Repeated Unsuccessful Hosting

I keep getting selected as host. Never are more than three other players added. The races are virtually never successful. 9 of 10 times, or less, Mine is the only car that moves and I must wait for the other players to be disconnected. Then player matching often selects me again to host. Today it happened 5 times in a row.

The only broadband service I can get where I live is wireless with a maximum upload speed of 512k upload speed.

Why, why, why cannot the system identify repeat unsuccessful hosts and stop selecting them to host ???

yea it is annoying!

while i dont have your problem, and my hosting is always usually successful, i still find it annoying when it chooses bad hosts.

and sometimes people from the other side of the world complain that its laggy when im hosting.... well sorry but its not like we have a choice!

I know of another person (opelgt1969) with the exact same issue except he will host a full room and it dumps as soon as the race starts. SCEA has no remedy for this.

I had this too a few months back.

My PS3's Internet connection used to be super-quick and now I've moved home, it is on a slow 1/2 Megabit connection. A few months ago, for a couple of days, at least 10 times in succession each day, I was made host and the same thing happened - the race started and everyone dropped.

I guess eventually the game realised my Internet connection was now rubbish and I wasn't a suitable host! I haven't had to host ever since.

Have you changed Internet connection with that PS3? I would say keep playing and eventually it should resolve itself.

Do you have port forwarding or a DMZ set up on your router for the PS3? This would show up as NAT type 1 or 2 when you do XMB > Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Test. If you do, turn the port forwarding or DMZ off and it might stop thinking of you as a good host. You might need to turn off UPnP too, or it'll do port forwarding automagically. I don't know how this would affect other games, but you'll still be able to make outgoing connections (and get data back from them) so I expect you should still be able to play.

Here's the line of bull I got from SECA:
Note none of this helped
I have edited out my home address/phone#/etc

In addition, if you have not already done so, perform the following recommendations which may also
correct the problem.

- Restore Default Settings

From the XMB(TM) menu, go to [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Restore Default Settings]. Once you
select Restore Default Settings, you will see a list of settings that will be restored. Scroll
through them and press the X button to restore the settings. After the operation is complete, you
will see the initial setup screen that appeared the first time you turned on the PLAYSTATION(R)3
computer entertainment system. You will need to go through the initial setup process before you can
use the PLAYSTATION 3.

- Install the Latest Firmware Update

To check what version of the System Software is currently installed on your PLAYSTATION 3, from the
XMB menu go to [Settings] > [System Settings] > [System Information]. The system will display the
System Software version number. You can visit the following link to determine whether you have the
latest version installed.

- Check your Environment

Make sure to allow adequate ventilation to flow from the PLAYSTATION 3's vents (i.e., avoid
obstructing the vents with long/shaggy carpet, inadequate airflow from cramped entertainment cabinet
setups, etc.). Make sure to also keep the PLAYSTATION 3 away from excessive dust, smoke, steam,
extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight. Full details on Safety Precautions and Use and
Handling can be found in the PLAYSTATION 3 Instruction Manual.

Message from Consumer:
I'm havig trouble with online gaming with GT5P. What the problem is is when I go online and go to
joinig a race I'm picked as the "Host" as soon as the cars enter turn one on the track all the cars
get disconnected except myself. I've been using Teamspeak and the other drivers are getting booted
from the races.I think I read that the host is picked by te player with the best connection if this
is true then why does the gamekeep picking me as the host. Is it possible to correct this problem as
to keep from gettng a bad rep as a online player that keeps disconnecting?

I did as you suggested and then "joined" six races in a row. Today I'm back to the same problem. Half the time I am picked to host.

DMZ not enabled
UPNP not enabled

For some reason I now remain NAT2. A while back I was NAT3 and changed it by putting the PS3 into the DMZ.

I ask again:

Why cannot the site identify players who host unsucessful races and stop picking them to host? They do have a computer don't they?

I have a reasonable connection here with approx 2.5mb download speed and 650kb upload speed. This provides for a reasonably good experience although I experience about the same degree of lag as other players. Under normal circumstances I rarely host a race and when I do it is usually only for small fields of 2 to 5 players.
On Monday, my connection was slowed to 64kb up and down as we had exceeded our download limit (again :dunce:). Since then I am being chosen as host far more than usual. At Daytona Road last night I hosted about half of the races I entered. The biggest field had 9 starters and while there was evidence of lag at the start the overall race experience seemed to be acceptable.
This causes me to wonder whether either of the following two factors are in play:
* because my connection dynamics have changed significantly, the server deliberately selects me as host to 'test' my suitability as a host in the long term;
* in some form of logic I can't fathom, the server actually chooses the worst connection as host so that if that players connection is insufficient the race will terminate quickly or alternatively the connection is set to the lowest common denominator.
I am also intrigued by the fact that races did for the most part complete satisfactorily even though my bandwidth is running at less than 64kb up and down. I appreciate that the connection technology is quite complicated but I don't quite understand why the game can still run satisfactorily with such low bandwidth. Perhaps it's requirements are not as great as we think?
