QUICK MATCH DISILLUSIONMENT!?!?

I've actually been having fun in Quick Match recently. Hadn't tried it in a while because it was always a bit of a mess with all the disconnections, but that seems to be much better now; haven't had any at all the past couple days. Also, it seems they've bumped up the prize money to seasonal event levels, which is awesome. The dirty racing and absurd penalties are annoying sometimes, but if you can find a relatively clean bunch (or at least one where the idiots are slow enough to fall behind you quickly), it's some fun racing. Certainly more entertaining than grinding seasonals with the terrible AI.

Had some good races with a guy in the FR-S Quick Match tonight; we were pretty closely matched, but he was a bit better than I was (though it appeared he was using a wheel and I was just on a DS3). We had several very close and clean races, and it was a lot of fun. (Interestingly, I've only just now come to realize that Madrid literally has no passing zones; every heavy braking area has a kink or other feature that effectively makes it single-file, unless you want to bounce off a wall or completely blow your line through the following corner and lose a lot more time than you gained, so there's basically no way to get alongside someone and actually complete a pass unless they make a mistake.)
What about the guys at Madrid that seem to be able to overtake every car (even from the back of the grid) on the pit straight on the first lap, always ending up in first place by the first corner - how do they do that? Had one this week that kept pulling it off, and he was then winning every race, with a lap time 6 seconds quicker than anybody else!

I just want to vent, so bare with me. Why do Quick matches exist? I was under the impression KAZ took racing seriously, and frowned upon dirty driving. Quick Matches only seem to reward cheats. I've tried them several times and left every time with a very bad taste in my mouth. I despise them. Perhaps I'm missing something about the concept, and would love some enlightenment.

He's still providing something quick and easy to join (when it works right) so there's no faulting Kaz. The finger of blame points squarely at the weak character of the unethical drivers. That's online gaming for you though. If they can't do it fairly, they'll use other means. Grinning and bearing it is the only option.

Going back to the "use the GSXR or not use the GSXR", I fully intend to whore the hell out of mine now. I've got a garage full of cars that can get around 3:03 to 3:08 that I use for some close racing, but other than a few drivers who I know drive clean, close now means touching in quick match. I don't know if it's because of how many races I've done (too many to count) but from the the first race to the last, I'm targeted by the numpties. A lot are regularly driving GSXRs but they wouldn't know a clean overtake if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.

There's definitely no honour in making yourself a target in a slower car.

Although you can't control it, the worst trial mountain races have over 10 cars and it becomes whacky races.

The best races have about 8 or less cars.

I don't pick the GSXR out of sheer bloody mindedness.

Could be cheating, could be he's just good at timing the starts and is a really good driver (a lot of the folks in that quick match race aren't very good, I've found; even I can beat the majority of 'em by quite a bit). Save a replay and watch it and you can see if he's clearly cheating (e.g. accelerating significantly faster than should be possible, or taking corners much faster). If he's not, you can probably pick up a few tricks from watching him, at least.

Edit: Also been trying some TM races with the Acura HSC, which is somewhat competitive. I'm nowhere near good enough to beat a good GSR, but I've gotten a 3:06 race once or twice. I keep getting stuck in matches with a bunch of Euros with four-digit ping times, though, and it's impossible to make a clean pass on someone when you can't even tell where their car is. (Also, I've discovered that when a car warps across the track and suddenly appears inside of yours, you get the penalty, naturally... :P )

I totally understand your sentiment, and after the first few hours of quick matches I did in November, I was absolutely floored at how broken it all seemed.

But for some reason I was coming back to it, and eventually I figured out the quirks. Patience with getting connected, knowing when and where to just steer clear of traffic to avoid getting victim penalties. Understanding and taking advantage of ghosting (a sketchy but necessary tool.) Those are key. And so it's been like a GT revival for me and a few of my friends. None of us have much time to play, and so online racing was always crap for us, never did it. We just want to jump in and race. QM enables that.

I honestly believe that the key to the success of the GT franchise lies in quick match. I mean, they need to fix the sounds, and there are 10 million other things that people cry about when it comes to GT. But it blows my mind that one of Sony's biggest money makers, indeed the king of the console racers is so hopelessly pathetic when it comes to its online gaming component. Lots of hardcore folks get all that they could ever want in the open lobby. But that's just not going to happen with most gamers - even avid GT fans like myself. The online racing sweet spot for the widest range of gamers would be something like more flexible, numerous, fair and RELIABLE QM events. I hope PD cleans it up and executes it properly for GT7, if not 6.

Half the problem is that if you get stuck behind someone slow you basically can't win in such a short 2 lap race, so people aren't prepared to run the pace of the person in front and will just try to drive through them...

So yes bad drivers and a bad format imo.

My Quick Match reality (I guess you don't need a translation...)

What a horrible online experience this is on a whole.

I agree, you're right, but on some rare occasions, it can be fun.
1. When the connection is good (which doesn't happen most of the time as far as I'm concerned).
2. When the opponents like to race, and not to play pinball with their cars or wacky races (which... etc)

Sarthe is one of my favorite tracks. Unfortunately, seems like everyone feels the need to cut the final chicanes. If I am leading going into those two last turns I just chalk it up as a win and move on. It seems like all PS would have to do is drop anyone who finishes race under penalty.

I agree . . . they do the same thing in 500pp race . . . that's when they aren't punting you off to with late dives!!! Cut the left right combo at the bottom to win! ****'s me!!

I have to say I joined my first Quick Race last night, no clue what I was going to expect. I had an absolute blast racing on Red Bull Ring with up to 13 people, clean racing..no cheaps moves. Loved the grid start too and the possibility of false starts. I will be doing this much more. I even saved the replays and watched it after with all the HUDS off and it was just wicked looking.

Just thought I would fire this up and see how it went.
First race got p8, was working my way up to p4 moving up the inside of the long left hander at the red bull track and he pushed me onto the grass, ended up 5th.
Second race got p6 managed to work my way up to 2nd on the 1st lap, but into the last corner the guy in 3rd dive bombed me and I got a penalty for ramming, after the penalty on the s/f straight I was 6th, worked my way back to 4th on that lap and just after I made 4th place I got D/C'd.

It's such a shame that the game's AI is so horrifically bad and that the online AI is so blatantly rubber banded. I don't have the time anymore to dedicate to an online league, I feel like this game has almost nothing to offer anymore other than horrible online experiences :/

You're racing against other people online, not the AI. Those people have all got different skill levels and only a small percentage know about race craft (or choose to ignore it) so expect the unexpected.

I go into quick matches expecting the worst and hoping for the best. It's the easiest way to cope with "incidents".

The disconnections are totally random as well.

I was originally turned off by the QM experience, until I stopped taking it seriously. Now I'm having a blast just running random cars in the Trail Mt race (turns out the MG TF160 I used for the British Lightweight seasonal is actually competitive here. Go figure.)

Last night I completely embraced the Wacky Races theme and ran a 466PP Renault Avantime (bright purple with neon green rims and a huge spoiler, naturally). Ended up matched with someone in an Odyssey, and had some epic minivan battles for 9th place. Even saved a few replays because it was so much fun.

Got to agree with that.👍

Finding people who'll let you have a good and fair race are few and far between but strip it back to the fact that it's a 2 lap race with the widest choice of cars (500pp and under) means you have to suspend your disbelief when you enter.

I've made a mini game out of baiting the bad drivers when I'm bored. Dropping to the back of the field and putting pressure on every person before I pass them. They're weaving all over the road trying to block you, reacting to imaginary moves you might be thinking of making, make the easy pass when they do and they try to ram you, often ending up in the wall or facing the wrong way. I always give a cheeky little "beep beep" as I overtake too. Nothing like rubbing a bit of salt into wound.

The above should come with a warning though. The target on your back gets bigger and bigger with each race.

Want serious racing? Forget quick match. Join a club.

Yeah, I guess I gotta embrace it more... just a shame that if your kinda too busy for most leagues, it's seemingly impossible to have fun enjoyable racing in GT :/

This 👍

And also, quick matches are supposed to be QUICK, aren't they? But most of the time, they're NOT (at least as far as I'm concerned). So if you just can't join a race quickly, it's a fail.

Edit: La Sarthe is probably the worst place to go :yuck: It's all about ramming and cutting the last chicanes. Sad.

It was a particularly terrible day for QM today. 3 races in an hour, and dirtbags screwed me over early in every race. I saw new and different kinds of connection errors the likes of which I've never seen before. Why can't I just cut my losses sometimes? I'll never get this hour back, lol.

After trying Quick Match the last couple of days, I have to say:

"Come on guys?!?"

🤬🤬🤬

Don't ram! Don't drive like a five year old! Brake at the corners! Overtake like it's your dad's car!

How hard can it be?

:banghead:

ha I just did a quick race where a guy over took me coming out of a corner @ Red Bull track and then slammed on the breaks in front of me giving me a 5 second penalty and then drove off... dis game lol

Also there is a way to lap around the red bull track by just taking most of the corners wide and just cutting back onto the track, it's kinda silly that this track is so broken that its faster to go off than is it so actually drive it properly...

Just did the 500pp race at trial mountain and eventhough every idiot is driving a GSX_r I achieved to be first in my S2000. In the secoundlast corner the GSX-R used me as a brake and rammed me off the road.
Bute the best part is I (!!) got a penalty of 8 secounds while this idiot could go on driving without a penalty. Of course he and the other GSX-Rs shortcutted the last corner and due to this idiot I went from 1rst to 5th -.- I HATE IT!

Why are the penalties so effed up? Nearly in every race there is some ram me from behind, tries to pitt me or drives into my side and I get the penalty for it!

In addition to that, in my opinion they should include a minimum weight to the 500pp race so there is a bigger variety of cars and you don't see half the field with GSX-Rs in your lobby

I have no idea how the penalty system works, but some people seem to be experts at using it.
I use bonnet view, I'm holding a line, the radar shows a car really close to me although I can't see it, wham, I've got a penalty and he goes shooting off !
Or I get deliberately rammed off on a bend, and he gets no penalty !
If I so much as gently touch another car, I've got a penalty.
Bad system.

I've noticed that if another driver starts leaning on you, don't push back. It'll get you a penalty. Likewise, if you're mid corner and get bumped from behind, the penalty system (lottery) judges you as having brake tested that driver and gives a penalty, or the person doing the ramming is far enough off line and gets the penalty themselves. Rammed from behind (ooer) seems to be a 50-50 decision though. Best not to gamble on it and give more room. There's always the next corner to get an overtake on.

The best way of avoiding them, that I've found, is to vary your line. It's slower, but not as bad as getting a penalty.

Assume every driver doesn't drive as well as you until they prove otherwise.

There are some very skilled penalty-givers these days. I feel bad because I do it a lot now, not because I intend to, but because I know which side of the line to be on to not get the penalty. So I put myself on the proper side.

Lots of fun in the Megane race... but man I'm getting some weird ass connection issues. Anyone ever tried driving from the replay cameras' point of view? lol. Also I'm having trouble getting my car to go fast...

Exactly what happened to me but on Bathurst. Also few other different weird glitches including:

Lobby full of drivers practicing but the matchmaking restarts forever.

I enter the lobby, see others racing but I can't and I can't leave to main menu either - just the "track preview" camera.

2nd place award despite winning the race

500-600k credits for a win is very welcome though 👍 And obviously some great replays.

As for the penalty system - one needs to learn it to enjoy these races. Now when I have a close race with someone and the penalty system goes bonkers awarding my opponent a penalty I let them pass me to regain the position.

I have about given up on the quick glitch mess. The last time I tried there were 4 or 5 other cars, & they just set there for one lap then went running all over the grassy areas. It showed me in first place & when the race was over, I went to 4th, & all of a sudden last. Tired it 3 times with the same result. Those guys were out running along the fence crashing into each other & still winning. Made no sense at all.

Is cheating possible? There was a guy in the BRZ lobby called "disergio" and he is from greece. He was constantly leaning on other cars so they get the penalty. And he was raming and shoving his way through.
But there was something strange with this guy. Out of 11 races he always started first and I always 16. (even when the lobby was filled with 10 cars)
And eventhough I started from deadlast I managed to win 5 races. But everytime I won I got the payout of 3. oder 2. place while this disergio was always first with 1 Lap ahead of everyone. So actually he won every 11 races, even when he came 6. to the finish line once and once didn't even start of the finishline.

And it wasn't the first time. I already was in the same lobby with him 2 days ago and had the same problems.
Only when he leaves the lobby everything gets back to normal.
