For the LeMons race, think an old Datsun Z would be appropriate, painted in GT Academy colors. ;)

"We" run a honda civic(1990). GREAT LeMons car ! 👍

Very "cheap" and still fun to drive - although a 240Z would be more fun, they are more expensive which doesn't make it "as fun" when taking into account the cost.

dude... May 14th is a bit close and my wife's birthday.
If you guys are really serious I'm in; I've wanted to do LeMons for years and this actually sounds like a fun way to stick a jab into the ribs of GT-Academy and I know the jalops will get a giggle out of it.

Here's the event list: http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/events.aspx

Going to take some planning and discussion before just jumping in one.
Like where to build the car etc... Locations of team members vs tracks vs car build, who's a good mechanic (i'm not afraid of wrenches and all-night labor, am good mechanically and can follow direction, but I have **** for know-how and experience), and most importantly what's the most fun track. Not something we should really jump into half-cocked.

With 4 or 5 drivers though the financial burden should be minimal and the fun maximal. 👍

Ok fine, we I will withdraw the request temporarily haha

The main reason I picked the Reno one is it is fairly close to Vegas, which would make it more appealing to people traveling from far away to make the event.

You can always pull the honda badges and throw on some nissan ones :sly:
Also some black and white paint should do the trick for academy logos :)

So ziptie you have a group in Oregon that does it?

Umm, Reno is in northern NV, Vegas is in southern NV, pretty far IIRC.

Either way, it'll be good practice for me since I'm planning to drive for another team for the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in December.

haha... yeah for $500. I hope everyone is prepared to slog around a sentra, pulsar, or 200sx. Finding an s13 or z car for that price point is going to take a while.

haha... that would actually be kinda funny to dress a honda as a nissan and add another jab that everything in gran turismo is really a honda.

Part of the Oregon Region SCCA turn worker "team." The group consists of turn workers from the Sports Car Club of America. In part paid for by driver's from the Oregon Region - which was VERY cool of them. 👍

T-Hill is AWESOME ! What a fun track, I got to ride in a Viper around it the first - then in a NSX. My R1 was "more than intimidating" around there with all the elevation change, but a GREAT track for sure !!

I just thought of something. I have a '94 Sentra SE-R for sale right now for $1k if you want to use that. Engine runs great, just needs someone to figure out why it's eating clutches every 6 months or so.

Those SE-R's handle great, who cares about every 6 months, we just need it to last 24 hours.

I want to be driving the final hours of the competition, that way towards the finish I can cut the entire track in half by driving over the hill in the grass repping John Deere to the fullest!

How about we alter the GT academy livery so its in john deere green with "grass trimming" academy on the windshield vinyl rather than gran-turismo?

If not, we might actually consider pursuing sponsorship from nissan/scea they might go for it just because of the publicity in the racing community.

No sponsors allowed, its a poor mans competition.

What's the ballpark of what it costs to safety prep the car?

I'd imagine 6 months of daily putzing around from A to B is probably way better for the car than going balls to the wall for 24 hours straight. I am not sure however how hard these cars get driven during lemons though as I know little to nothing about the actual race itself.

I don't really have that figure as a group of race car driver's paid for the car and prep. Roll cages can easily cost $500(for a very basic) - I'd guess a ball park of the "safey prep" to be around $1k

This is a great idea guys,

If anyone is interested, I know that Sim legend Christian Syzmczak did a simliar Lemons event with SickSideways, a team run by Skip Barber instructors, including Juan Pablo Montoya protege and F3 Euro Series driver Jonatan Jorge.

they fielded 2 cars and finished 1-2 in a 24 hours race during the 2011 New Years.

I don't think they are all that expensive (compared to tryn to do this from scratch on your own) and the team is solid enough to win races.

I spoke with the team principal briefly and he said we could run 2 cars at any Lemons/Chump Car event, and paint them whatever color we want provided enough drivers were interested. I'm down if we can get enough drivers to keep the cost down.

the seems like the least painful, most possible way of making this happen and getting us all together.

Anyway, I asked him to keep a list of GT Academy drivers that were interested and told him most of us were interested in Thunderhill (though we can do it anywhere we decide)

if your interested, call or write and let them know, and tell them you are w/the GT Academy so they can build a list of drivers and make sure this is possible to do.
maybe one car can be GT Academy and the other GT Planet

Glenn, you might be racing cars professionally soon lol so who knows if you will be a part of this!

So these guys are for hire to get everything ready for the event? Is it really necessary to use them?

lol, I hope so GT-Motion, but I'd like to do this too with everyone! Would be fun!

ummm, yeah they would prepare everything including signing everyone up for the event etc.. as far as I know.

Prob not completely necessary, it would be cool to build our own car, but its gonna take a huge commitment from one of us to get the car and do all the work needed to get the car ready (unfortunetly we can't all help work on it). If we can do it that way though then great! But it'll just be much harder to make happen is all.

It should be worth getting on the list, see how many drivers we can get and maybe we can keep the cost down? If it looks like its not going to work out then we'll continue on with our own car hopefully.

I don't know really? how many drivers do we have interested in the lemons stuff?

+1
