Here's my review for... wait, what? Did I make another silly intro for a review? Anyway...
We all know that the original Devil Z was an S30. Sadly, it has faded away though. But what was left was its ever-wandering soul. A few years later, it has consumed another Z - this time it came while the duo were working on their project Z34. Since they have noticed after a few runs that it gave flashbacks of the previous Devil Z, they decided to call it...
The Midnight Z.
As said, this car was possessed by the Devil Z, so it got into a few crashes. That explains why Roj was a bit reluctant to lend me the car to test out. I was able to convince him though that everything will be fine, even if the weather forecast has told that it would rain on Route 7. So he sent the car with extra rain tires just to make things safe.
Before heading to Route 7, I made sure that the rain tires were the ones installed on the car. Guess the Sport Softs are still there, so I changed all 4 all by myself. Quite a pain in the ass to be a one-man team.
Anyway, I cruised along the highway until I'm on Route 7. From 120 km/h, I can feel the power surging. Then it rises and rises, to 230, 250, 270... Acceleration so far never ends. It gets slower by a bit at 310, but now is not the time to find it's top speed yet. There's that exit ramp going to the left. I slowed down to 220 km/h, so far so good. If I'm a bit slower there, I would have slipped a bit though, and start a drifting maneuver like a hoon. Then there's the hairpin to another entrance ramp back to Route 7. I was foolish enough to floor the throttle all the way, so I spun out. The car stalled. I was able to get it running again though. The car has insane wheelspin at the early gears, but that's usually expected from high-powered cars like these though. No big fuss. The car keeps spraying and spraying water until I reach 3rd gear. Then there's this hairpin that leads to the entrance ramp back to Route 7. I decided to be careful and just do 1/8 throttle around that corner.
Back to Route 7 I go, and the power surges in again. It can hold all the speed until 200 mph. It hits the rev limiter, and the surge stops. But that's just the 1st tunnel though, I can go faster in the 2nd one. Into the U-turn I go to stay in Route 7. I braked hard. Not much grip is available because of the wet road. The car barely misses the wall, although the small impact didn't make such a big dent. At the corner exit, the usual wheelspin follows.
The power surges yet again. Into the tunnel I go. I can't go perfectly straight because of the toe and camber settings. The car maxes out at 325 km/h. It could have done 330 if there was no rain. I got high expectations for a 340+, but it turns out that it didn't.
Exiting the tunnel, I braked yet again. There was enough grip to attack that kink at over 270. I just screwed it up. Good thing I didn't spin out and do a deadly crash. Just a minor side collision with the wall.
On the next day, I did a few repairs to the body to remove the dent. I just realized that this car wasn't purely a Wangan runner. Roj also tuned this car to do well in the corners. So during the night, I went to Route 5 instead. The rain already went away yesterday, so I slapped the sports softs back. No traffic, no rain, no gangbanging Hashiriyas waiting to kill me, no problem.
Surprisingly, the sports softs gave me a feeling of invincibility. Which means, this Z would be tamed pretty easily, even thought the tires aren't race slicks. Maybe because the tires are soft ones, not the hard? I attacked the first corner without problem at all. There's always skidding, but it's predictable. On the corner right after the tunnel, the car still grips. Even at the hairpin right after, the car still grips. The wheelspin is still there, but it's predictable, yet again. Same applies to the rest of the corners. The car always grips. Wheelspin's mostly on 2nd gear or 3rd gear.
At the sharp hairpin with that brick surface, it went through without any problem at all. It drifts even wonderfully on the next sequence of corners. Also at the chicane, the car slides beautifully. I just spun out because I didn't countersteer properly. The car slides too on the last corner's exit. Back to the main straight, this car maxed out at 270 km/h. Pretty decent for this track, I think.
The Midnight Z is a good car overall. It grips pretty well. There's always oversteer on corner exit, but with good countersteering, everything gets sorted out into one magnificent smokeshow. But what bothers me a lot is that it doesn't drive much like the original Devil Z. It's a bit too tame. I blame the tires. They're too grippy.
I got the solution though. Just swap the softs for the hards. Well, THAT is the real test if you are worthy of driving a car like the Midnight Z. I tried, but I failed.
