBOX's game. The XBOX has long had a hard drive system. It was one of the components in which people (even myself) ragged on. Now Sony wants in on their own hard drive package. I think this may work out VERY well for Sony. Who knows? It should be a sweet thing of beauty. May also be the death of the Memory Card.

* six degrees of freedom with controller
ANALYSIS: The G4 coverage was talking about "uh oh..." for the Nintendo Revolution. Six degrees of freedom is something I may not know too well, but I can think of something like this working for first-person shooters and (maybe) racing games as well. Can you imagine Gran Turismo or the next ToCA Race Driver by tilting the joystick to mimic steering the wheel?

* "Online gaming is like the air we breathe. We need it."
ANALYSIS: You know where I stand about online play. I don't have the hardware, I don't have the money, I don't have the Broadband, I just can't do it and probably not use it religiously. I think now (more than ever), Sony is thinking, "now we TAKE IT to Bill Gates and his Micro-softie crap!" So what do they do? They are launching THEIR online service. This is going to give love where love is due for Sony types. Upcoming games of many genres could be all further enhanced. I've always considered online as a secondary or optional element. Nowadays, use of the Internet to all sorts of things is sort of required to many. I'm a big racing game fan. So I can only imagine GT5 getting the online treatment so people can stop complaining and start playing [to beat the other player's/players' ass/asses in a race].

GAMES
===
"Resistance: Fall of Man"
For some reason, I imagined this was something like that "Call of Duty" title for the XBOX360 that was a launch title (I forget). Only more futuristic and with aliens and robots.

"Ridge Racer 7"
This is old school at its finest- wireframed Japanese babe, sick-looking cars, city street action... classic Ridge Racer. This bad boy will finally give us the Ridge Racer love our non-PSP owning types a Ridge Racer to love with console play. More Ridge Racer games have been on Sony with any other company. Only Nintendo and Microsoft have seen some Ridge Racer action with Nintendo getting more than one serving.

"Final Fantasy XIII"
Looks sweet, but... where's FF doce (Spanish for 12)?

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots"
Let me tell you something. If you aren't excited or interested in this game, then you need help. Even racing-game-till-death-do-us-part me is jacked about this game. I have very little MGS experience.

"Warhawk"
Beautiful... but why bring it back? I still have the demo of the VERY, VERY, OLD Warhawk game on a PS1 disc. Now they bring it back and looks lovely. I kept getting my ass kicked in the Warhawk demo, of course.

"Eight Days"
It's a movie done DAMN well! However (not to prove anything), most video games in the mold of movies can be horribly bad, much less the traditional GTA-clone. This game has promise. This was almost like me trying to compare "Final Fantasy 7's" PS3 Tech Demo" to "Final Fantasy: Advent Children." It just looks dazzling, babe! I thought this was a movie. But tihs was a movie that LOOKS like a movie and has that movie theater feel to it. I bet someone with a home theater package probably think "Eight Days" is a movie. Only recent "Eight" I can remember is either "Eight Mile" or "Eight Legged Freaks." I think "Eight Mile" came first... Anyhow, this looks like a movie and really has that Hollywood feel to it.

"Virtua Fighter 5"
Since Sega's collapse as a console player, the other consoles been getting Sega's content, and the Virtue Fighter series is no different. This is the first real VF since "Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution," which marked 10 years of beating peoples' asses and maybe getting a Ring Out if you're desperate for a win. Now, I had a chance to look at the VF5 mini-site, and all the characters from VF4: Evolution are in the game (even my favorite character, Kage-Maru). But there will be two new characters. I only know one of them, which is Eileen. There's another guy somewhere, but I forgot who he was. See people? It goes to show you just how marketable women are. Anytime you remember a game for a specific girl, it's a beautiful thing. That's dig-able, right player? ^_^

"Tekken 6"
(more info today on G4, so I reserve my commentary)

"Lair"
Amazing. Just about slaying dragons and taking on big bosses. Solid title.

Comments, anyone?

You won't be chipping PS3's anythime soon, besides that, what would you chip one for, you can't copy the games, they're multi-region so imports don't matter, there's nothng to chip a PS3 for.

I personally have seen more games that interest me on the PS3 than the XB360, it's all personal opinion. If you don't, fine, but as much as you don't, there's people that do, just like there's people like me who see the PS3 as a bargain because I'll happily make use of the blue ray drive for more than games, and that alone makes the PS3 a bargain.

it is something you guys from europe and north america are not very used to, its not part of your reality, but ever since the old atari days, PIRACY has played a big part on videogame market overseas.

mostly because big companies ignore the rest of the world, we get most of the games at a cheaper price thru piracy. of course in europe chipped videogames mean that you can play import games, but that´s not really what they are all about.

worldwide launch? that a bunch of BS. their world is japan, australia, north america and europe. that´s not were i live. so to get games in poor countries like brazil and others, its very normal that you expend a huge amout of money in the original console, but after that, you put a chip inside and play pirate games.

i´ve once laid down the price comparision just to make clear why that happens. they will chip the PS3 and make copies of blu-ray discs. it will take some time, maybe a year, but there´s a huge market to support, so they will figure it out. the 360 was already hacked in asia, and its starting to come to latin america. i think by the end of 2007 i can get a chipped PS3... if it wasen´t for game copies, i would never had a videogame in my life. just too expensive to get one here.

just a quick reminder:

my monthly income = 800
x box 360 here = started at 3.200, right now is 2.500 but it won´t get bellow the 2.000 mark anytime soon.

so 3 months of work to buy one console... so it is very expensive and that´s why there´s market for piracy

Oh I know about the situation in South America, but you can't copy Blue-Ray games, all PS3 games will be on Blue-Ray and thus far there's no way of copying them at the moment, and like DVD's when they fist came out, it costs a lot for blank Blue-Ray disks in the first place, so buying a copied game probably won't be much cheaper even if somone does find a away of copyin the disks pretty soon.

I'm kind of sad that they let the boomerang go. NOBODY even tried the damn thing. They just switched back to the stupid DS2 design (though the layout it brilliant, the design blows) based on stupid complaints on the internet and crap.

That, AND there is no rumble feature. Sony lost a lot of balls.

The phrase "if it aint broke, dont fix it" springs to mind. However i liked the boomerang design and am a little dissapointed in sony for not bringing out that controller. I guess they had their reasons though, maybe it just wasnt ergonomic enough?

Spec....

yes, each generation is getting tougher in my opinion... i don´t know what Fatassbr thinks about this, but it seems that are less gamers these days than it used to be... (here in brazil) it´s way more expensive, its hard to find games in small cities, there´s no support from sony and micro$oft, i mean... its geting harder to be a gamer here. i know i will endure a lot of trouble getting a PS3 to myself...:grumpy:

Just in case I was misunderstood, I do indeed consider the $600 PS3 a bargain, as Solid Lifters pointed out. And like I said previously, I was looking at spending at LEAST $600 to get a 360 HD version with "goodies" i didn't want.

Another thing that's funny is how people descrbe the Wii as underpowered. I know I know, compared to the two behemoths it comes up pretty short. But look what's been done on the GameCube. Resident Evil 4 was a masterpiece. Some game pushes the most polygons on IT among the GC, XBox and PS2, so it's no slouch. The Wii will be 5-10 times as powerful. I can just imagine how sweet the coming games are going to be for it. Now... how do I get used to that weird controller? :D

I was worried about the Wii's output going into E3, but I think Super Maro Galaxy proved that power isnt everything, and it appeared to be nearly on par with the first-gen 360 titles in terms of looks. As the Nintendo dude said in the begining of their press conference, they are focused on making GAMES for people to have fun PLAYING, not some flashy "razzle-dazzle" system that can deliver a few games that play well, but otherwise only look pretty.

...I have never been Zelda fan before, but after watching the Wii demo for Twilight Princess, I think that alone is worth the investment for the Wii. Added to that, I was also impressed by Red Steel, which looks like a lot of fun to play, despite the fact you might look like an idiot while playing it...

Again, I've also pulled a 180 on the Wii controler as well, going from hating it to loving it. After seeing it in action and actually having an understanding for how it is going to work in the new games, I love it. I didn't have a whole lot of faith in Nintendo before, but I think now that we are nearly post-E3, I can't wait for the Wii to hit the shelves...!
