R/C car thread!

That Subaru looks amazing PureAwesomeness  Did you use decal paper to do the logos?

I was wondering if someone could help me, basically I have an old RC car which uses a 9.6V NiCad battery pack (which is 8 wrapped AA's). It looks like this style...

ty96800.jpg

It no longer holds any charge so I went out and bought an 8 AA battery holder so that I could 'covert' the car to using standard AA's. Only problem is that all my rechargable batteries are NiMh.

Is it ok to use NiMh batteries in a car which used to use NiCad batteries? Surely they both supply 9.6V total anyway right? I have no intention of using the original RC cars charger and I have a dedicated NiMh charger.

I would really appreciate they help! Thanks,

Robin.

^ That is absolutely fine, they are both 1.2V cells.

PureAwesomeness - the car is fittingly awesome 👍

Sorry for the shameless thread bumping but my car is nearly finished and I have to say I'm pretty chuffed with the results. This is the first car I've built and I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out. Just a few finishing touches such as fitting working lights and so on left.

VERY nice... 👍 great job!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I found all of the graphics for the stickers on the internet and printed them onto transparent and white-backed label sheets on my ink jet printer. Here are a few more pics.

Unfortunately I'll have to wait a bit longer for the controller and battery. My wife is such a scrooge!

Cool, thanks Neal 👍 going to charge some up now...

Are you using a delta peak charger? I have a Technoline iCharger BC900 which is an enormous improvement over normal fast chargers and a slightly better alternative is the Maha/Powerex MH-C9000. I'm also using Sanyo Eneloop (HR-3UTGA) AA batteries which although rated at 2000mAh far out last batteries rated at close to 3000mAh.

The chargers are a bit pricey but combined with the Eneloops they stopped me giving up on rechargeables when I was about to start using normal AA's.

Nah, I'm using a GP PowerBank charger with GP 2700mAh NiMH batteries.

I've been looking into getting some Eneloops but only when all my GP's don't hold charge anymore.

Doing this from my phone, but thought people might like a laugh at my RC videos. Only added them recently...

Sorry it's not a proper link, the GTP Android App isn't all that good for posting.

Finally got my controller, ESC, servo and battery the other day. Here is the car with its lights on. Next step is to tune it for drifting.

Fantastic work on the Subaru PureAwesomeness! The decals look like they were made with them on.

RACING IN WINFIELD, IL - 2011
We will be racing again this Spring and Summer in Winfield at the Methodist Church. Dates have to be cleared with the church first. Watch this thread for further information.

The HPI E10 is awesome! I replaced the gear and tires. The grip level is amazing...

I don't own any RC cars but am officially an RC geek. Mostly I fly pod and boom CP helis though I do now and then break out the fixed wings!

I don't get out anywhere near enough these days so my skills are very limited but I have got all my upright orientations down and am working on inverted.

A couple of flight vids if you are interested:

Dusk flying with an MSH Protos:

Now and again I like to take some onboard vids, this one has an interesting view of the rotor head:

And last but not least, everyone loves a crash video!

I hope all my fellow RC freaks are well and your lipos are charged or your tank is brimmed. :)

I tried heli's about 4 years ago and all I could do was make it fly up into the air and crash back down while spinning in a circle. Just couldn't work out how to fly the thing.

Anyway I started out with a nitro car about 11 years ago. Tried racing, my first race was so bad I never went back (my car would literally summersault every corner). So I stick to bashing till the car broke and I couldn't get parts to fix it.

Few years passed and then I jumped to electric and drifting with a few mates about 4-5 years ago. Got bored of it and moved into racing which it became too expensive and pulled out. Just got back into racing this year and playing catch up at the moment. I've got x2 cars and a 3rd on the way shortly.

First is my main race car. Xray t3 2011 which I run in 21.5.

Nice new shell I'll start using soon. My current one is starting to crack but it was always going to be destroyed till I learned to drive again.

Second car is a Tamiya TRF201. Picked it up recently as a offroad basher to use with some mates who have nitro buggies (I wanted to stick to electric). It is pretty much set up for racing 2wd mod (9.5t motor) but that is just so it can keep up with nitro.

3rd car is a mini which I'll show once i build it.

I have a traxxas vxl rustler but the i already paid over 100 bucks for batteries and im going to have to buy more because i keep screwing the lipos.... i need a freaking low voltage alarm!

You should really get one. They are only a few dollars on ebay. You can even get one that is a cut off switch.

Yeah I did a lot of that, it took me nearly 80 flights before I felt comfortable tail in hovering and another 50 to get comfortable flying basic circuits. In those 130ish flights I don't know how many times I hit the ground hard!

Nice car. I have loads of questions!

What is the power system? I notice a number of belts, AWD through a belt run off a gear driven off the motor pinion? Does anyone make independant AWD systems with a motor on each axle (or each wheel)?

Is that a gyro in the front there on the foam?

What do run for radio gear? I run 2.4ghz for control but am looking into alternative spectrums to run a video RX/TX for FPV flying.

Haha. I know that feeling, check out the cano on my beater...

J-P is so right, get one with an adjustable cutoff alarm or an ESC with a low voltage cutoff built in (preferably programmable for voltage and effect - stop or ramp down).

LiPos are expensive if you make them too consumable. STick to the 80% rule and never over discharge them. A charger which shows mah put into the batteries is useful for monitoring run times then use a timer (on your TX preferably) so you stop before you hit the LVC.

I get 5 minutes of flight time from a 3s 2200mah LiPo on a 325mm bladed heli @ 3,000 rpm on the head and the same from a 6s 3000mah on a 425mm heli @ 2,600 rpm on the head. I'm curious to know what sort of run time you get on your cars?

Have a good day all.

The t3 is all time awd. Motor spins the pinion which spins the spur that has x2 belt gears on the same axle. These in turn attach to the front/rear differential. Front is a solid axle and rear is a ball diff. I need to address the front though with some different drive shafts as it generates a vibration at higher turning angles which I think is affecting steering somewhat.

In the front is a transponder. Just to keep tabs of laptimes when racing. It is more convenient/lighter than the ones you borrow at the track.

Radio gear I use a Spektrum dx3r which is just your 3ch pistol grip 2.4ghz system. Has lots of adjustment so is fairly good to use. Probably overkill for mucking around though but I figure this radio probably won't need replacing for a fair few years.

I thought about getting that shell too but I think my next project is going to be a Nissan GTR. I'm thinking of spraying it Kawasaki green.

Yeah I wanted a GTR too actually... But because I have it setup for drifting and thats what I'll be doing mostly I found this body more fitting :) Haven't thought of a color yet though... But would love to paint it that blue color found on E36 M3s... Can't remember the name of it...

An R/C thread...excellent. Do you all mind pics of early 90s Nikko/Tyco/Radioshack or are you more interested in high end cars. I ask because I'd like to post a few pics, but what I've got is 15-20 years old toys r us available merch.
