Going to write about my day yesterday because its 3 in the morning, I'm stuck in a hotel in the Lake District and the Internet in here won't load anything other than forums.
Alright, so I woke up at 2pm on Saturday, this was the result of playing Half-Life all night like a miserable sob who misses the 90's even though he barely experienced that period of gaming. I went downstairs to have some food. Pasta and fried chicken, nice. Upon sinking my decaying teeth into the second slice of chicken there was a knock at the door. Turns out I was meant to start work today, my Dad does backstage catering for music festivals all around the UK, its a funky but back-breaking job. I had to get dressed rather quickly, still having no time to brush my poor teeth.
He had this huge truck full of kitchen equipment outside my house. It was from the same rental company he usually used. I didn't get to finish my food, and found myself on some road trip heading even further up North than where I already am. We were heading to the Lake District, the journey was about 75 miles of pretty hills and old people in caravans. This was a big event, and things could get pretty busy once it starts. So it was relieving to find that the area was deserted, it was all forest and rabbits. We pulled up to our food tent and went on from there.
We arrived there at 5pm. At first I had no idea what to do, my Dad was talking with one of the event Managers, and the two girls who we found at a restaurant in Wilmslow were unloading things from a truck somewhere. Eventually it was time to unload the van thing we were using. There was a lot of stuff in there, ovens, plants, tables, and I knew this was going to tire me out because I'm the kind who falls down the stairs and is too lazy to get up, so goes to sleep regardless. Anyway, first I had to gather a bunch of heavy tables and set them up in some kind of formation. These tables were just bare wood and gave me splinters. I was so tired having set them up, they were really heavy and I'm not one for exercise.
We had a few other people in the tent with us, but I still felt ill and overworked. The truth is, I wasn't, this is what it means to make money, hard work. I just soldiered on, and to be honest we did a nice job of it. I managed to hang the big vinyl posters on the side of the tent, using those plastic strap things. It was rather tricky because the tent fabric was so close to the metal structure that it was hard to feed the straps around the beams of metal to secure the poster things. I managed with some help though, I also did other things such as unwrapping plates and generally making the theme look more natural. It got easier as the day went on, almost as though they had ran out of things for me to do. I finally got a muffin and energy drink break, which was actually just me sneaking back to the van. Interesting though.
So, it was about 8pm now, and it was getting a little dark. I didn't mind with the heatwave we have head here recently. Then I got screwed over, well, I say that, but what I mean is that I didn't want to unload a freezing cooling truck full of food when my arms were destroyed from all the previous tasks. I mean, my Dad sent me there for some plastic cups, so why I spent two hours moving boxes of potatoes across the festival grounds in massive pain I have no idea! This was rather frustrating and I got very tired. Thankfully, people noticed how rubbish I was and helped me so we could all leave earlier. At about 10pm we were done, I was a little nervous being in the woodland at night, its how all horror movies start...
And to be honest, I was hearing screams in the background. Was it the wind, bats, who knows? We set off down the dirt track, contemplating my first day of hard work. One thing that was cool is that I wasn't mentally tired, only my limbs were shattered, which is why I'm up at 3am, go figure. We got to the gate in our van and it was locked. Fancy that, pitch black, woodland, can't get out. Then, 4 people sped down from behind us on a golf cart. Where they got the golf cart I have no idea, but it looked like good fun! We left the area and got back to the rural areas around the Lake District towns. Now, most people who work the week there stay on campus, but for some reason we were booked in a hotel miles away. I didn't mind, luxury is always better, and I enjoy road trips. The one issue is that we didn't have much fuel, and for some reason petrol stations don't exist in rural towns.
This was a problem because the hotel was beyond what the van could manage on fuel. And we desperately needed fuel, otherwise we would be spending the night at the side of the road like immigrants. After asking some people in a pub we got directions towards a few businesses. KFC, then B&Q, then bam, some fuel place of which I forgot the name. We filled it up and my Dad got us some food because I hadn't eaten all day. We set off down the motorway for an additional 25 miles and arrived at the wrong place. Well, it was close, basically a coffee shop in the middle of nowhere. We walked in with suitcases and stuff and everybody just stared at us. Eventually one of the workers in there came out and told us to follow behind him as he drove to the correct place, which wasn't too far. We arrived at the hotel, its a nice little place with more rooms than expected. The door didn't originally open, probably for security. Then a little bald man came along and opened it, and this was pretty much the end of my tiring day. We all head separate rooms, all 4 of us, which I didn't mind as I could take all the free snacks and keep them to myself. I've been in this room for 4 hours now and I'm bored. Fact is, I'm not sleeping.
I'm not sleeping because at 6:30 in the morning, which is in a few hours, we are travelling down to London to work on the other festival my Dad is catering for. He is currently doing 5 at once around the UK, sending different key people in the company to manage them. The drive to London is about 6 hours, which I will enjoy since I get to be lazy. Well, at least until I get there anyway.
Look Mods, I made a high quality post finally.
