So what's new Physics wise?

I'm not feeling the physics on GT5 yet. After two nights of driving I'm still getting no feeling what the car is doing 'under' me. It's very difficult to find the limits of grip, what I get is just lots of understeering to outside wall without any prior warning that the tyres were about to let go. (Using DFGT with all aids turned off, so far been driving just stock cars.)

I played a demo version a couple of weeks ago, it was set to a lap in Tokyo. I felt right at home with the steering then even if I normally hate that track. The wheel at the booth was G27 (I think). I don't know if it's the wheel or game version that is making the difference but what I have now is physics that feel somehow too forgiving but also difficult because you don't really know what the car is doing.

What I noticed in the wheel sittings is that when you are selecting the steering mode (simulation, amateur or whatever) DFGT and G27 are grayed out. As if that choice would only apply to other wheels. Somehow I think with DFGT you are stuck in amateur mode.

What I'm feeling is pretty much just the opposite. Odd.

Well its actually interesting that you say that because to be honest I wasn't sold after my first couple of races. I did a race in the GT-R race car at tsukuba and I'm not sure if it was because the AI was too slow or what but I felt as though the car just turned without telling me anything. There was no feeling of grip and no tyre noise to speak of. It wasn't until I took the Zonda out at Suzuka and got a bit of speed up that it started to make sense.

I'm yet to determine whether its the change in tyre sounds that made it difficult to gauge or whether I just wan't driving hard enough to begin with, but I will report back with more feedback over the next couple of days. have to say though, drifting the comaro around Suzuka definately felt right

Maybe because it's a GT-R. Lots of downforce and grippy tyres
Quite an easy car to drive on the limit, relatively speaking. It's why it's so fast in real life and in the game

How do people think the physics compare to Rfactor/Iracing or maybe more interestingly to Prologue?

To me the game seems easier and I've been able to drift easier than in Prologue. I am with all aids off including the new skid recovery. ABS = 1 usually. Am I playing in the most realistic way (besides ABS)?

The early levels are easy for most people. It gets a lot harder later on.

Doesn't that depend on the car you are driving? :sly:

Different cars have different settings. Most modern cars will have traction control and all will have ABS. Just turning everything off isn't necessarily realistic.

True enough. Standard practice in Prologue was turn everything off. I am mostly looking for opinions on the difference between Prologue physics and GT5. I personally think GT5 cars are a little easier to handle but I haven't played enough to make up my mind and want opinions on the realism of the physics vs. Prologue. I accept that difficulty and realism are different things, too.

Prologue physics were like a hovercraft on skates :)
And weight shifts wasn't that evident. It just felt numb

GT5 feels more connected to the road, better weight shifts and tyre model etc. Plus tyres heat and cool down individually

People, try Top gear challenge with Lotus 111R.

It is imposible to complete that without left foot breaking, Hell&toe and countering at the same time ! (G25)

By the way i just love top gear track. Probably the best track i have ever played. People from lotus created miracle ! :)

I mean realy.

I was taking my tuned LP640 down the chicane-free Mulsanne on a suicide top-speed run, and I lowered my car as far down as it would go to reduce drag and minimize lift from air going under the car, and I was doing 227 when I was nearing the end of it when I decided I should try to roll the car, since at 227, that would be one hell of a roll, but the pressure from the air going over the top of the car was so strong and it had pushed my car down so low that my steering jammed, my G25's force feedback came on super-super strong, like it does when it's in "rest" position, and I couldn't move the wheel to save my life.

It was AWESOME.

I completed that challenge a few hours ago...and I must say, between the poor FFB and odd physics/tire modeling of that car, the driving experience is laughably unrealistic IMO :ill:

Poor FFB ? Come one. It's LFS quality FFB. I agree on tyres part. It's like skating on ice with this car. Hmm ? Maybe tyres are Comfort not Sport ?

That's a good point, although there is very little correlation between the GT500 race car and the road going version. The Zonda also has lots of downforce and grippy tyres, so I'm going to put it down to the fact that it was my first race and I was still getting a feel for the level of grip.

I'll take the GT-R for a spin again tonight on a quicker track and see if I can get a better feel for it

TBH, I think I've become a bit spoiled by iRacing's FFB quality. I'm using a G27 and the amount of steering slop/dead zone in GT5 really detracts from the experience of replicating what a real car is like to drive :indiff:

To me, comparing iRacing's FFB to GT5's is like the difference I encountered when I tried playing NFS shift after playing GT5:P  GT5's physics are pretty decent, especially for a console system, it's just too bad the physics are covered up by such sloppy FFB.

Outlaw, I find quite the otherwise using a fanatec 911 turbo S. the ffb is marvelous..alteast for me. I was driving on the nordschlife and I landed right front first from one of the jumps, and the ffb literally ripped the wheel out of my hands as it pulled to the right on landing. I was quite impressed. that said though, it doesnt seem to be giving me much information when approaching the limit of the front tyres in regards to understeer and slipping point as well as some other titles do. maybe there is room for the ffb to be patched later on.

I'm absolutely in love with the physics in this game. The physics in prologue were Mama Bear and Pappa Bear. Standard was too sticky and pro was too slippery. This game is Baby Bear. Just Right!

I love that the GT-R GT500 corners on rails (as long as you don't get too happy with the throttle), and the 427 Cobra trys to kill me every corner no matter what I do. :D

The only car I've driven that I feel the physics are bad is the Lotus. That car CAN'T be that bad in real life. :dunce:

So if you brake in a RWD car without ABS in real life your back will always swing out? Just driving the RX-7 FD '02 right now and have been feathering the brake to brake normally but anything more than that and the back gets loose.
Is this realistic? I really don't know can someone with real life experience give us your thoughts on driving without ABS.

I know in GT5p you could set the brake bias so even when the brakes locked up, the back did not swing out, however no option exist in GT5.

But if that is how it works in real life, than I'll just keep practicing otherwise I might go back to ABS =1 which feels little wussy

Wait, you can't adjust bias??

The rear kickin out is a symptom of overly rear brake bias, being rear wheel drive will make it worse if you're engine braking, but you should be able to tune the bias to balance out brake induced oversteer.

I don't know if it's there in every car but I have adjusted the brake bias in several of my cars in the tuning menu. There is a brake bias box. You click on that and set the bias for front and rear. I haven't tried doing it from the DFGT.

It seems you have the "Brake Balance" setting in your garage cars but not for Arcade cars.

I find nKar is very close to iRacing in term of the FFB. GT5 I've yet to play but GTA TT came very close to both nKar and iRacing. To me it comes down to how simple and effective the FFB feels in these three games/sims (which they all do). It's the antithesis of how rFactor's or GTR2's (I believe both are based on the same gMotor2 engine) FFB feels- much more involving to the point of being both convoluted and contrived.

I believe there will be several spec update to GT5 physics and FFB. Just like GT5P (or any good sims including iRacing), we'll get a more refined and complete physics that cover all cars. I remember when GT5P came out the Ford GT (non-LM/RM) was atrocious to drive and seemed like it was clearly ported over from GT4. The Lotus Elise was hard to drive in GT5P (although it was quite fun especially with N2 or N3) and hopefully by the time I muster enough money to buy another PS3, the car will be perfect. I love that car to bits.

Looking at this video (courtesy of No46TheDoctor), I can't wait for this track, an NSX-R or an Elise 111R.

I'm aware of real word techniques thankyou having raced at a national level for 5 years.

Just buy the car and do some laps of Trial Mountain or Tsukuba

It sounds like iRacing or the like would be suited to your needs. I've always seen gt as a kind drivable car collecting game. Like a playable coffee table book. You need to pick it up with the right expectations.

My only point of real world reference is 150 kart racing and driving my road car, and based on those I think its an improvement over gt5p. I don't think there are huge differences to the tt demo, but, that was only one car wasn't it (two with the variation).

If you read the edge interview that kaz did when gt1 was about to release he said at the time he wanted to create the feel of a 'proper' driving sim without the cliff face learning curve. In gt5 I think he has definitley hit on that.

Ultimately, a sim is just that - a sim. It is an attempt to recreate the feel and behaviour of the real world. There is always a certain amount of subjectivity to it; there is always going to be disagreement over whether it actually feels real.

Someone have play rfactor or gtr2 and can tell me if the phisycs are equal, similar or totally diferent??

edit: i found GT5TT similar to GTR2 btw

Thanks!!!!

PS: im still waiting my copy :(

I've played rfactor quite a bit. Mostly open wheel stuff (f3 and nippon). They are different. Force feedback in gt5 is probably more muted compared to rfactor. Braking is very different. Depends on a lot of variables e,g, car, wheel, settings.

If you like cars, gt5 is a good buy. Simple as that.

Completely agree. You'd think traction control would help a car settle under acceleration not make it worse. It was almost the polar opposite of what you'd expect from a lotus. Normally, they're extremely well balanced and and grip like nothing else, but that felt like it was driving on ice with slick tyres. No grip, too much power. The car has a tendency to understeer 'not dramatically' not oversteer.

I think i get it.

I bought the ps3 just for gt5 so you can figure it, sure ill love it.

Many thanks!!!
