Got myself some plans, a bit of wood, some paint and some tools and away we went. I hope to be able to fit a proper seat and a bit of a more elaborate base to raise it a little, but so far its doing the job for me. A few more well placed decals would not go astray either. Was running GTR on my PC the other night, and using the cockpit sure adds a bit to the racing experience.

I'd probably get a pro to paint it next time as i didn't really use enough primer and the paint could have been better. But hey, its a place to plant my arse while i race :sly:

Looks good - Wish I had room for one of those things !...

The good thing about painting wood - You can use more or less anything as primer - all primer does on wood is fill the surface of the wood - So basically, anything (don't use lead based paint ok ;) ) will do.. I painted a pair of sub cabinets a good many years ago - They were primed with 2 layers of the same paint my uncle used to paint his trucks with, then 3 layers of black (also truck paint), then 3 layers of clear coat... They came out nice :-)

Have you got a copy of the plans that you could put up here? A few mods would be required to fit my mammoth sized bottie, *some text removed by gOoSeTeR* and 4-way stereo with 12" sub WOULD need to be added, but apart from that, it looks good

On second thoughts, I might just remove the comment all together, dunno if it is against the AUP, but better safe than sorry

Cheers for the kind words guys.

I can't take credit for the design. I searched the web for ages trying to find some plans so i could make something up. I looked at the good metal frames with full race seats, but my budget does not quite stretch that far (no matter how much i'd love one of them suckers). Then i came across this local aussie site - http://www.racebasecockpit.com/

The racebase has three versions (i've got version II). The price for the pre built ones are ridiculous. Way too expensive for MDF wood and i can't see anyone wanting to pay that sort of dough. So i got the plans (which were steep enough) and went and sourced the board and spray paint myself. Luckily my bro in law is reasonably handy and between the two of us we had it constructed lazily over a weekend. Having built one, i'd change a few things next time (minor design stuff and a better painting effort). The plans you get are just big plain sheets of paper with detailed cut outs and stuff that you trace onto the MDF and then cut out with a router. The screws are all top quality and the way you cross bolt everything really makes it a sturdy peice of kit (i was a bit worried early on about how tuff it would be). Everything is adjustable too. Pre drilled holes are everywhere, and i can adjust my backrest, steering holder position, and pedal position. The leg rest moves in and out for those long and short of stature. It obviously sits you in an F1 style position that is not everyones cup of tea, but i like it. And i'm looking into having a couple of big bits of lightweight timber that i can simply slide under the base to boost its height and make it more of an upright driving style. Thats if i can get off my lazy butt.

I'd reckon anyone with a bit of nouse could easily draw up plans similar to this (with some personal touches) and make up their own MDF (12mm and 16mm) cockpit. :sly:

If i ever do fit a proper seat (or at the very least something comfy) and get the decals and base sorted i'll post some more pics.

Looks good 👍

- paint it red, hire some reindeers and you've got yourself some useful extra Xmas cash ;)
