I've never used grease on any of my rifles. Generally it's just solvents to remove any metal particles, run a borensake down them a few times, use rem wipes/rem oil on the actions, and then cover the action with Hoppes lubricating oil.

I don't like the thought of visible grease on the surface of a gun, or the residue it creates. Also, for reloading purposes, it's much easier to remove oil than grease from the cases in a tumbler to be recycled. If grease were to get onto the case before being fired, it could cause the shell to have dents and be unusable later on when it has to go through the press.

@xXKingJoshXx, in regards to 9mm options have you considered looking into Police trade-in S&W M&P (link below)? I do not know what your budget is but Cheaperthandirt.com currently has a sale on FNH FNS-9 with stainless steel slide for $399. Additionally, Palmetto State Armory has a sale on the Sig Sauer SP2022 9mm for $399 as well.

Those are a but too large for pocket carry I think.

While doing research about the Springfield M1A, I came across the debate of gun oil vs. gun grease. For those who have experience with both, can you please share your with us?

Grease can be highly problematic on/in guns, it attracts dust and powder residue and turn into black goo like no other lubricant. Also, when it gets older it tends to gum up which can lead to FTF FTE's because it blocks or slows down the action of tight guns, this also happens when its really cold. Back when I used grease in the actions of my guns some of it worked itself into the firing pin channel and slowed the firing pin down so much I got misfires despite the pin making a good big dent into the primer.
Took me a lot of time to figure that one out.

Grease has its place though, it is much more durable than oil so I use it on the non-visible parts that aren't part of the action, like the surface of the barrel that is covered by the stock and the underside of the receiver. It stays there forever, gums up which makes it even more durable, in the rust protection application its hard to beat.

Thanks for the feedback guys, another question I have for you guys is what grease did you guys use? So far from what I've found Lubriplate seems to be pretty good.

I just polished the frosted barrel of an old rifle, it looks like new again but I hope the bore diameter hasn't increased so much that it affects the precision negatively. I just put valve polish on a patch and ran it through the bore very carefully, and I allowed the rod to rotate so it followed the rifling. The result is pretty amazing, I thought the barrel was done.

I ran through 6 patches which turned completely black, I really hope thats not too much material but the next time on the range will tell me more.

I bought a Colt LE6920 with Magpul furniture.

3.5 years after initially thinking about it, with an AWB not passing and prices and inventory having mostly settled down in the meantime, I finally bought one. From talking to various gun shops, these were going quickly, and most of them were out of stock, in light of recent events, though prices didn't (haven't yet?) gone up.

There are still a ton of AR options out there, but I realized that for the first AR, I really am not going to/don't want to mess around with it much until I'm more familiar with the platform. I wanted something good out of the box at a reasonable price, that is good bang for the buck and talking to some friends in the know and doing some research, the Colt fit that criteria perfectly. I looked back at the AR advice that @Zenith dished out 3+ years ago (thanks again, man!), and it was in line with everything else I was hearing, so I sealed the deal and picked one up. I may someday down the road build one of my own, but for now, the Colt is what I need and what I want.

I'm jealous. Colt w/Magpul sounds really nice. What's the going rate for something like that? Locally, I've been seeing the entry level AR from DPMS, M&P, etc. for roughly $600. I find them interesting, but obviously, you expect Colt to be a grade better than those.

Congrats! 👍

Shot the rifle with the barrel I polished - it had no side effects, in fact it shot a little bit better than before.
Not sure if I had an especially good day, I'm simply happy it worked so well.

Conclusion: if you have an old surplus rifle with a frosted/matte bore I recommend doing some careful polishing work with valve polish.

I have been thinking of doing something similar. Though, I also just want to build one too. The only problem with that is I cannot decide on anything. I have had my eyes on Aero Precision's ambi lower, but have not been able to pull the trigger on one when they are in stock. Unfortunately, they have also had to go and complicate things further for me by adding a FDE option.

Thanks! It was a little bit under $1100 before tax. I found one place in the wider area that was $70 bucks cheaper, but they were completely out, and I would have had to drive for an hour one way to even get to that shop. They were getting a few more this week, but people have been putting deposits down, and to guarantee one, I would have to do the same. That savings wasn't worth the multiple trips and hassle to me. On the other hand, there were places that were still selling it for more than what I paid for mine.

You should do it, especially if/while they are available and still reasonably priced! I've heard good things about Aero Precision, and *shameless plug*, buying from them contributes to my local economy :P.

Still need an upper for my homemade AR. Been like this for a couple years now.

Anybody have any experience with SKSs? I went down the road to a local gun shop and was tossing around the idea of either a very nice SKS they have for $550 or a nice old Japanese Arisaka for $500.

The Arisakas aren't easy to get ammo for I've heard, although I've seen it on the Internet, otherwise I've heard they're solid rifles unless it's a late model. Was surprised with how small they were though, plus the terrible iron sites. The SKS seems like a better choice overall.

Can't Arisakas be converted to .30-06?

Good looking rifle! I wonder if they'll make that style handguard for my Bushmaster .308.
They probably do. Looks like Magpul's MOE line.
Yeah, it is MOE. I'm going to be looking into it later. :D
Well, I looked on Magpul website & they don't list any handguards at all for AR-10, which made no sense to me, because my Bushmaster MOE 308 comes with their handguard, stock. After seeing that they don't list one for AR-10, I had guessed that their AR-15 model must be compatible with the AR-10. I emailed Magpul.

Their rep got back to me right away, he said it should fit, but I may have to take little bit off inside to make that happen. I'm going to pass for now.
Anyone here like 1911s?
I have Kimber Custom Target II. I like this gun a lot. I do wish I had a newer 1911(mine's high mile), but you know.... Too many guns I want, not enough $$$.

Shoots much nicer than plastic guns with its smaller grip & metal frame.

Hmm, maybe you can try a friend's to see if it fits before you buy one? Or is there a way to measure the circumference and other dimensions on your 308 and compare it to the same dimensions on the Magpul to see if it fits?

Pretty sure the information will show up on Google sooner or later. I'll wait & see for now!

Well let's first address grease. I only apply grease to the ends of coil springs, & very sparingly.
Making parts fit, with cars a cutting torch & a welder is your friend. With guns you need tools with less impact, needle files, valve grinding compound, & a dremel tool are your friends. Careful with the dremel though...
That out of the way, picked up a used High-Point carbine in .40 S&W. Haven't had a chance to drag it to the range yet. The .45 ACP destroyed the cheap red dot I put on it with less than 30 rounds. Of course I can't find the receipt...
I will drag my old lazy tail to the range this weekend & get the .45 zeroed with a 4X scope I had laying around.
If you run across these guns used a a reasonable price, don't turn your nose up. They are a blast for the price, pistol ammo is quite a bit cheaper then rifle ammo. They are heavy enough that recoil is not an issue, & anyone can shoot them. Now to find a used one in 9mm...

So I caved in and bought that Russian SKS at a local hardware store. Got a few stripper clips and boxes of ammo as well. Anybody know how loud they are? Thinking I might try it outback in the woods once people start with the fireworks. :P

It was $550 which I know is a bit much, but it's a Russian made rifle and it's in really nice shape so I figured it'd be worth the money rather than buying a so so one and having problems like I did with my Nagant.

Doubt many people will mistake the report from that SKS for fireworks. They are wonderful brush rifles for whitetails, after you ditch the rattling cleaning rod & the bayonet. I used mine for several years, & would not have any doubts using it now for under 100 yards work. Just think of it as a 30.30 clone in a handy semi-auto package. B-square used to make a scope mount that would let you used LER pistol scope, or a red dot on one. I wouldn't push it much past 100 yards though, just not enough juice. I used 130 grain nosler ballistic tips hand loads. Poor old thing digested a lot of corrosive ammo, of course it was cheap when we imported mass quantities of it. Then some one decided we shouldn't be importing cheap ammo. Wish I hadn't burned through all that ammo...
