Yes, I had the focus on the front bumper of the Escudo when attempting it. I think you may be onto something with it being out of "the zone". With this specific scape I wanted to capture the suns rays too but it may not be possible!

Have you tried shuffling it back a little? You can keep the camera placement as is but shuffle the car back until the "zone" isn't exceeded in the shutter time.
