Hey guys, I'm relatively new to firearms and I know nothing about them, apart from firing the trigger and going boom.

I got a Savage MKII FV-SR for my anniversary and after researching, I'm going to buy a Mueller APT 4.5-14x40 scope for it. It has a factory picatinny rail already on it, but I have no idea what scope rings to mount on it. Anyone have suggestions?

Wow. I had to google it, but what a beautiful rifle. Congrats! 👍

This is the scope? Other than that you'd want 30mm rings & ideal rise for you, I'm not sure. Personally, I'd go for detachable mount, but unless you you want backup (iron)sights installed or something, I guess there is no need for one. I'm sure you'll have good advice or two, @Michael88 ?

@a6m5 thanks. That is the scope indeed. I could only find a few results when looking for into on ring height. Someone said Weaver tactical 6 screw rings in medium. I looked it up and has a rise of .370" but I am not certainwwhat any of it means.

Mueller scopes work, but they're on the very end in terms of optics quality and adjustments.

Also don't get hung op on the large magnification, with the 22 you won't be shooting more than 100 - and with 14x magnification things get awfully shaky and with cheap lenses dark as well. Personally, I shoot with 10x magnification and thats enough to be able to see and use the previous .22 holes as target at 100yds. You'd only need more magnification if you wanted to shoot flies.

I can wholeheartedly recommend scopes from Weaver and Redfield, those run for 300-320 bucks and are really good quality for the money. Especially the tactical line from Redfields Revenege line is awesome. https://www.redfield.com/riflescopes/

Thanks but I can only go for $200 counting the rings. I don't hunt and I'll only shooting at paper or metal targets up to 150 yards on my property.

Would this help? Sorry, I'm a total noob with rifles & optics.

I ended up going with the APT scope and will buy Weaver Tactical Low rings from wal mart to see what kind of bell clearance I get. If its to low, I'll exchange them for mediums.

Also have a brick of CCI Blazer and Standard velocity on the way. Hopefully be at my dad's this weekend to try it all out. Thanks for the help guys, I'll get some pictures this weekend if I go.

Pics of that gorgeous rifle? Yes please. :D

I'm sure it'll be tons of fun with that rifle(.22LR bolt-action if I recall). If you haven't done so already, I'd lube it before taking it out for the first time. Personally, I go straight to youtube to see how others do it, but it's probably a good idea to read the manual, too. There are lot of idiots online(it's OK, I'm one myself lol).

Picked up my new duty holster today so I mounted my Surefire X300 Ultra to my Glock 35. I quite like it.

Sweet. I generally find the extended barrel on Glocks awkward, but it looks awesome with a light on it.

How do they work with holsters? Do you have to take if on & off?

Thank you.

I bought a new duty holster today that is made for the Glock 35 with this light so it will be staying on. My Genotac holster that I use to "conceal" carry off duty (you can't really conceal a 35, way too big) will no longer be able to be used though, but I plan on buying a Glock 43 with a TLR-6 to carry everyday so I'll just have Geno make me a new holster for that.

Scope came in today.. I had it propped up on the couch looking out the window at my wife's aunt's house 150 yards away. Very clear, crisp and bright picture. Should be perfect for what i do. Got the savage out and laid it on top of the rail, even flush against the rail it cleared the barrel. I guess low rings will work??.. here's some pics,
you will have to pretend it has rings on it :D

Have fun with your new rifle. An accurate scoped 22 is about the most fun you can possibly have with a firearm. I love putting empty 12 gauge shot shells, pine cones and clay pigeon shards at the 100 meter target to pick them off one by one.
Also the CCI standard velocity is one of the most accurate 22 rounds I know.

Went out and shot for about 6 consecutive hours to try out the new setup. First I ran CCI blazer that my dad had ordered about a month ago. Got the gun sighted in a few shots and was punching out the 1" diamonds from 50 yards without a single flaw. Switched over to the CCI SV and resighted. Then 4 out of the 5 rounds would fail to eject. Both the blazer and sv are coated and the sv would only eject every time if I wiped them down with a rag first. What are some steps I need to do to remedy this? I plan on cleaning the gun before shooting it next and it had around 300 shots through it before the switch to sv.

Good question, I'm not sure + I'm not at all familiar with bolt-action.

You said you had to resight the scope going from Blazer to CCI? Was it making huge difference between those two ammo, or were you just going for tight accuracy?

300 rounds sounds like a lot for bolt-action rifle. Sound like fun. :D:tup:

Blazer are high velocity rounds at around 1250 fps and the standards are about 1050 (ball park figures) but I was shooting about 1/2 inch high and to the right a bit. I was just seeing who could get the best 5 shot groups with my dad so I resighted.

It was a blast. We also have some ar500 hardened steel hanging about 75 yards away. Easy to hit with thus gun. Almost boring lol

Finally kicking off my AR15 build project that I've been wanting to do. Ordered a stripped lower receiver the other day, and will be picking it up from my local FFL in a few days. I'm pretty excited about this project. After dumping way too much money into my Mosin Nagant, it will be nice to spend money on a non-crap gun.

Looking forward to this project. 👍

I recently joined the glorious land of gun ownership with a custom built AR-15 that a friend assembled for me. Totaled about $600, and I got a bunch of free extras from said friend, along with another friend who sold all of his AR-15's for an AR-10. He just had the extra stuff laying around in his garage so he gave it to me lol...

Upper most extra stock, the flip up sights attached to the gun, along with two Magpul P-Mags came from the same friend that built the gun. The other parts came from the other friend.
Might change a few things later on, but for now it is staying as is. Don't have the extra money to buy random gun parts lol...

God, it would be so neat if this hobby start resembling your diecast & Gundam habit. Venom800tt - "hi guys, this is my new AR in .22LR, here's the one chambered in 9mm, then 300AAC Blackout, that's my old AR-10, .50 Cal is on preorder....." j/k

God, that would be neat. :P Seriously though, good looking AR, @Venom800tt Nice price, too. Welcome to the thread! :)

LOL, guns are a wee bit on the expensive side for that lol. Don't plan on getting very many after this. I'd like a shotgun of some sort, along with a handgun. Haven't decided what yet, and it will be a while before I get either of them.
Plus, that diecast model addiction needs feeding ;)

12-Gauge & a handgun. I like how you think. :D Take some pics when you go shooting next time! 👍

One of my very old screens died so I took it to the range to check the pattern of my 12 gauge double barrel.
From 5 meters or 18ft, 2 shots, 0 Buckshot (12 .33 pellets). Patterned very nicely, tight and even spread.
Only one pellet made it all the way through and the rst dented the backside badly, those old screen have a lot of metal in them and it was a very heavy one. Modern ones would get completely shredded I bet.

There are two groups on top of each other.

Well I didn't know we had a thread about guns. I have a few & enjoy punching holes in paper whenever I get a chance. I recently bought an AR-15, & that caused me to go buy an AR-10. I have been really enjoying the them both. I haven't been reloading for several years but, I will resume soon as ammo costs are kicking my tail. I have 6 different 22 rimfires, so I do have some cheap plinkers too. I have a Dept. of Conservation range just a few miles from home, with covered shooting benches. It is some what busy at the moment with everyone limbering up the deer rifles. You have to wait for some one to leave as there are only 4 or 5 benches in each shelter. The 100 yard benches had 3 or 4 people waiting around on Saturday morning when I was out there. Sometimes it's hard to get much shooting done as somebody will try to talk your ears off. Wasted 2 hours one afternoon talking wildcat rounds with a guy, he had some odd ball caliber TC Contender barrels, & of course we had to look at, & discuss each one... I believe he had over 30 different barrels for that thing...

Welcome to the thread, @N0t_L3fty I'm the other way around; I have Bushmaster .308, but I kinda am getting interested in the AR15s. Looks like fun rifles & caliber.

Shooting range I frequent are similar setup, but I arrive right when they open to avoid the crowds. By the time it starts getting busy, I'm thinking about getting ready to leave! :D

I have an old Remington 788 in .308, it is just a cartridge I have grown comfortable with. I hope to be the lucky bidder at an auction tomorrow for a 742 Woodsmaster in 30-06. I have owned 3 or 4 of them, but never held on to them. The 5.56 won't cost as much to shoot, that is a definite point in its favor. Yeah, I get out there early, but there are a bunch of us early rising old farts here in fly over country.

.30-06 sounds nice. How did you do in the auction? Do they kick any harder than the .308?

I didn't get off early enough for the auction, it had already sold by the time I got there. The 30-06 has a bit more bump than the .308, but mainly it due too heavier bullet weights. If you are shooting 150 grain bullets in both, there isn't that much difference. Most of the time you will use heavier bullets in the 30-06, 180 grain up to to 220. I use 180 grain bullets in most cases. Plenty of knock down power for anything but Bullwinkle.

The 788's are very good highly sought-after rifles among the pros, they're form an era back when Remington still took pride in their craftsmanship. Take good care of her.

Been at the range today, did some accuracy testing with my CZ452 22lr at 100 meters. All groups under 1 MOA and some under .70.
