They do a lap of the GP circuit, the final turn is divided with cones, you stay on the inside of the cones going onto the GP straight to start a flying lap.

I’ve seen that in the BMW qualifying video, but I note that he finishes his lap on the GP circuit, so where exactly is the timing line? I’m guessing that going right at the cones at the end of the lap is the pit-lane entry.

The timing line is on the main GP start finish straight, lap starts and ends there.

Thats how qualifying would work, one lap gp circuit to warm up then the full lap of the nordschleife and gp circuit together, the race would be the same minus the lap of the GP circuit (only for the formation lap they would do this). So the full Nordschleife GP circuit would be the GP circuit and nordschleife together. Just as it is for the 24 hour race.

F1 could race on the Nordschleife, however I’m sad to say it will probably never happen.

I have to say I'm not sad at all. If they did, the need to meet modern safety standards would butcher the circuit. The Flugplatz would probably be flattened, the Karussell would be changed from the recognisable feature it is to an "anywhere in the world" hairpin - just like La Source - and so on. Fences would be put up everywhere, chunks of the forest would be gotten rid of to make way for grandstands, etc.
