Seriously, what's with the gloves?

Yo peeps...

Been watching alot of drift vids lately and so many people wear gloves while drifting............................................... WHY?

I mean, it's a game and its really not that sore to hold a wheel while racing for hours is it?

I dunno, it looks funny to me, I'd just like to hear your guys reasons or opinions on it?

Really? is the wheel that bad? I never had any problems with my DFP in the past, suppose I'll have to try when I get my GT soon... but I never had grip problems on the wheel...

That's crazy . I've never heard of anyone doing that before. I have no problem with grip when using my G27. Probably gloves would make me worse. :P

I think people only where them for drifting with a 900' wheel. It helps with when the wheel is spinning on its own and sliding through your hands. I can imagine that doing Tha for a couple hours a day several days a week would kind of rough on the hands. I don't think people wear them to get more grip on the wheel, but rather to allow the wheel to slip though your hand with less irritation.

1. It gives grip, depending on the wheel you have. Alcantara or suede leather with gloves give a great grip
2. Alcantara or suede wheels become glossy if you don't use gloves and let the wheel slide alot in your hands.
3. It protects your skin if you play alot, you might get horn skin.

Same reasons like in RL, I don't get why it's weird in any way.

I play A LOT of GT5. I have been in drift sessions of easily 3 hours+ with my DFGT and have never had issues without wearing gloves, and see no reason why I ever would, it's just so unnecessary.

I watched much of the GTP 24 hour race from Ring Bandit's live stream, and they used gloves, but that's only because there were running 2 hour stints in a Ford GT round the nurburgring.

My hands get super sweaty when I use my wheel, so gloves would actually be a good idea!

Main reason, IRL, is fire protection... Same as why they wear overalls... ;) I could race a car for hours (and I do on track days) without gloves...

But I guess its personal preference in the end, I'm not knocking them for wearing them, just saying it looks odd in my opinion... Playing a game with gloves... ;)

It's all relative if you ask me, my hand skin is pretty lizard-like thanks to auto bodywork, so I have no need for gloves; but in all honesty I'd probably wear them for the ambience alone :sly:

Talking about looking odd, I get more stares from people just due to the fact that I play GT5 W/ a wheel setup...apparently amongst the Socom and Madden infused masses, the fact that i have a DFGT clamped to a work bench and a video rocker makes me this "hardcore gamer" :dopey:

I didn't say that these are the main reasons, they ae just the same like in RL.
ofcourse it's mainly personal preference in gaming but people who hate on others who use them are ignorants...
My own reasons are the great grip and feel and the fact that I want to protect the suede elather, it's not too cheap yo

Maybe they are trying to match the driving gloves you can see in the game...?

Just joking, if the gloves you wearing have grips on the inside then you have better grip on the wheel. But personally I avoid wearing gloves while drifting because I can "feel" the wheel better.

You have more Grip on the wheel.

True. Also gives more comfort when playing for extended periods of time.

Good points Mega and Gauz... :) I just really find it funny, hehehe... but I don't hate on them at all... ;)

It's cool that you have this point of view but...

Isn't this whole gaming scene funny? Other people laugh about that we are playing a racing game and it feels realistic to us :P
The personal point of view plays a big role aswell

I wear gloves because the DFGT and my DFP before it are rubber wheels. My hands sweat and then the rubber makes my hands black. That's the main reason. Its also more comfortable and gives better feel IMO.

I think ir depends on the driver's hands, mine are really...REALLY.. soft hands and i mustly dont have any problems with it. my grip on the wheel only changes after i washed my hand where i guess i lost grip since my hands are still a little bit wet.

All depends on what wheel you have and how long you play the game for.

I don't wear gloves, but when I used to drift for at least 3 hours I could definitely feel a difference when holding the wheel cause my hands sweat so much :P

OK, I got another curve ball...

So if you playing for long your hands sweat and it's not so good, but surely someone posting a vid isn't playing for looooong stints? hmmmm

:P

Depends on how long they've been practicing their drifting on that track before they shot the video.

For example, if I was making a video of me drifting on a certain track and you're trying to put most of your concentration into getting the best lines around the track, it's going to wear you out and make you sweat.

I guess if I had gloves, I'd probably put them on as soon as I noticed that I'm sweating in my hands.
So it sorta depends on how long you've been on GT5 before you shot the video and how long you've been playing for.

But then again, wearing gloves is personal preference IMO.

I wear gloves during the summer mainly, due to sweaty hands like some others lol. I don't use "driving" gloves but rather base ball gloves. I find the material slides nicer on the wheel (nice for drifting) and keeps your hands cool and dry. The ones I have are made of the same stuff used in "thermals", used in sports.

Bluntified

I use a pair of mechanix utility. They're thinner than originals. Unfortunately, mine are about worn out and I can't find them anymore.

Why does it matter if other people like to wear gloves? Immaturity

It doesn't at all, I was merely trying to find out why... And there's nothing immature about my posts is there? I simply stated my opinion without slating anyone else for theirs, that's pretty mature if you ask me... ;)

I don't get what you're getting at with this one. Why wouldn't someone post a vid after a looooong stint?

I thinks it's completely plausible that someone would practice something for several hours, and then record a vid when they are confident they can cleanly perform whatever it is they were practicing.

Or someone could be playing for a few hours, then a friend logs on, and the two decide to record a vid of some sort.

There's an endless amount of reason why someone would play for a long time before recording a video.
