The F355 Challenge Car

Welcome to the second season of the Ferrari Challenge series featuring the 1995 Ferrari F355 Challenge. The F355 was built by Ferrari Between May of 1994 and 1999. It was an evolution of it's predecessor, the F348. One major difference between the V8 engine in the 348 and that in the F355, apart from the displacement increase from 3.4 to 3.5 L, is that the F355 features a 5-valve per-cylinder head that is considerably more powerful, producing 380 PS (279 kW; 375 hp). Ferrari employed the Bosch Motronic M5.2 electronic injection with a single spark plug per cylinder and a dry-sump oil lubrication system. The frame is a steel monocoque with tubular steel rear sub-frame with front and rear suspensions using independent, unequal-length wishbones, coil springs over gas-filled telescopic shock absorbers and anti-roll bars.

In 1995 Ferrari introduced a race ready F355 Challenge model for use specifically in the Ferrari Challenge racing series. The Ferrari F355 Challenge model is created by starting with a standard Ferrari F355 Berlinetta model and modifying it with a $30,000 factory-to-dealer supplied kit. The kit requires 110 hours to install, and includes the following components/modifications:

* Competition clutch
* Competition steering wheel
* Lightweight exhaust
* Rollcage
* Racing seats
* Safety harnesses
* Fire extinguisher
* Engine cutoff switch
* Carbon fiber rear wing
* Upgraded 14" Brembo brakes
* 18" Speedline wheels
* Pirelli racing slicks
* Solid suspension bushings and competition springs
* Rear brake cooling ducts
* Challenge black rear grille

The F355 Challenge shares the same engine performance and physical dimension specifications as the original. 108 were produced, all with the 6-speed transmission.

THE EVENT
Those familiar with Supercar Challenge and have taken part in the 348 Challenge series understand this game's features and play system have a good idea of what to expect. As a reminder to those returning and as a note to those new to the event GTPlanet's OLR Rules apply. Please click here to read them in their entirety. Some of the rules listed do not apply specifically to this game. But most of them should be simple common sense.

I will first open a PSN Text Chat room under my PSN ID: jjaisli approximately 5~10 minutes before the event starts and will first send invites to those on my buddy list who are on-line and have expressed an interest in joining this series. You must first join the text chat to take part in the race. If anybody new would like to join, provided there's space in the lobby (16 players or less), you're more than welcome. Just send me a PSN message and I'll send you an invite in return. However, considering the points will carry over from one event to the next, I would like to encourage those who want to join this series to try and show up for every race. Once everybody is securely in the text chat room, I will open a private lobby in Supercar Challenge and then send invites to those already in the next chat window.

Additional Details:

- I encourage everybody who wants to take part to carefully read THIS THREAD and take appropriate steps before the event. I'm really bothered by the fact that there are connectivity issues with this game. And while I feel very badly for those so afflicted, it's also an imposition to the others in the lobby. If for some reason you are consistently kicked out of the lobby, I will try to send a few duplicate invites. But if after a few brief tries you are unable to stay connected to the lobby, I will offer my apologies and start the event.

- I was quite surprised and pleased by the amount of restraint I saw in most of the 348 Challenge events I've been hosting. Pile ups at tricky first corners are sometimes inevitable and they happen from time to time in real races too. But these are ALL endurance races. Even the sprint races will run for 20 minutes or more. So let's take it easy and try for minimal contact. I'm not against hard racing but using somebody as a brake or bumper stop is not allowed. Let's have clean racing! Remember once again, GTPlanet's OLR rules apply.

- I encourage the use of headsets, although to be realistic, we know headsets don't work very well when more than 4-5 people are using them at the same time. And if we really have a large lobby, I will ask everybody to turn off their headsets completely once the race gets started as it will save bandwidth. Once back in the lobby, feel free to use the mics again.

I will post additional details in this thread as the date gets closer so please keep checking back...

Is there anything in particular you have to do to sign up for this series or can you just join.? Either way count me in, i'm not the fastest guy out there but I do enjoy close, clean and fair racing and playing this game.👍

Ah great. I do prefer the 355c to the 348c.

Me too,but following the humour from the other guys,I know you are shy when it comes to your racing skills, his that statement just ment to scare us:dopey::lol:;)

Hi Tommi,

I've never had an official sign-up for these events and you're free to come and go at will. I'm often worried that we're going to have an overflowing lobby and people will be shut out but usually a handful of people who express interest in joining can't make it and there are a few open spots. If there aren't (it's only happened once), I give precedence to those who have taken part in previous events.

The only rule I have is 'clean' racing. So you're welcome to join in.

Generally these events run at 20:00 GMT. There's another 348 Challenge event coming up on May 23rd if you're interested.

Oh ok, thanks very much!.:)
I shouldn't have a problem participating in every race of this series as long as there is space of course.👍

I might be able to make the 348 race on the 23rd, it just depends if I have any plans.

Did you consider teams, team points and team liveries (!) to the series? Yes, this is a livery addicted talking... Just for fun of course, not serious 1st driver, 2nd driver stuff.

1) Teams: Hmm, I hadn't really considered it but I don't think so. Considering these races will take place during the summer when many people are on holiday, it's inevitable that at least one person won't be able to show up for at least one of the events in the series. And I think the concept of teams is a very open one that would force me to rethink some rules about assistance, blocking, buffering, etc, that I'd rather just not get into. It's not a bad idea and it certainly has merit. But as it is, I already feel too much like Mosely, Eccelstone & Whiting, combined.

2) Liveries: This idea really has merit. I don't think I'd want to combined livery points and race points. But maybe we can do a separate poll for best livery. Let me think about that one. I like it.

I think he meant the cars from the same team using the same costum livery. :sly:

I do agree also with your opinion regarding point 1. Although an appealing idea, I think it would potentially raise more issues than benefits or enjoyment experience.

I should be receiving my copy of SCC in the mail today. I have stumbled on this forum being a GT player, an I'm really excited at this concept of "clean" racing with a dedicated set of people. This sounds like a very well set up series an i cant wait to compete. I have been fishing thru the treads an picking up peoples PSN IDs hoping to add people to start racing with. I will defiantly be putting in a lot of track time first before i try racing with such dedicated people, but hopefully id like to participate in the 355 series in June.

Great to have you on board Michael. And it's really amazing to see so many new people picking up this game just in the last few days.

I've now updated the original post with all rules and tracks for this series. I believe the rules and guidelines for the 348 Challenge events have worked well and I see no need to change them.

This time, the 355 Challenge series heads to Europe and these will now be true endurance races, especially the finale at Spa where the feature race will likely go for about 52 minutes, give or take. And even the 'shortest' of the sprint races will be close to 20 minutes. It should make for some great racing that rewards both speed and consistency. Even if the game allowed for longer races, I consider this about the limit of what you could realistically do without pit stops, possibly for tires and almost certainly for fuel. So I'm happy with the scope and duration.

The only decision I haven't finalized is whether to allow ABS. After some research, I learned that the F355 Challenge cars had ABS enabled and I was considering allowing a few ticks of ABS, at least during the wet sprint races in keeping with the 'spirit' of the real Ferrari Challenge events. I usually do not drive with assists and was unsure this was really the way to go. At this point I'm leaning to sticking with my policy of 'no assists' but will do a few tests this week to decide.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

If you allow some ABS ticks, wil we all be forced to implement them or it will be free-of-choice? If the latest, I think we should stick up to NO ABS as usual so everybody will be at the same level of assists.

Naturally it's up to Jeff Moslecclesting, but I agree with Bullie. Especially if it happens to be, that it's possible to drive faster with couple of ABS ticks. Dunno if it's so in SCC but if it is, it would bother me a bit that I would need to use ABS to be faster as I like to drive all assists off.

:lol::lol:👍

Just a quick note, I had to change the date of event no. 2 to SATURDAY, July 3rd.

Looking forward to this series!👍
I think I'm finally ready to go up against you guys....:nervous:
Well at least I hope so:indiff:

I won't be able to make round 2, due to me being in the Hamptons from Friday to Monday but I should be able to make the rest of them.

Well at least I hope so:indiff:

I won't be able to make round 2, due to me being in the Hamptons from Friday to Monday but I should be able to make the rest of them.

So, I have a few comments to make here...:sly:

1. I raced with you ONE single night, about 2 months ago, not long after you purchased this game and you were well and truly on the pace even back then. :ill: Why you were worried, I'm not sure and I'm certain you would have done well, had you taken part in the 348 series. The whole fun of a larger lobby and a qualifying grid order is that there will almost certainly be somebody else who runs you close, no matter what your pace may be.

2. If you've been pounding away in TT, looking for a spot in the Alien club, you'll have to get in line and knock. ;) We have our two resident dugs, ready to go. And although it looks like part-time visitor MHailwood is selling his PS3, AlanG will be joining us and I'm sure Vompatti will have a new slim console in two weeks. So I think the podium has already been spoken for. I've already resigned myself to the idea that a 3rd place spot in the 355 series is not bloody likely. :lol:

3. And finally, not to embarrass you, but as a serious question, several times when I've been opening the lobby for these events and sending invites, I've seen you on-line and even playing SCC and I've sent you a few PSN messages, asking if you'd like to take part. To date, I don't think you've ever responded to one of them. Have you even been getting my messages? Or do you have a different PSN ID that you use?
