My wife ranted about this when she first heard they were going after the death penalty despite him offering to plead guilty in exchange for life in prison. Her take on it was that you were not likely to get the death penalty anyway (because it's not easy) and that all this was going to do was to waste millions of dollars in courts and years of legal battles and accomplish nothing. Meanwhile he ends up in the news periodically and we could just be done with it if we took him up on his offer.

Her take on it was that the death penalty served its purpose - to get him to offer to plead guilty for life in prison without the trouble of a trial. And the prosecution stupidly ignored that and went after the higher profile sentence.

Looks like she hit the nail on the head.
