PS3 General Discussion

I like it, its a breeze to go from setup>photos>music>video>game>web>friends>chat etc, I dont think its anything like a "dashboard" more like a desktop with mouse and keyboard support for it. The XMB is a great system that keeps things clean, easy to find and quick access to everything including instant thumbnails. Its more intuitive and much better than the 360's dashboard.

I totally agree, the PSP and PS3 interface is easy to use and quick to get to the bit you want. Im glad they have gone this rout and not the way of the 360, with its ohh so MS centric interface, so un original and dull its almost a chore to use, Just my opinion of course.

We should get some great new info this monday, as Sony is expected to make an announcment that nobody is expected to have thought "Way out Left field" I think the quote was from a gaming site. guess we will have to wait and see.

I agree that the XMB is probably the easist to navigate, while still retaining a lot of the features. With the dash board, you're left navigating blades and other tedious menu's, with un-necessary button presses, while the XMB allows you to *very quickly* access all these menu's.

Also, look out for the Oct issue of OPM, they are going to cover to PS3 games as their headline stories, one we already know about, but the other, we don't...should be exciting!

well i have a psp and i think the interface rocks.. so im very glad its the same on the ps3. everything is easy accessable with the left-right up-down buttons. it looks good :)... i hope it will have the same features as the psp.

i really think the ps3 will be the best buy ever :)

When I found out that Sony had carried the PSP UI over to the PS3 I was so thrilled... It looks really grown up and its very easy to use, sony has been really good reciently with the ergonomic layouts of most of its one screen menus on their products (like the cyber shots, sony ericssons etc... all logically layed out).... I can imagine how all the features on the system would all have a similar PSP theme (like the web browser, folders etc etc...)...... thats one thing Sony have done right...now sort out the controller and the price..... (im still mourning over no rumble..:indiff: )

i think this is a better video of the interface.. its in a further stage..

Actually I think that version has been scrapped. Too many resources were used, so it was simplified etc. I'm pretty sure that's NOT how the final version will look, what was shown from the final SDK's above is what we'll see on our PS3's, not that.

However, browsing will still be available I'm sure.

Interesting PlayStation Announcements Planned

First in a series of unveilings planned for Leipzig

SPOnG caught up earlier this week with the good people of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for a quick chat about all things PlayStation and we are pleased to let you know that the frustrating post-E3 wait for proper information on our PlayStation future is just about to end, with the first in a series of major announcements being made this coming Monday from Leipzig.

We can assure you that this first unveiling will, shall we say, be something you are very unlikely to have foreseen, coming from way out of leftfield. Suffice to say it brought a smile to our face as we think it will do yours. Check in here first thing on Monday when we’ll be able to disclose the full details of this announcement, as well as picking up the first tasty news droppings from all the other publishers at Leipzig.

It would also seem that Sony has seriously taken on board the many criticisms targeted at the company following a poorly received E3 PlayStation 3 showing and done what it does best – gone into lockdown mode whilst its development and marketing teams get on with the serious, hard work of ensuring that both the PS3’s technical offering and the marketing message are both spot on for the looming 17th November launch.

:dopey: can´t wait... official PS3 hype starts tomorrow:sly:

...after months of bashing...

I'd be interested to hear what this "left-field" news is on the PS3 that is supposed to change everyone's mind, so hurry up and get to Monday!

I'm not saying SpOng isn't uhh...reliable, but in the past they've promised and under delivered, lol. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I'm just a little skeptical since no one else has reported anything (with the exception of maybe two other sites...who say SpOng said...lol).

^^^^^^Killjoy, Heh :). I guess we will wait and see. I'll take my psp to work and try to find a starbucks during my break to get on the web to see if anything comes up:tup:

its fine aslong as when you put the game in it goes straight into the game (dont no dont have a psp)

with the psp if u enter the game and the psp is turned off. when u boot it directly goes to game ... i suppose...
when its on and you put a game in the psp the interface directly goes to the game you entered. it doesnt boot it up but thats just a simple press of the x button

Ya Hsin begins PCB shipments for Sony PS3

Ya Hsin Industrial has begun shipping printed circuit boards (PCBs) for Sony PS3 game consoles, with the shipments expected to contribute NT$200 million (US$6.1 million) in monthly revenues for the maker, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN). The company, which is seeing strong growth in assembly orders for LCD TVs and handsets, indicated that about 60% of the PCBs it produces are for internal use, according to the paper. Its revenues for August may hit a monthly record of more than NT$4 billion, the paper added.

yeah this one seems to be at a more feature-full/finished state. This stuff thats "new" now doesnt look like its got half as many features and useability stuffs as that XMB vid. I was really impressed by this video of its Front End. Especially the multi web browser thing. And a continueation of the PSP's fast and frantic UI. If i want to go fast to the settings menu... DAMN IT LET ME GO FAST! And the PSP/PS3 lets me! YAY

There is simply no excuse for a slow, cumbersome, feature less, uncustomisable interface these days.

Oh i'd like to add... th eonly thing that seriously bugs me about the PSP style interface is its slowness in caching thumbnails. if the PS3 is faster and doesnt need to load them at every menu change (like it appears to be in this video) then i'll be much happier and able to nav easier without delay. :)

Apologies if it's been posted before but has no one posted the Gamestop interview with SCEA President Kaz Hirai (Aug 18th)?
Nothing revealing but he does mention that PS3's are yet to be manufactured. Though as posted above the parts are being made. Anyway link.

Hirai: PS3 shortages inevitable

Only 700,000 per major territory and production hasn't begun on the next-gen console yet

Sony US boss Kaz Hirai has been speaking to GameSpot about the launch of the PS3 and he's dropped a fair few details and indeed issued some stark warnings about just how easy it will be to get your hands on the console, come this year's November launch period.

Quizzed on launch plans for the console, Hirai began by re-stating Sony's position that there would be two million units worldwide within a calendar year of launch, but on the more thorny issue of allocations per major territory he added, "Since we're going with three territories, we haven't really come up with an allocation just yet. But even if you do the simple math you're talking about less than 700,000 units per territory, per major territory, between launch and the end of the year. So even if there was some fluctuation - you give Japan more, you give the US more, what have you - you're going to end up with some shortages."

Hirai then added, "Unfortunately, I think it's going to be very much of a challenge to be able to meet every single unit demand that's out there in the market. That's just a logistical impossibility. Unless we suddenly say, "Well we want to wait until June of next year to launch because we want to stockpile product," I don't think that's the approach we want to take."

So not much prospect of waking up with a PS3 delivered fresh from Santa's bulging sack this Christmas morning then, but Hirai then went to admit that Sony hasn't begun making the units themselves yet, although production is apparently, just about to kick off. "We haven't started manufacturing yet. Some of our ops guys were actually just in China, and also in Japan just reviewing the [production] lines and everything else. But they are, again, preparing as we speak to get the manufacturing going. We've not announced and we haven't set really a specific date to say, "As of this day we're going to start manufacturing.".

Despite acknowledging that shortages are inevitable, Hirai however did remain optimistic on the console's longer-term prospects saying in the light of the recent Yankee analysts report, Sony would retain its overall market share as the market plays out over the next few years. "My plan basically is to make sure that we keep at least as much market share as we have had with the PS1 and the PS2. We don't plan on ceding any of the market share to our competitors, especially after the cycle has gone deep".

I still hope no £120-£150 deposit will happen.

This means that PS3's will be selling privately for at least double their price. I'll have to order a few.

Well on Saturday I'll be on the Leipzig Games convention. Hopefully I am able to get my hands on the PS3 and the Wii. I'll post my impressions here on Sunday....

There are no playable games at Leipziz. For the PS3 I'm positive, and for the Wii I'm pretty sure. You'll be able to watch trailers, but there are not public booths set up with playable demo's.

So far Sony has only made one announcement at Leipzig!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!

The PS2 will come in pink in Europe. Well, what can I tell you, unless nothing comes in the next two days (Sony has a press conference Wed) then SpOng is full of ...yea. I knew that already though.

GO PRESS!

For those of you who care, this is a perfect example of the media generating clicks for revenue, all those "unreliable" sites. Yea, this is how it works.
