Smoking

I'll bet you would know, considering cigarettes in New York City are nearing $8 a pack.

Canada also does this really high tax thing because they have to compesenate for their nationwide healthcare, and discourage smokers at the same time. Since Canada is also on the brink of legalizing marijuana also, anyone can also assume it'll be taxed hideously.

The state of Maine also faces an issue with taxes and such, and how they do it is raising cigarette prices and perscription drugs. The perscription drugs thing is such and issue around here that seinor citizens that have perscriptions that aren't covered by their insurance (Most likely medicaid/medicare.) They all have to crowd on a greyhound bus and go to St. Stephen, New Brunswick. Which is about a 3 hour and 45 minute drive from where I live.

About that price. I think they should raise it, though. $8 is way too cheap.

That's exactly what it should be like.

I should hope not -- if they do, everyone who smokes marijuana in the US will want to go to Canada, and they will end up getting all of the tax revenue.

Sorry to hear that. That is unfortunate. What Maine should do is double cigarette prices and lower prescription drug prices.

The higest cigarette prices are around $4.82, which is damn high. So it would bring the price to around the average of NYC's cost per pack, and more. But I do smoke, so I would be against it. Maine also pays too much in taxes for everything. Propetry tax is a serious issue, and the thing that boggles my mind is that our state goverment still can't manage our tax revenue all that well either. We throw it on useless crap. And they they just think of other absurd taxes just to chap our asses.

Cigerettes are really pricey here in Michigan, that's why I quit smoking pretty much. It was cheaper to quit it all together. I was spending about a 100 bucks a month (not a huge smoker mind you) but that started to add up.

Now I just smoke a cigar with my buddies every once in a while.

Quite possibly the most UNPROFOUND thing I've ever heard.

My mom smokes, it drives me nuts. I can't stand cigarettes. In Ontario cartons of cigarettes range in price from about $50-$70 depending on who you buy from, but in Yukon and NWT etc. they can get pretty damn expensive - up to almost $120 in Yk.

Smoking is cool ... and you all know it ... you just refuse to accept it ...

Smoking is NOT cool. It is an unhealthy habit, and I think all cigarettes should be taxed heavily. If I'm paying 28% tax on my capital gains, why can't smokers pay the same thing if not more? At least when I'm investing I'm helping companies (and subsequently the workers). Someone smoking next to me will only cause my health to deteriorate.

I can see it two ways- let them pay cash heavily to kill you, or let them pay next to nothing to kill themselves. I'm not sure which one I prefer more. And welcome back Brian (wherever you dissapeared to for the past couple days). I think Jmac is kidding, btw.

On a related note, we were taking curtains down and realised how stained the walls had become from my mom smoking (10 years of buildup in the same general area = wow). I wonder if anyone out there truly believes smoking is good...

I say: "Make them pay cash heavily to kill you." The money, more specifically the tax revenue, goes to help fund government "entitlements" and other projects that are helpful for the community.

Thank you! :) It's good to be back.

I should hope so.

I think everyone knows smoking is bad -- but everyone who smokes has their own [twisted] reasons for doing so. :yuck: :ill:

Meh, I think my mom and gramma smoke because they just can't be arsed into trying to quit. I know my grandmother won't stop (do you close the barn door after the cows have escaped?), but I think my mom could. And where were you?

They should do everything in their power to quit. Also, I was playing GT4 and doing homework -- that's why I haevn't been on lately.
My posts-per-day has dropped considerably. :sly:

[offtopic] You mean from Mega-postwhore down to Kilo-postwhore? :P [/offtopic]

Yah, I really hate the habbit- and I'm proud to say I've never smoked one in my life.

No, from mega-postwhore to "nano-postwhore". :sly:

Excellent. Neither have I. 👍

There is so much one can do with their money if they quit smoking. For 5 packs of cigarettes you can easily buy a few shares of stock in a company and (if you're lucky) watch your money grow. :sly:

omg...lol.

Oh, you haven't cut down that much. Your' 20ppd would have to be 0.002ppd...but I don't think that possible, at least for another 3 years anyway. But yah, I've told my mom time and time again how much money she'd save and shes just like "Yah...I know..."

Never seems to get through.

When you show up one day [soon hopefully] in your brand new Ferrari (or any exotic car of choice), all you have to do is say this:

"You see. If only you'd have quit smoking years ago. Just look at what you could have been driving!" :sly:

💡 Only then will it probably "get through". 💡

:sly: :D

PS
Yah, maybe the Ferrari would eliminate those 20 minute parking jobs of hers.

20 minutes to park? :odd:
That's not natural -- unless you live in New York City. :sly:

EDIT: Perhaps smoking is taking up too much of her concentration while driving?

lol, i don't think so. She just sucks at driving, sometimes I'm literally fearfull at how inept she is at parking. It's like shes not aware that cars can turn. And I make her smoke outside of the car, one so i don't have to smell it, and 2 so we can actually get rid of it some day.

Open a brokerage account, and buy a few shares of stock with your cigarette money. :sly:

Seriously, this is what I would do if I smoked and wanted to quit:

Rather than quit cold turkey, simply reduce the amount of cigarettes smoked per day. For example, if you're used to smoking 12 per day (for 1 week), reduce to 10 (for week 2), then 8 (for week 3), then 6 (for week 4) and so on until you don't need anymore cigarettes.

Whatever you do, DO NOT USE nicotine-laden supplements such as Nicorette gum etc. Chew Winterfresh everytime you feel the need to smoke a cigarette and avoid second-hand smoke at all costs.

That's the best advice I can give to a smoker who wants to quit. Also, I'm glad to hear you've made that decision. I strongly suggest that you avoid the cold turkey method as you will invariably go through withdrawal symptoms.

philip morris is one of the strong performers in my portfolio, must be the cheese they are selling :dopey:
and regarding the method of quitting, well i have to say you just game one more reason to smoke. and thank's for the advice.

NO!!! For heaven's sake don't do that!!! The idea is to wean you off of smoking, not scare you back into it!!!

and thank's for the advice.

You're welcome, but please do your best to try to quit. It's dangerous not only to you, but to those around you. The only reason why I mentioned withdrawal symptoms is because I wanted you to be prepared in case you decided to quit altogether. My solution reduces/eliminates withdrawal symptoms. If you stop cold turkey, then you'll start to have problems.

PS
My grandma just had her 3rd stroke, and possibly her last. Cigarettes are evil.

I'm very sorry to hear that Greg. I hope this will be a lesson for others to learn from. Cigarette smoking is the root of all evil. :ill:

i wont have anything christian to say about this but give my honest opinion

smoking is pointless..it is a waste of money, waste of health, and just plain disgusting...do you like kissing someone who just smoked? (if you do, you are a very strange individual)

not to mention 2nd hand smoking...even if a small amount, people have died from 2nd hand smoking...they never smoked

also, pratical reasons...if you smoke in your house or car, it lowers the value of those items...stop smoking and save money and your health and the health of those around you

Well, I can't say I read the whole thread, just the last 25 posts or so, but....nothing like a bunch of non-smokers discussing this topic to create a biased discussion.

What happened to smoker's rights? You say 2nd hand smoke is so bad, but you can legally sit in traffic right next to a diesel truck? If indeed the smokers milling about outside of buildings and in public places is so annoying, why not give us a place to do it that is both comfortable for us and seperate from the non-smokers (such as an indoor smoking room/break room)?

Don't give me the bull**** that it is bad for my body. It is my body, and I can do what I choose with it. And that is nobodies buisness but mine. Smokers pay for your roads, your Medicare, and much more with our cigarette tax dollars. We are the scapegoat of the American society. Being a (almost completely) alchohol-free individual, how about we tax beer to 3 or 4 times it's cost? Alcohol causes plenty of problems and endangers all members of society--but it is somehow accepted while the smokers are perpetually denied their rights. It sickens me in this supposedly "free" country.

We aren't hurting anyone but ourselves. Why is this such a chip off your back?

how much do you think youve spent hurting your lungs on cigarettes?

im not just saying quit because of health reasons, but FINANCIAL reasons for your BENEFIT

I understand very well the health risks. I'm not blind. They are written right on the pack; I see them every time I light up.

I understand that from your perspective on life, it would be a good idea for me to quit. But isn't America about each individual having the right to choose? Why are we so fixated on forcing me to not partake in this particular activity that I happen to enjoy? Am I not the best person to judge what is in my best interest?
