We should probably save the gun control/gun rights issue for the existing thread regarding the subject. :)

I'm kinda new to the hobby, as I started shooting just 2, 3 years ago. I purchased my first gun earlier this year, just a .22 Remington semi-auto rifle. Other than the minor jamming issue, I'm pretty happy with it. I hope to get a .22 pistol in the near future though. I'm interested in the Walther P22 right now, preferrably with the extended barrel like this one:

It will probably set me back $250 - $400. I might opt for revolver or something.

So far, I've shot a 12 gauge shot gun, SKSish rifle, .22 Ruger and my own rifle. If money was no object, I'd love to own a version of AR-15 like in the skylineGTR_guy's pics. 👍

wtf this is a hobby???thats odd i thought only the army had guns :dopey:
 That's what I used to think, when I was growing up in Japan. :D Now I live in the U.S., and it is a big part of the culture here.

Lol you look a bit suprised after you shoot it like awestrucked.

My dad has a few handguns and a rifle and shot them alot when we had property far from here. But my uncle sold it and I never shot the guns because I was about 2 or 3 when they sold the property.

I believe he has a .44, forget the rest of them.

But I have a few airsoft guns that I fire quite often:
  • Berreta M9
  • Some HFC handgun
  • Colt M4
  • G36C
  • MP5

These are weak guns though. All of them are spring except for my G36C but it only shoots at under 200 FPS. So some christmas I'll probably ask for an AEG auto rifle.

Even in Australia you can own Hand guns for a hobby (collecting or shooting). Most people Ive spoken to assumed handguns where banned altogether.

I grew up around guns. My old man had an old .22 cal rifle, and My Granpa had a very old 12-ga. double.

I never worked up the courage to fire the double.
But I have fired a variety of .45ACP's 1911 style pistols,
M-14 Rifles
A variety of 12-ga. "riot" guns.
An old .22 rifle, and various pellet, bb, guns.
I enjoy shooting, but don't do it nearly as often as I would like.

Video of a silenced/unsilenced P22.

If you want a P22, make sure you get one without the threaded barrel. It'll make things a lot easier on you. I had one with a threaded barrel, and it took me forever to get it back. Threaded barrels are against the law in Cali for really stupid reasons.

skylineGTR_guy, next time bring a plastic tarp or ground cover to shoot on the next time you go shooting. It prevents dust from flying in your face and guns, like in the video, and it makes brass collection a breeze.

I've got you all beat:

Mk19 40mm machine gun. It fires grenades at full-auto. Huzzah. :)

That, and a slew of other guns that aren't obtainable. Being in the Marines helps. :)

Wait, isn't a threaded barrel rifling? Or is the threaded barrel an add-on to enhance something? An unrifled gun would be plain stupid.

A friend of our Family owns probably 30 guns that him and his son in law amassed over the years, there's a few mounted on the wall at their hunting lodge, and several mounted in places at their house.

My dad's friend has a 12 ga. shotgun that is mostly carbon fiber that was used by S.W.A.T. that has a bullpup design and has a 6 round magazine. I forget the name of it, though.

Erm...how many crimes in the UK involve the use of guns?

How many people are killed or seriously injured each year in the Uk and the US by guns?

edit:

UK
Murders with firearms: 62 [20th of 32]
(per capita): 0.00102579 per 1,000 people [32nd of 32]

US
Murders with firearms: 8,259 [4th of 32]
(per capita): 0.0279271 per 1,000 people [8th of 32]

I was just pointing out the fact that guns in general dont have that great of an increase on crime. Yes ofcourse the US has more gun related crimes, but less crime in generall, the firearm crimes are incorporated into the total, and even with firearms the US had a lower crime rate overall.

I think he means threaded so you can screw on silencers, not rifling.

The funny thing is the targets are so far away, you can actually look up after you fire and see the incendiary rounds flash against the targets in the distance :)

I didn't know P22 came with or without threaded barrel. I take it the threaded one is for the extended barrel? What did you mean when you said "forever to get it back"? Lastly, why did they ban threaded barrels in California? Suppressors/silencer issue? Sorry to ask so many questions, Solid! I appreciate your advices. :)

Yeah last year we had a table for the .50 but this year we just grabbed that pad and left. It made alot of dust but after we blew them all of with an air compressor and got them all cleaned up. With the .50 picking up brass isn't that hard  We had about 15 guys show up this year, less than usual but oh well more ammo for me :D

The firts run of P22s had threaded barrels. Yes, threaded barrels are for adding a silencer or flash hider or other possible illegal device. But, the threaded barrel for the P22 was for different reasons. The entire barrel could be unscrewed out the gun, which also fell under the "threaded barrel" rule. So, back they had to go for fixed barrels.

Because silencers, flash suppresors and barrel extenders are illegal in California, they made a law that threaded barrels are illegal to own as well, never mind compensators.

Mine had a threaded barrel. Since it was illegal to own it that way, the DOJ (Deparment of Justice) informed me I had to send it back for a free repair job, or face getting arrested. So, I sent it in, and took 10 months to get it back.

Gotcha, thanks for the info! :) Did you have any jamming issue with P22? First thing that surprised me about guns were how easily they jam. Before I started shooting, I used to belive that guns jammed only if you don't clean/maintain them. .22's seems more prone to jamming, but I haven't been around guns long enough to tell for sure.......

I only sometimes get jamming on rimfire semi auto's, I never have any problems with centrefire semi auto's.

Yes, I had a little bit of problems, but it was nothing you can't expect with a new firearm. The trigger pull was harsh, the thumb safety was too stiff, and I had problems with the mag release, but again, that's to be expected until the parts wear into each other.

If you're having jamming problems, try to see if they're loading or extracting jams. Then let me know whcih one it is.

Mine's with the loading. I belive it's suppose to be a 8 - 10 round magazine, but if I load that many, it jams most of the time. When I load only about 5 rounds, it does much better.

How about .38's or 9mm's? Do you guys think they are less prone to jamming? I'm considering revolvers as a alternate choice, because I don't think it's possible to have jamming issues with those. :D They seemed to be bit cheaper than semi-automatics as well.

Sounds like a new gun problem. The magazine springs are too tight. You can loosen them up by keeping a magazine loaded for several weeks.

Yes, centerfire SA handguns don't jam as much as rimfire. Taking it to a gunsmith can help, but I would break it in by shooting it. If you want to bring it in, request a "throat and polish" which would reduce your feed jams.

Yeah I havent had any jamming problems with semiauto centrefire pistols but have had some with rimfire. Also depending on load Ive had troubles with my Dan Wesson revolver cylinder jamming up abit, but my Ruger NEVER let me down doesnt matter what was put in it.

Air guns are awesome. In Japan, air guns were replicas of real guns and I had countless models. My favorites were MP5 and extended barrel Colt Government. In the States, my favorite was a 720fps Daisy air rifle. Nice thing about air guns are that you can shoot them anywhere. :D

I have two of these guns but smaller. Alot smaller :indiff: :dopey:
