What track for round 5?

Guess it's a 3 way tie, with me Will and Rich all having 2 photo finishes we didn't quite get.
Like with you, I think I had enough to take the checkered flag yesterday...

...if only the game would've allow me to prove it. :grumpy:

At this point, the only thing I can do anymore is run a series part-time and hope the race doesn't last more than an hour.

Can't do Fridays, unfortunately.

If you can do Saturday morning you'll like what I have starting in September.
Short races, no tuning, spec street cars on sports and comforts. (well, there's one race car but it's vintage and no ABS so... )

I managed to run a very good outlap just after my pit and i caught Tim in the main straight (Lap 10). Started to race and work with him to catch the leader (Carra). Unfortunately, he couldn't keep my pace and i had to go alone.

Moot point since I got disconnected, you definitely had speed but I let you go. :P
There was some lag between us (probably related to my cable modem about to drop and the ocean separating us) so the bump-drafting was erratic and felt a bit dangerous. I tried convincing you to leap-frog (which was working fantastically with rich... and about 10mph faster top speed) but when I went around you bumped again. So not being in the points chase any more I didn't want to ruin your day with a lag-crash, and I also didn't want to drive off-road to stay in your draft.

I just wish I wasn't the only one respecting the lines on the Mulsanne. One of the reasons I always write-off LeSarthe and was 100% expecting it to be my drop round... Getting that last second of pace by driving on hard shoulders and over sleeping policemen is just something I won't do.

GR though... congrats on the win and sucks that Rich's playstation robs us of another good finish. >:E

Rich... Have you tried clearing the game data (not your save data, you need that) and re-installing GT5?

These spooky disconnects of yours are just not something that could be caused by networking issues. You're staying in contact with PSN and the GT5 server network the entire time. It has to be either:
* something seriously wrong in the ps3 (bad memory, overheating cell processor... but hardware issues would manifest in every game, not just gt5 and probably result in a hard-crash)
* more likely is software issues which could be solved with the tried and true method of burning the house down and rebuilding it

So if you haven't tried it yet I would
1. delete gt5 game data
2. let the disc re-install game data
3. install latest patch
--- problem still there?
4. back up all save data
5. find instructions on a complete HDD wipe and re-install the ps3 operating system

I also recommend the above. I did it once as well.
The worst part is waiting for all the 5GB of updates to re-download.

I'll keep an eye out for it. đź‘Ť

Now I remember spotting a lag spike from you around Lap 6-7. For a moment, I thought my connection bit the dust.

And yes, doing the leap-frog worked out pretty well. I was actually doing a wave-the-hand motion for Travis to do the same (like he could actually see it anyways).

I'll have to do that overnight. Something tells me the download will take days. :nervous:

The only other game I've played online extensively was Warhawk a long time ago. Had issues there too.

Just how old is that PS3?

I did the reformat on mine trying to iron out connection issues during one series or another last spring. The main reason I did it was we cloned my son's old ps image to mine so I would have my saved game data. At the time I didn't know I could just copy the saved game data via flash drive. Doing that plus a new router seems to have cured up most of my connection problems. Still get a random modem de-synch, but that usually happens during the week.

On another note, does anyone know the PSN's login server's URL or IP address? I'd like to see if I can tracert it. I've noticed during the week my PS speed tests are about 25% of what they are on the weekend.

You know the USAF built the, at the time, 33rd fastest super computer out of 1700+ of the older PS3s?

You might be able to sell yours to them for replacement parts and get a newer model.

Then there is this. Don't know if it's still active. Heard about it from one of our security (IT) guys at work. Didn't read the whole wiki article. Distributed computing.

1. put a cheap hub between your playstation and the router
2. plug computer into another port on the hub
3. run wireshark to capture packet traffic
4. power on the ps3 and do stuff

the computer on the hub will grab all the traffic the ps3 is sending and receiving. you'll have addresses for everything it contacts.

2008 40 GB model. I put a 160GB drive in.

wow, your fatty sounds like it actually might be older than mine. I'm on an 80GB from summer 2008.

Yeah, I was getting up near 200 in the red on 6th when we really had it working. It's always faster at LeSarthe, the straights are just so long. đź‘Ť

When I was in college at RIT the computational physics lab built a super-cluster out of ps3s which did real-time gravitational simulations.

I want to say Winter/Spring 2008 since I still have the original box and it has images of Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and NBA 2008 on the back.

Currently reinstalling the patches. 26% for update 1 of 17. Oh boy. :ill:

I got mine as a wedding present... pretty easy to remember. ;)

I have been analyzing my network traffic and it seems that my GT5 sever is in Colorado. I'm not sure if I can post all the IP address's here (I'm still doing some work on filtering them and Jordan( site owner) may not like it)

Do what Tim said, it's a fun way to waste 30mins đź‘Ť

Mine's an 80GB from Nov/Dec of 2008. :)
A LOT of time on it now.(knocks on wood quickly)

Ah, so that's how I can get a new one! đź’ˇ

Of course, I'm not even at step one yet, but I like my odds of beating GT6 to the finish line. :sly:

Anyways, if any series out there needs a quick field filler on a weekend, just let me know. đź‘Ť

My playstation actually hits 2 hubs before it gets to my router. Will that matter to wireshark?

Hmm Now that I think about it, it might be better to move my modem and router to the basement and set it up down here. Get the PS3 a direct shot to the router. Gotta figure out how to bring the phone lines hot from down here though and the rest of the network as well. Might make the wife happy to get that equipment and all it's blinky lights out of our bedroom.

Will wireshark capture the traffic over a wirelessly connected laptop?

I've got it downloaded but it's a bit late to be playing with it tonight.

Direct shot to the router doesn't matter. Hubs are dumb repeaters that only add latency equal to the amount of resistance in the circuitry.

As far as the other questions, this is what you're doing:

index_07.png

The "TAP" (Transmission Analysis Point fyi) in the diagram is your hub (it must be a hub not a switch). The playstation traffic passing through the hub on it's way to the internet it gets broadcast so a computer can snoop on all of the traffic by being plugged into the same hub.

Yeah, I think I remember that discussion in the CCNA classes I took 5 or so years ago regarding hubs and switches. Most of the general consumer "switches" are mis-labeled and really just hubs. As you say, the only latency involved is the atomic integrity of the conductive material. Still, every link in the chain is a potential weak/failure point.

Will play with wire shark later this week. After last night when Owens "dragged" ;) me in to a lobby then left me to fend for myself against his buddies and it turned into a very late night of racing, I don't have the energy at the moment to tinker with wireshark or rebuilding my network.

Am browsing the manual learning a bit about wireshark while at work, which might turn out to be the only productive thing I do today. Effin network is running like molasses in Jan this morning.

Actually, its the other way around now. Switches have gotten so cheap its hard to find a real hub faster than 10Base-T. Lots of GE and FE hubs are running switching ASICs under the hood.

(btw my B.S. is in Routing, Switching, and Telecommunications; if that wasn't obvious :sly: )

My system is a 60GB model, no idea on build date would have to check.

Internet is DSL, but works pretty good. System is plugged directly into the modem. (with a 30 foot cable )

I've DC'd maybe a handful of times since the game was released. A few of those were fixed rooms where the host DC'd, so everyone got kicked.

I run wireless (I know it's not recommended), the modem's about 10 feet away from the PS3. I rarely have trouble with connection.

I was working on a AS degree in Networking when this full time job came and I couldn't pass it up. Forgotten most of what they tried to teach me, especially ACLs. You mind if I pick your brain some regarding my home network? What's your doctorate in?

Maybe you can help Fred?

Help Fred? ROFL. Hand Fred a flamethrower then go help Rich.

Fred should probably invest in FCoE and high-density computing...

A few less cables...

Whatever... and I don't have a PhD. I ran out of money after an A.S. in Systems Administration and an B.S. in Advanced Networking and Security. And all the training I've been through for my current job could classify as "post graduate" work in Enterprise Storage.

Distance is very rarely the issue with wireless. The issue is reliability and delay, etc.
Basically, if you DC, or get lag punted, lag punt someone else, it might be just because you didn't spend $4 on an ethernet cable.

BTW, Back on topic... Good series everyone đź‘Ť
Glad I was able to live up to the audacity of driving a 'trophy topper' gold car.

Steve, if you put up the final round results (I disconnected so I don't have the replay) I can archive the series and take it off the 'active' list.

Yeah, gratz winning the championship đź‘Ť
Ditto. đź‘Ť

Wish I could've put up a challenge, but my engines have a 50% failure rate.

Finished the re-install this morning and the game seems a bit faster, but as for my connection, I won't know until I race again.
