I can't help but think his death was ironic like Steve Irwin's death.
Still, I'd rather have him hit a tree than have a family being killed by one of the Jackasses film cast.

Anyone got a hold of the passengers name? He died too apparently.

Even so, stock front tires on a 911 GT3 are 235mm or approximately 9.25" wide - more than double the assumed 4" skids.

I was just guessing 4 inches based on the width compared to the painted lines. Jeez those things are bigger than I thought lol

Anyone else notice the second set of skid marks on the road there?

There are 4 (1 light one) marks there and they are narrow because the car was at an angle as it was sliding. That's what I think.

the orange dots on the skids are from the police?
Look at the 4th (far right), no rubber, ... maybe a flat tire?

My point was that most super-cars and luxury car-brands are generally as survivable at 110mph (where a 65% survival-rate would qualify as 'should survive'), just as the 'regular' passenger vehicles which get tested at 60mph, are supposed to be survivable at that 'high' end of the speed spectrum. (. . . Just as Formula 1 car drivers sustain 180mph crashes, or 168mph suspension pieces to the helmet.)

Even un-seatbelted accidents at 30mph are 70% survivable.

Perhaps Porsche should make their cars survivable in crashes up to 150mph—the GT3 is intended to be raced, which is also when wrecks happen—and with a car that light and a chassis that stiff, it shouldn't be far from achievable. If you're up to the engineering challenge of making a car go 190mph, you should also consider what happens when it loses control at that speed.

Were he not drunk, and if a deer or something had crossed the road causing him to swerve, this would be a completely different discussion.

Can you comprehend that he was breaking the speed limit and that he hit an open tree? There is nothing on most race tracks that even closely resembles the same physical structure of a tree, and a race track is the only place where these cars should be tested to the point where you have a high possibility of losing control. It seems like you're trying to blame porsche for this dimwits lack of brains. Nothing, not even a race car will stop somebody dying if they hit a naked tree at over 180kmh. That is a blunt force impact! Look at the incident that killed Peter Brock. He was in a full spec race car with massive roll cages but it didn't stop him from dying when his targa car hit a tree.

Or it didn't have much weight on it?

^ This, look at the way the car was sliding/turning. The weight would have all shifted to the left hand side, especially at that speed. The right tyres would have barely touched the ground.

My civic busted a tire at 235/240 km/h. It was a bit scary but nothing special! In a Porsche GT3 with 18 or 19 inch wheels and 235 at the front with i would say 295 at the back, no problem at all at 180km/h, and i bet those are runflat!

Your Civic can do 150mph? With what gearing again?

Those skid marks are more or less in agreement with a single MR/RR vehicle leaving the road at an angle, with some spin.

Right hand skid marks... The car was clearly travelling sideways to some extent. If it had been travelling directly forwards the marks would have been...

1) Much lighter in colour as cars with ABS brakes leave only a faint skid mark when braking at maxium pressure

2) Wider... as has been said, the GT3 has 9" front tyres and 12" rears.. the skid marks are too narrow for that.

In addition, if you compare the width of the marks compared to the track of the Police car it shows the marks are too wide to be the track of a 911.

The Orange paint is sprayed on the skid marks by the accident investigator to ensure they can still trace the cars path if it rains and the marks are washed away (though looking at them, I'd think they will be there for some time to come!).

I'm guessing that the set of skid marks on the lefthand side are from someone stopping abruptly at the sight of the accident site shortly after?

No one had tought of that till now! Its another good point!

Horde_R35, Could you please lay off the exclamation points for every statement you make? It sounds like you are shouting at everyone each time you post several per post (nearly every post, lately).

R.I.P Ryan and Unknown passenger. and the picture anyone think that he may have misjudged his speed and tried to turn off to the right?

I'm not sure what it looks like behind the view in that photo, but the road ahead is pretty straight. Really hard to lose control in a car going straight unless something failed on the car or he was turning for some reason. There is a possibility he could have tried to make the turn to the right there.

I've had a look on Google Maps, the road is straight for a good mile before this junction. The local papers are also saying it looks as if the driver was trying to make the turn.

Or he passed a car and failed to maintain it straight afterwards?
That could also explain the skidmarks on the second lane....

Ohh the speculation...

Maybe he was watching too much D1 and tried that right turn like Taniguchi?

That could be why i get misunderstood sometimes:idea:.

Then we're talking contact patch compared to full tyre width etc.etc. There's many possibilities.

Proving Grounds with Jessica Chobot right? It's quite entertaining.

Again, it's real shame to see him go, but on his part, that was just reckless.

Yeah, that's the one.
So, has there been any updates as to what happened? All I read was that someone said he might have been drinking HOURS before the accident(doesn't mean much).

errr, nevermind

The skater and stuntman had a blood alcohol level of .196 when he got behind the wheel on Monday; the legal limit in Pennsylvania is .08.

A police official also confirmed that Dunn had been driving his Porsche upward of 130 mph when he crashed and died, along with his passenger, Zachary D. Hartwell. No other substances were found in his body.

I also read he was WAY over the blood alcohol limit and way way over the speed limit.

That changed my initial reaction from 'shame, poor guy' to 'Darwin was right'. Luckily no innocent road users were caught up in his irresponsible actions.

yeah, what I meant is he may have wanted turn off to the right but was going too fast to make it and understeered off?
also read on jalopnik he was twice over the limit. I dont get how people get themselves into this situation.

DUI? If that was the case, I'm glad that he took only one another person with him. I do feel sorry for the passenger, but I think the chances good that the passenger knew the risk he/she was taking?

Don't drink & drive. If you do it, kill yourself, well, what are you gonna do? But I hate it when you hit pedestrians, kill other drivers, etc. on the way out.

media's reporting "In the 13 years before his death, Dunn, 34, was cited at least 23 times, including 10 stops for speeding and careless driving, and three more for driving with a suspended license, according to a report on Philly.com."

I loved jackass. I used to skate and be just like those guys and he was one of my favorites because he seemed like a pretty chill dude that just liked to have fun. Sucks that's he's gone and I feel for his family but man that is just ridiculous and reckless. That's a looong driving record. With the kind of money he had, just go to a track and drive fast. It's a sad shame but not at all surprising.
