Reece's Car Thread-WTF DID I BUY NOW

SO GUYS, I have a dilemma.

I found a pretty cheap and running AE86 on Craigslist. It's $2700. My stepdad once said he could help me pay for a better car if I wanted to get something else, but the MR2 would have to leave because we wouldn't have room for it. Once, a $4000 MR2 popped up for sale and he said if I get rid of the MR2 and give him the money I get for the MR2, he would buy the nicer MR2. Though, he would have more ownership than I would have, which leads me to think he could sell it if he wanted to. Now the AE86 here would be in the same situation, salvage or sell MR2, give him money, AE86 is ours. I LOVE the AE86, but MR2s are just awesome. I want to get into drifting, and drifting an AE86 would be easier than drifting an MR2, and I can only have one project at a time.

Here is the 86.

Yes I see that it has rust spots, I don't care about that. I know how to do brakes. But I do NOT know how to take a motor out of an MR2. Though I have a friend that can take my motor out in under 2 hours.

TL;DR might be able to own an AE86, but I would need to sell the MR2 and the AE86 could be sold at any time without me being able to stop it.

EDIT: I was looking into what that knocking noise could be, and found this video. This is EXACTLY what mine sounds like.

You HAVE the MR2. You MIGHT be able to jump through some hoops and PART-own an AE86. Keep the MR2.

Well guys, I come with some news. Good news. And bad news.

Let's start with the bad.

I was thinking, I'm just not ready for a project like this. It was kind of an impulse buy. Lots of little things just put me off. If I have to swap the motor, I can't just pull it out. I've talked to friends about it, and they say the same. And I really can't find any parts for the car that I could afford. It was a tough choice, but it had to be done. In the future, I'll buy a nicer MR2. In about two years probably, I'll have enough saved up to buy an MR2 that isn't a moneypit. I feel really horrible for abandoning a project... but I felt it needed to be done.

Now, the good news. This guy wants to trade.

I absolutely love the 7M. I know the gasket problems, and it seems like this car may have one, but that's not too hard to do. Plus I like that it's FR, better weight distribution for drifting if I choose to drift (which I probably will). Another advantage, 4 seats. I can't cram friends in an MR2 and go have fun. With this I can. Yes I know it has the transmission problem, but that car screams Manual Swap. Maintenance would be easier too, more room. I want this car.

So... there's my update.

 Not the vacuum, leak definitely rod knock. Well look at it this way, if you would have gotten it off on some other person they would have been on top of you so fast. You can still possibly get $300-$500 for the shell. If you still plan on selling it.

My stepdad is actually pretty interested in it still. I'll probably sell it to him.

And in other news, the search for a car IS OOOONNNNN.

If you want a high HP Supra MKIII look for a turbo. My brother in law dumped 3k into the GE and only got 230 out of it. That being said it had a massive power band and a ton of torque. Coupled with a close geared trans and LSD, that car loved being sideways. Lots of fun, just lacking the straight line speed of newer cars.

Budget? And will you refrain from putting Initial D stickers on it?

If so, I'd also suggest a 3 Series. I've found them easier to work compared to Japanese cars as well, and especially compared to MR2s.

Can I at least put one on the dash?

Budget would be 900-1000. So the only 3 Series I could really buy would be an E30. I'd prefer a Japanese car but I like the E30 a lot. I'll keep it in mind.

In other words, you need a 1990 era Honda or Toyota that runs and doesn't scream PROJECT CAR. Something to put gas in, change the oil on, and drive to work and/or school.

Stay away from the 3 series. You'll blow more than your budget just on initial repairs especially at this price point.

Just do what everyone else does and buy a miata. Not as fun but parts are more readily available.

You have a point. I have been kinda straying away from stuff that needs tons of work. Though I don't necessarily need a daily driver. Though I hear you.

I have heard the 3 Series can get expensive. I really do want a Miata but I can't find any in my price range that aren't total heaps.

Well, I have found a car I am REALLY interested in. 1985 RX7 for $500. Needs only a starter and a battery. Needs some body work though, but that's not really too much of a problem for me at the moment.

You aren't going to find an E30 worth buying at that price. You'd honestly have better luck with an E36 since E30's have inflated in value a bit, but still not for that money.

Realistically, you basically are going to need a base model Toyota or such just to act an reliable transport till you have a bit more cash to swing. By a bit more, I mean $3000 to $4000 or so, thus getting you something that won't require its price in repairs immediately.

Well if its a stick you could just ask them if you could pop the clutch and see it run,

They're one step ahead of you. The engine is in pieces in the hatch. Included with the car, though.

I like those FBs, Thatman.

Well, news. I was thinking, if I wait a little bit, I will have nearly $2500 for a car. A little bit is like, until January. So I will probably wait.

Well they are within your budget, but remember some people with sporty cars will sell at a much lower price so they don’t have to store them and then hike up the price int he spring.

Drove this today.

Miata by 〄 Reece M, on Flickr

Holy yes, this was an amazing car. So nippy and torquey, and it cornered like it was on rails. I was taking hairpins at 40mph with half a turn of the steering wheel. The gearbox was awesome, short throw and I could feel everything functioning, and the weighted shift knob made it feel smooth and easy. What a great car, definitely at the top of my want list.

It was a 1.8, and it actually had a decent amount of low-end torque.

I've driven both, and the 1.8 was used in a few other cars as well, such as my friend's Escort for auto-x. It is comparatively torquey compared to the 4A-GE, but still not something I'd call "torquey" :P My M3 would feel like a torque monster in comparison ;)

Still, a fun car for sure.
