Ruger's entry line AR is on the lowest priced side. You could also buy a Palmetto State Armory lower and upper and not spend a whole lot.

My buddy was telling me he's read people were getting mixed results with the Ruger. He recommends S&W Sport-something II.......

Got 4 80% ARs done. These are for friends. It's exhausting being such a nice person.

So lately I've been looking at buying a rifle, but I've been wondering, do you need any sort of license or permit to purchase one? From what I've been reading it seems like all they do is run a background check on you but I'd just like to know for certain before I go out and try to buy one.

Looking at a Mosin Nagant carbine, by the way. :D

In PA you'll just fill out the federal form and they'll run your info through the NICS system real quick.

All you need is your drivers license or some other form of government issued ID to prove who you are.

That's what I thought, thanks! 👍

Guess I'll have to do some shopping around now.

When my older kid left home I parted with one of my better ruger 10/22's, not so much for protection but more a right of passage. Now That my baby has left I'm thinking a bit more of protection but the only thing I'm willing to part with is a 410 with a pretty heavy choke, I guess it could shoot 4 shot yeah?(it can handle the longer shells)

Otherwise it's off to the shop for me, no pistols though, any suggestions?

I've been hankering to start my gun collection with a CZ 75 SP-01 for range and home defense (and possibly open carry).

Close to pulling the trigger.

I wonder how many times that pun has been made in this thread...

EDIT: 0!

Since it would be open carried, it would not be as bad.
Yeah I know, but there are many people (like me) who are annoyed by the mere weight and/or size of a smart phone - let a lone an all-metal full size handgun. :scared:

If I was allowed to carry a gun it would be a single stack Glock or maybe a little Walther PPK.

Yeah, the SP-01 will technically be my first gun, I have no interest in carrying right off the bat, but being allowed to open carry isn't too bad. I work in construction and am used to having a few pounds around my belt, so this will be nothing.

Ultimately, it's two planned purposes are range/target practice and home defense. I figured if I had to get just one gun, this would be the one. Long term, I might get either a snub-nosed revolver, a PPK, or a P-01 for regular carrying.

I would start with a revolver myself, a .38 not snub but maybe 6", call me crazy :D

My first pistol was a 9"1/4 barrel s&w .38 special, I liked it but quickly bought a 6" .357.

Fan of Glock, especially G19, but I'm not a fan of their trigger feel either. I saw an ad for this CZ other day & couldn't believe how cheap it was(isn't it like $400, or below?). It looks really good & from a reputable brand. Not sure what's going on there with the extension, but I hope it's mechanically sound & reliable.

@MoparGTS - Great guns you got there, but I just saw that you are from Cali. I'm so sorry. If it makes you feel any better, Anti-Gun people in Oregon are now pushing more gun laws on law-abiding people, too. God, I hate clueless legislators & their supporters. :(

CZ are great reliable guns, my dad had a CZ 75 for several years as a competition gun (thousands of rounds) and other than getting a lighter trigger there wasn't much done to the gun. Ran great, never had problems. I'd buy a CZ almost above any other brand of hand gun. Great feel and wonderful to use.

Doesn't look like it when you got that nice Corona next to your work space :sly:

I had to look it up, but that's a good looking gun mang.

If I was to open carry, boy I have no idea. Maybe 1911?(Kimber Custom Target II) Single stack grip feels awesome. Or my other handgun, USP .45? 4~5 more rounds in the magazine would be nice. Both guns are super reliable for me.

If I was to buy one, maybe Glock 19, or 23?

I think a glock is enough. The others are just too expensive and unnecessary when there are several others that will do the job just as well. I think a Sig p226 would be the most expensive carry I'd buy.

I really prefer the weight of alloy frames in my hang over plastic. I understand the merits of polymer framed pistols (and the Walther PPQ M2 is on my wish list), but for my first gun, I want a big beefy, low-kick 9 that makes me look like I know what I'm doing.

Well DA/SA pistols are still something you're going to have to get use to since that is what you seem to want. So it isn't that easy to pick up and use in succession (not incredibly hard either), in reality a revolver is always going to be the easiest go to gun.

Well, I like the SP-01 because it can be carried Cocked and Locked, so DA doesn't have to be an issue. But I'm anticipating having two different trigger pulls and don't mind the extra difficulty. You're talking to a guy who has Cherry MX Clears on his keyboard because I wanted to feel like each button press was a fight.

Just giving advice as a long time gun owner to a future one is all.
