RKM Motorsport - Tuned Tuners - May '13

Amazing! The Lancer GSR was the most recent buy for me, but I'll have to de-tune it a bit. I'll post a review soon. I'll try out the Coffee Car as well, lookin' for a good Cappucino tune.

You guys are great with your tunes...the menu is cool to look through your cars and clever tune names. i'm going to use you guys from now on =D

I believe this is my very first post on GTPlanet although I have been lurking for some time. But I feel compelled to comment on the NSX 3rd tune. There's a lot of praise of this tune - but I hope RKM don't mind another one :) Sorry I'm not a good reviewer of tunes and my driving skills aren't much better. I'm a casual gamer with DS3. Cheers,

NSX 3rd:
The NSX is my favourite car. Personally I prefer the the classic NA1 styling but that only has 5 gears and power is slightly lower (though weighs lighter) than the NA2. I hold up my hand and say I have been duping the NSX purely to collect them even though they are in virtual state. So I have a collection of SuperGTs, NSX90, NSX91, NSX91 RM, NSX93, NSX95, NSX97, NSX99, NSX01, NSX97S, NSX97SZero, NSX99S, NSX99SZero, NSX01S, NSX92R, NSX97Coupe, NSX Concept, NSX Road, NSX Race, to go with my Kyoshos. Did I mention I like NSX? :)

So when I found than a tuning house had developed a NSX into its 3rd generation I just had to buy another NSX to try it out.

Test Circuit: Supercar Festival - Nurburgring. For my test circuit I used Racing softs.

Review
The top speed is not monster speed of the Europeans and US breeds. The engine upgrade is stage1 only. But this car was not designed for grinding Indy. I think overall the speed is balanced in that there's plenty of speed and torque through the corners. I can't emphasis this enough. In some situations where I feel I've overshoot the corner, I slip to a lower gear, and power my way out of trouble. Stay off the grass and I usually pull it off. Amazing.

This has been mentioned before that you have to go easy coming out of corners in 2nd gear otherwise you WILL spin. There's a healthy dose of oversteer (not overkill like the NSX S Zero...) so if you're braking late or overshoot going in to the corner, you have a window to recover with the oversteer. Hit the brakes and turn. Also because of the sudden oversteer in 2nd, you need to adjust your braking to braking late when entering the sharp corners, as opposed to other cars in your garage. This is probably due in some part with the DS3. So go easy with this baby. Practise and you'll know the optimal turning arc with the breaking.

The gears are spaced out nicely, the 1st gear is there to gently nudge you over the first tight right-hand corner, and the sharp chicane towards the end of the lap with all those PD white boxes. The higher gears are spaced more than enough for this test track.

This NSX 3rd is a very smooth ride and should be driven like a lady. Treat her nice and its an absolute JOY. For the first time I am really enjoying GT5 as with this tune I can almost FEEL the car: as she enters each corner, each straight, when she starts to buckle or squirrel. I think the term here is feedback, there's a lot of feedback and response in this car.

RKM have made a great tribute to the NSX: it is the easiest handling supercar ever developed for the casual driver. You're not fighting over a beast. And you don't have to drive a beast to be competitive. This tune is a perfect introduction for casual drivers to racing sports cars, without being overwhelmed by erratic handling of the speed monsters.

The slight cons to this tune on my usual test track is: I have to look out for the McLaren F1 to make this race competitive! And that's from a very casual driver.

Thumbs up! 👍👍👍

Just tried out the SLS AMG tune for a bit. Without a wing though. It does change the car, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still fun and handles well. Albeit not so well, but I don't mind. Racing Softs replace downforce, in a way. Great job. 👍

What SLS AMG? O.o

Thanks for the review! I think the NSX 3rd Anniversary is our most praised tune, but it doesn't mean we dont appreciate more praise. :D There's really not much to add here, you've pretty much nailed the key features of our NSX very nicely. 👍 That 2nd gear oversteer is still something I want to improve on. I don't want to remove it completely because as you say, it helps sometimes when you need to rotate the car after overshooting a corner, so supressing it enough so it doesn't intrude on normal driving yet still comes in handy would be perfect. :)

If you want to make races more challenging, switch it back to sports soft tyres, although you'll still win quite easily.

Oh and welcome to :gtplanet:!

You mean the C63 right? Neither of us have done an SLS yet.

So, time to announce winners of the GT Premium contest...

kingmoshoeshoe2 and axle! PMing Jordan now, expect the Premo soonish.
Congratulations you two!

Well done to everyone else who entered! :D:tup:
Oops, meant C63 AMG. :indiff:

Oh, and I was somewhat surprised to learn an older generation Lancer was on the Premium side. I will buy and test soon, it's a really good car. I wish the 22B was premium...

Thought so. :P I like how the kit for the EvoIV makes it look somewhat like a V. It makes me less upset that there's no premium V. 22B premium would be sweet.

The R34 settings have been updated a bit, so I also changed my track beast's settings. Is it just me or was I able to notice better the understeer this car has with sports tires. But when changing to slicks, 90-95% of the understeer vanished. It's a challenge with sports tires, really, you must be easy on the brakes or it will just plow forward and kiss the wall.

Are the gear ratios responsible for this or what?

And Rotary Junkie, sorry for being taking too long to send the R35, got caught up with school requirements :nervous:

I've used a few of your tunes and they work very well for me, keep up the good work...Also really like how your "index" on the first page is setup, it's really easy to navigate compared to others.

I'm currently revising the R34's suspension. I'll take a look at the gear ratios too. 👍

Thanks! :D:tup:

Edit: Revised settings for R34 Black Edition up. I've managed to kill most of the stubborn understeer and adjusted the final gear ratio a bit.

Edit 2: Changed the NSX LM Road Car banners. It looks better in purple. :D

RKM Motorsport’s Emperor IV

I've been wanting a Evo IV tune from you guys and here it is. At first, I was like " Seriously Roj, what a piece of..." but that was mostly because I have been driving a lot of FR and MR cars lately and no 4WD. After getting used to the tune, it feels great. Like Roj says in the description, it really feels like a WRC car in tarmac which is awesome. I can throw it around a corner and feel save with it. Understeer is still present but it's a 4WD which has a natural tendency to understeer. Still, I love the tune and my Evo IV is my daily car in GT5 now ( just like Yuka with her Civic Type R xD ). So, thank you Roj and RKM Motorsport for giving us these amazing tunes. :sly:

P.S. - Is the Sledgehammer tune compatible with the MK4 Supra ( JZA80 ) ?

I don't blame you, even I sometimes wonder what on earth I was doing with that Evo. Just have to remember it's an Evo with AYC equipped so you have to drive it differently to a Skyline or Impreza. 👍 Glad you liked it!

To answer your question: It'll work quite well, but it wont be as good as a tune built for the MK4 specifically.

Hi guys, I'm new to gtplanet, however I am a Gran Turismo veteran, since GT1 on Playstation.

I was browsing the forum for a set up for my EK Civic Type R and came across your page.

I tried out your VTi-R tune and I was literally blown away at how planted the car became with your tune. It was faster, but corners were even more fun to fly through.

Picking on cars twice it's size was great, and the car now has a voracious appetite for corners, corners, and more corners, LOL.

Next I read up on the NSX-R tune and with past experience in this platform, it was a natural selection as my next car.

I've always revered the NSX as the handling car to dish out driving experiences unlike any other, and your tune just took the car to the stratosphere of performance.

I tried out the settings and took the car online, where I came in first on my very few online races. A testament to the work put into this car. Although I am having a bit of an issue with oversteer online, but that's most likely due to the physics change.

A great, fun car that never fails to impress and surprise.

Then I went and decided to see if the Mustang Mach 1 could be made to put up a fight with today's modern machinery.

Much to my surprise, your Mach 1 tune transforms the car into a grip beast. It's still a mustang at the end of the day, meaning you have to get a feel for the car, but once you do, the car surprises in ways I wasn't expecting.

I took it out for run on the Historic Car Cup and got second place only due to driver error on the last lap.

As I kept browsing your tunes, I saw my holy grail.

You guys tuned an MKIII Toyota Supra Turbo. That was my first car in my teens and I still have it to this day, an 88 5 Speed NA.
My second Supra was a 90 Turbo, Targa Top, black, auto.

Once I saw your Sledgehammer, I knew I had to give you guys props.

I went and immediately bought one new from the dealership.

So far mine has minor bolt ons, with the exception of the suspension, transmission, and LSD upgrades.

Wow, this is how my car should've been in real life, LOL.

So fun to drive, it's planted, and fast. It's refreshing to see my first car get some modern technological love.

In closing, thank you guys at RKM Motorsport, from now I will come to you guys for tunes.

I hope my reviews are to up par, as i do have a request for a tune. Just PM me and we'll get in contact.

Thanks for the reviews! Cars online do seem to oversteer more, I've noticed the NSX gets a bit tail happy compared to offline driving.

I can give you 1 request credit since the reviews are pretty small, but you did 4 of them with pretty pictures so I'm taking it as 1 big review. :)

Some quick reviews of the RKM Motorsport tunes

About the Driver: Been racing in GT since the first incarnation, and done more laps than I care to remember. Until recently, I've been using the driving aids to help counter-act the on/off reaction of the throttle on a standard controller. However, feeling like a newb online has made me rethink my strategy, and now I'm weaning myself off the aids. I consider myself decently fast, but definitely not at "alien" quality.

NOTE: Driving as recommended, with all but ABS=1 turned off, except with an automatic tranny. Driving only 5 laps in the car, so these reviews show more of a first impression. I tend to not take shortcuts unless pushed there by the AI :)

My runs were taken in the Trial Mountain race in the Expert-Polyphony Cup.

Mazda RX-7 R400
Fresh out of the Dealer: 284 HP, 1270 kg, 462 PP, Sports Hard Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:44.261
Thoughts: Has just enough power to either slide the back end out when powering out of a corner, or push the front end wide. Too bad it coudn't decide which. The car also responds very poorly to a rear quarterpanel nudge from an Audi S3.

Parts added, no settings changes: 385 HP, 1051 kg, 527 PP, Sports Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:35.216
Thoughts: The car is more consistant with the added parts. The back end will kick out if too aggressive on the gas, and I found myself being overly cautious through corners to keep those rear tires in line.

Parts added, RKM Tune: 385 HP, 1051 kg, 527 PP, Sports Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:35.166
Thoughts: Much more comfortable to drive, and much more stable, but not much improvement in lap time. Why? Because the driver got a little overconfident with such a nice driving car and was constantly trying to push through corners faster than he really should have, finishing with no laps I would consider "good". With a little practice in the car, I have no doubt I could shave a lot more time off my laps, and improve on my close 2nd place finish.

NSX-R 3rd Anniversary
Fresh out of the Dealer: 282 HP, 1270 kg, 464 PP, Sports Hard Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:43.461
Thoughts: Speed? Check! Looks? Check! Sound? Check! Traction? Um... three out of four ain't bad. Like many MR cars, seemed to want to spin if you did anything wrong... like breathe too hard. I've been spoiled by aids on cars like this.

Parts added, no settings changes: 401 HP, 1051 kg, 537 PP, Sports Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:35.492
Thoughts: Faster, but still with massive sliding / spinning issues. I think my best lap was the only one that was remotely close to a clean lap out of the 5.

Parts added, RKM Tune: 401 HP, 1051 kg, 539 PP, Sports Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:33.836
Thoughts: This was a totally different car. Still had some wheel spin issues powering out of 2nd gear corners, but they were very controllable. It was very easy to be consistant through the course, my only ugly lap being the first one (I think the AI drivers were jealous of my new machine) before I left all the AI cars behind.

Ford Mustang Mach R
Fresh out of the Dealer: 293 HP, 1615 kg, 449 PP, Comfort Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:49.939
Thoughts: Out of the dealership, this 'stang drives like a cheetah... a very, very old cheetah that's 75 pounds overweight, and maybe has a broken hip. Takes forever to stop, even longer to go, a tranny limited top speed of under 110, and a serious need for the bat-grappling hook to help it through corners. There's something very wrong here.

Parts added, no settings changes: 638 HP, 1438 kg, 582 PP, Sport Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:42.619
Thoughts: OK, leaving stock settings is all well and good for testing and comparison, but the short tranny killed this race. The only places on the mountain that weren't covered with rubber and smoke were the straights, taken almost entirely at red line. My constant power-sliding may have been good enough to win Daisy's heart and the annual Hazzard County rally; too bad this is Gran Turismo, and I came in last.

Parts added, RKM Tune: 639 HP, 1438 kg, 585 PP, Sport Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:35.950
Thoughts: Still spins a LOT coming out of 2nd gear turns, which are unfortunately the majority of the turns at the Mountain. Much improved, though, and easier to control, enough to win the race by a few seconds. I wonder if this car wouldn't be much improved by going either more weight reduction, or less HP, as that 639 HP seems to overpower the available grip of the sport softs. I may swap to Race Hards with this setup for future driving.

Civic VTi-R
Fresh out of the Dealer: 171 HP, 1050 kg, 385 PP, Comfort Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:54.666
Thoughts: As expected, I got eaten alive on this race. The car handles pretty well as-is, but has no speed to talk about. It was a pretty boring Sunday drive through the Mountain.

Parts added, no settings changes: 275 HP, 888 kg, 463 PP, Sports Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:39.908
Thoughts: As long as you drive it like a FF (watch out for red front tires), this car handles pretty well. I'm not sure what needs fixing on this car, but let's see...

Parts added, RKM Tune: 276 HP, 888 kg, 463 PP, Sports Soft Tires
Best Lap Time: 1:39.134
Thoughts: I don't know how to describe what just happened. The car felt the same, still a FF, a little different accelration due to the tranny, and the same painful, nails-on a chalkboard drone (if angry wasps had nails), but I was taking almost every corner 5-10 MpH faster. Of course, that threw off a couple of my lines, especially since it was faster without feeling faster.

Edit: More reviews later, you guys have done some great work, and I gotta try 'em all :) Hopefully I can find an Atenza in the UCD.
Double Edit: And there's the Atenza in my next UCD update, in the right color, even... You guys are GOOD!

Sounds about accurate. I need to rebuild it as mine has been fully weight reduced now... Which turned out to be a terrible idea, the balance went to pot. Then I'll set the gearing more properly and probably do a bit of fixin' on the suspension.

*snip*

Interesting. You were closest to our set times with the Mach 1 and NSX-R (though about 4.5s off Roj with the NSX, about 3 off with the Mach 1)... Well, the Civic I think only managed a 1:36 or so... Anyway, great to hear they all work well for you. Shoot for a 1:35 in the Atenza then return to these though, I'd like to see what you'd do with a bit more seat time with the track. ;)

Kyle, just wanted to let you know that I finished that review I've been working on for your Ferrari F430 Scuderia. I hope you enjoy it!

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Tune Review

Thanks for the great tune!

Replied. 👍 Not entirely surprised by the results, although a bit disappointed that I didn't completely kick Paulie's arse... Ah well, I can still tease him with the TCC Subaru results :dopey:

The NSX is one of those cars that you can spend ages with and still find a way to shave 0.1 seconds off your laptimes. It's got bags of potential and the tune lets you get closer to the limit of that potential without turning it into an axe murderer. :)👍

Yeah I cant explain that. It's like I've increased the grip without changing the behaviour of the car.
Did I read previously that you'll have a Ferrari 599 tune at some point?
Maybe RJ mentioned a 599, don't know if he's tuning one though.

Oh yeah, I just remembered, 1 review = 1 tune! Do I just say it here or PM it to you?

Also, a quick note about your Cappuccino tune, I don't find it quite as good as the one Vengeance Tuning did. I compared the two on Tsukuba (online free run physics), and yours was harder to drive without the aids for me...

Up to you. Probably better to PM though. 👍

Was my Cappuccino more understeery or oversteery? I've never really tuned a Kei-car before so I don't know what it should be doing. I'll sort it out. 👍
