Yeah, I saw that around a bit, it's a fine line between getting a good start and jumping the gun, it seems people are pretty happy to dance on it.

i now this a off-topic here but today it' a great day!!! a Football Club (soccer for our american friends :D) called Barcelona will pass today over Real Madrid in the quarter final of the spanish cup jijiji go Barça gooooo :sly:

Sorry SG15 but it's not a great day because of football... It's a great day cause my new PSN ID is GTP_Litchi 👍

I hear you. But it all comes down to each driver. If everybody is sticking to the rule "Do not floor it before the car ahead of you go", the start will quickly becoma a single file from a double file.

It's the ambiguity that makes it feel like a random freeway drag race to me. I don't even try at the start anymore.

OK so above we've got a start-finish line and 8 cars rolling up to it. Car 1 floors it and then car 2 responds. Now is car 3 paying attention to car2 or car1 as "the car in front"?
If it's car 1, then car 2 and 3 are going to go at the same time, but is car 4 paying attention to car 2 or 3 as it's signal? or more likely car 1 since he can see car 1 take off. When you get farther back to car 7,8 and beyond it's just pretty random when you're going to actually start after the "do I go when the car physically in front of me (5 is behind 3) or logically in front of me (5 is behind 4) goes" compounds down the line so that your start is dependent on the start of those in front of you so that the left row might get better jumps than the right row, but at the same time everyone is going to go when the car next to them start in on it creating the impromptu drag race.

I just don't see the benefit. In single file it just waterfalls down the line evenly for everyone. You watch the car directly in front of you and react to it. Everyone gets off and nicely into turn 1 single file with no need to 'zipper'.

Making the field roll single file from the very beginning would lead to huge distances between the front and the back of the grid.

I don't see how that's possible. The cars aren't physically changing size.

Double File

After Turn 1 in A where everyone goes into a single file the distance on the following straight at B will be the same as if they'd gone through Turn 1 single file to begin with.

Single File

btw... Fear my MS Paint skills!

Well, pretty much what is supposed to be everyone's main goal, is to get down to single file by turn 1.
Honestly, our starts are getting good to the point where it doesn't concern me anymore. We've achieved a pretty good balance, some of us still get a little anxious early on in long races, but it's not guaranteed that 3/4 the field will crash in the first 10 laps.
So I'm happy with what we have. :)

From a technical standpoint, it's silly to line up beside each other and try to get in line, when we could just start in line. So while we can say "we're supposed to try to get single file right away", clearly we're leaving passing an option on the table, and we want to be able to make a pass or two by turn one if we get 'the jump'. 💡

I think we drive well enough lately that double file works great as is, with the right drivers.;)

Like I said, I just prefer single file... just answering Denilson's query.

I'm pretty sure the safety record comes from enough people like me not caring about the start. I don't start racing until Lap 2 in this series. I know there probably would have been a turn 1 pile up in the monaco sprint if I hadn't given the spot to GV going into the first turn. (which I did because even though I was in p2 on the inside line I've been around GV enough at the starts to know that he like to be really racy at the beginning so I backed off and let him cut across into turn 1 and filed in behind him.)

So IMO it feels like there's enough people who's sole focus is avoiding chaos that it works out. I know I'm not the only one out there.

But back to my previous post... what does "the car in front of you" mean when there are two cars in front of you? Are p2 & 3 both watching p1? or is p3 supposed to wait for p2 to go? It's the 'trying to get a jump on someone' bit that I don't like about the whole business. It just ends up pretty random since it's not like each row is gassing it when they hit the s/f line, it's all based on the vague notion of "the car in front".

To be honest I use the car directly in front of me, and if I see myself really getting a jump on someone I ease into partial throttle and peddle them, trying to fit in the largest gap front and rear I can fit into.
Often times getting the jump on someone means a messy first turn.

Also I think everyone's driving around traffic has improved, and I think people are learning that getting a great start doesn't mean that much in these long races, or even the sprint races.
There are guys I know will make the move, and guys I know will not make the move, so that helps too. Knowing exactly what your opponent will do always helps. :)

The car in front of you means.. The car 1 spot ahead of you.

You can watch the Monza replay, and watch me holding my throttle until welsh go. I do not go when Redreevos go.. But as I said, not all does that. And I've also lost a spot to false starters... Which is a shame. But I don't bother that much. The worst one was Joshua1994 who overtook me at Monaco. Not the nicest track to loose a spot at.. Especially not when driving an NSX.
Joshua1994, I'm not tring to call you out or anything. We're all good! 👍

So the car logically in front of you (p1,p2,p3...) not the one physically in front of you (p1,p3 | p2,p4 ...)?

Yes, and that is what it's supposed to be.
Of course I've found if you wait for the guy 1 position ahead of you and he's slow to go, you're going to get bum rushed.

I'm always looking at the car one spot in front of me, not the car directly ahead of me.

By the way, now I see me being mentioned... I hope I haven't been too aggressive at starts! If I am, please do tell me. I would never want to be a problem for the other guys 👍 . In any case, those who know me from before PURE, racing in the Integras, would know that I never got into any clash with other drivers, so I'd like to think I'm rather clean :)

No worries nothing bad... just something I've noticed about the starts. Some drivers turn up the pace from 0-10 on a knob. Some like to do it on a switch. And the aliens use a knob it just goes to 11 and they turn it real fast.

Visca El Barca!! 👍

Oh boy! After watching Den's qualifying run earlier I decided I'd stick around and run my first laps at Spa in the Stealth NSX. This wasn't pretty and I'm shocked to say, the rain may be welcome from my pit stall. Ran a best of 2'15.5xx and I think I'll be lucky to run a low 15 for qualifying, just hope I can make D1 :scared:

Boy, this thread really died.. Where's everybody?

Only one who's not racing this week is Minion.. I expect the rest to show up.

Last I checked, I couldn't log onto the servers. I will check again now.

BTW - Nice qualifying time teammate 👍

Im quallifing on Sat as per usual if thats ok as I havent even returned to Spa yet.

Looks like I can log in now.. But.. I am off to volleyball, and the earliest I will be able to qualify would be later tonight.

Not a bad time, considering you are caryying 80kg of ballast. I seem to be running .4-.6 slow with just 40kg of ballast. I did manage a best of '14.3 with the ballast, but that lap was definitely an anomaly and not the norm.

Thnx mate. Not super happy with that time. But I have a hard time keeping it together at Spa for an entire lap.
