Review: Takata 86 Rally Car
- Prolouge -
What happens, when the Subaru and Toyota team up to create a "driver's car", a car that the small man can buy for a reletively small price and offers the most amount of fun. Well, they come up with the FT86, or the GT86 as it's now called. This car has probably caught the biggest attention amongst car enthusiast and journalists all over the world.
And now, in 2012, almost 3 Years after the first Concept was revealed, it seems almost surreal that this car really is finished and went eventually into production. The expectations were very high indeed, because the Hot Hatch's like Golf GTI or Renault Clio RS have set the benchmark very, very high indeed. But the GT86, could live up to the expectations and surprised with absolutly nimble cornering and drift capability.
Since Subaru (relativly successful) and Toyota were participating in Rallying, it definetly comes to mind, if the GT86 could also be as good on Gravel as on tarmac.
I therefore tried out the Takata 86 Rally Car. The car got completly rebuilt by RKM's own VTiRoj.
- First Impression -
After the first few corners at Eiger Nordwand K - Track, I definetly feel the difference between my Rallytune and Roj's Rallytune. I tried to keep the charactaristics of the street car, to give this car a very neutral feel, that the car is very stable at high Speeds, but also aggresive when you want it to. Roj definetly went for the opposite. The car has a very FR Rallycar Feel, very Old School indeed. It slides at every possible corner, but that doesn't mean that you have to saw at your steering wheel like crazy to keep this thing in a straight line. Another thing I definetly noted positively is, that the car copes the bumps and jumps very, very well. The car doesn't like High Speed (downhill) corners too much, but Hairpins even more. Overall a good feel.
- Deeper Look -
I am definetly quite surprised on how good the car behaves on Gravel. FR Cars definetly are lenient to modern 4x4 Cars. You feel that not only with WRC Spec Cars, but also in Subaru's Street Cars. But this car and especially the tune, because that is what makes this car so quick around Eiger, atomise a kind of confidence. A confidence, that makes you go faster than you actually would dare to. You can drive this car almost eased over the course without having too much problems with Oversteer or Understeer as this is probably the more lethal thing at rallying.
In comparison to my 18HP weaker 86 RS, which is also equipped with a Short 6 - Speed instead of the Fully Custom. Tranny, this car isn't really faster in the turns. It's definetly much more fun than my counterpart tune. The car, probably because of the Diff Settings, gives you the possibility to wag the tail out like crazy to circle the car around every hairpin corner. Combinations are definetly another strength of the car. But, and that is actually quite a pity, the car doesn't like high speed corners. Especially at the downhill part you have to brake earlier to not hit the barrier, this will not only costs you the speed at the fastest point (RKM Takata: 187kp/h/GT86 RS: 194 kp/h) but also precious seconds at the end of the lap. I would definetly recommend to raise either the camber value or the stiffen the Anti - Rolls.
I was quite surprised on how good the car offests the jumps, bumps and compressions. The car stays very stable the whole time to give you the guts to brake later and to stay longer on the Throttle.
At the end, I clocked a 3'55:438 as my quickest lap. In comparison to my RS - Tune this equals a 1.6 Seconds faster lap time.
- Résumé -
I would lie to claim that I expected either good or bad from this tune. With 240HP this car doesn't seem too powerful, but let's not forget that this car only weighs about 1.1 Tons, and it's RWD. That's usually a receipe, that let's you tumble into utter misery, but it doesn't! The Boys at RKM, especially Roj, did a great job in creating a fun and quick Rally Car with FR Layout. The car drives surprisingly controlable through turns and simply is a joy to drive through Hair Pins and Mid-Speed Corners. The car has a relativly high speed on this loose surface, even though this will cause the car to understeer heavily at corners. The impartial behaviour in Jumps and especially after jumps is tremendous and rounds up a overall very, very good (beginners) rally car. Well Done, Roj!
