One thing that some people don't realize is that many people won't take a tuned car seriously unless the original car was really worth tuning to that degree.

Why put $10,000 into a Civic to get performance equal to a Dodge SRT-4 (0-60 in 5.6 seconds) when the SRT-4 only costs about $2000 more than the Civic, and get the benefits of better reliability that come with an unmodified car?

Why put $30,000 into a $35,000 Nissan 35Z to achieve the performance of a $50,000 Corvette Z06?

Why put $100,000 into a $25,000 Miata when you can get a $75,000 Dodge Viper SRT-10 (500 hp, 0-60 in 3.8) that will still blow the now-$125,000 Miata's doors off?

Hell, why spend $750,000 on a Ferrari F40 when the same $75,000 Viper SRT-10 (Viper: 0-60 in 3.8; Ferrari: 0-60 in 4.1) will outrun it?

But some mods make sense...

Why buy a $120,000 Porsche 911 GT2 when you can put $10,000 into a $50,000 Corvette Z06 and smoke it?

Why spend $1,000,000 (one f$!%ing million dollars!) on a McLaren F1 when you can bore, stroke, and supercharge a $75,000 Viper for about $50,000?

Why buy a $45,000 Audi S4 when a $20,000 Dodge SRT-4 will outrun it even with NO MODS AT ALL?

The definition of "rice" should also include modifications that are not worth the money at all (If I stuck one of those giant NOS bottles and some racing tires into a Corvette Z06, I could probably do eight seconds in the quarter mile instead of 10, and I'd pay less than $80,000 for the whole thing. Maybe those F&F guys should reconsider their choice of cars.

A lot of good points... Nonetheless. Here in Denmark we have a race series call DTC. (Danish Touringcar Championship), and these cars are ALL based on the cars you can buy on the street. But they are FRIGGIN' fast round the tiny twisty circuits we have here in DK... I'll bet you 100 to 1 that they're faster that ANY big bore US car like the Viper GTS or the Mustang watts'it'called'with'the'lard'4ss'rear'spoiler.. Modded or not.. It's all about agility ;)

Dragracing is another matter though :D

I meant actually ending up in the back of the squad car, as in CRASH!!!...

Not from what I have seen (PVO Dodge Viper GTS-R Competition coupe ;) )...

err no. no one will spend 750k on an f40. they cost about £180k now which is about $280k. whats more, buy a skyline for $60k, spend $15k on mods and have a 1000hp machine that will smoke anything and everything. but its not just about straight line speed. otherwise there would be no need for a suspension let alone a good one. im sure the mclaren f1 could smack a bored viper round a twisty track. though if million dollar cars were such a bargain ricers would be saving up for them right? :D

its all about money, you buy what you can afford, and whatever your circumstances are at that time. im sure if you gave a ricer $100k they wouldn't go out and buy a civic and put $90k of mods in there but buy an M5 and maybe lower it and put some nice rims on....

well thats what i'd do anyway ;P

You said it Nightmage82, Not everybody can afford 100 grand & up for a car. So they make what they have the best (in their opinion) it can be. More power to them!!
That's what "HOT RODDING" is all about!! It's not WHAT you have it's WHAT YOU DO WITH IT!!! You don't necessarily have to have an OLD car to "Hot Rod" it, you just have to fix it up ( preferably YOURSELF) to where you believe it's at it's best. IMO

Just to point out that I base a cars performance on how it handles, not how much it cost. You are right, its not exactly what you have, its what you did with it. There was this guy in the SPEED Channel, he has this Ford Focus. Under the hood he has a Ford Big block engine and made the car rear wheel drive ;). What a sleeper car as it looks like just another rice boy ...

If so, I think it was a 5.0 . They did a test on it for either Horsepower TV or Hot Rod TV also. It sure does'nt sound like a typical "ricer", I HATE those friggin' tin can "bumblbees"!! Duals with headers and BORLA XR-1s on it.....BLAATTTT!!!!

I like this guy. he knows.
OK, here is an example of what he is talkin about. hot rod magazine published a 57 Mercury Wagon about a year ago. the dude crammed a 460 CI ford big block under the hood, but came up with a very unusual setup for a big block: twin turbos. smacked from junkyard turbo thunderbirds, the thing made 365 hp... yeah, nothing to say wow. the torque numbers, however... heh... 714 lb/ft @ 3500rpm. just munch that for a while. 714 lbft @ 3500rpm. now. instantaneous. stab the pedal and you are 5 meters away in one milisecond.
how much would it cost to build a twin turboed 460 engine with 714 lbft?? yeah, lotsa money. would you believe 3000 dollars??
well, believe it. the dude has 3000 dollars under his hood. and he is pulling two turbos and 714 lb/ft @ 3500rpm.
as Turbo2 said, its NOT the money. its how you use your HEAD.

Cano

of course, there is no head into putting these stupid body kit and all the aforementioned add-ons... hell, there isnt even head in getting a turbo and bolting it to yer exhaust manifold unless you know how to tune it well to suit your needs. if you dont, you are just WASTING some 35% or the device's capabilities.

sure but if somehow you managed to make your stock civic a machine good for 270mph then you couldn't keep the outside stock, you'd need to put wings on and lower it and stuff. besides all the usefulness it warns people you are driving a dangerous machine and they should get out of your way! heh, but seriously though u'd need some of that stuff just to hold your car down.

Now THAT'S a REAL HOT ROD!!! A modern engine in an old school car , the engine won't break if you beat it and the body won't crinkle like tin foil if you "accidentally" bump something you shouldn't have!
By the way...Thanks for the vote of confidance Cano, it's nice to know someone appreciates this stuff like I do!
Knowledge is Power, and we all need as much as we can get, right?
