I have noticed a slight gas smell on start up in cold weather sometimes, like when I let my car warm up before I leave work at night (12am). Like you said though it's not every time and it's usually pretty cold out.

Does your reverse gear play games with you guys? Sometimes when I try to put it in reverse it feels like it is in gear but then when I try to go NOPE then just gotta try to put it in again, it's very random and not super common but it has happened a few times now. I have learned the slight difference in feeling to know right away that I just need to try again but it's strange. I have seen other scooby's do the same thing.
Yes I have that exact same problem. But in all honesty, almost every manual car I have driven in the winter has problems going into reverse. Especially when it is this cold out. Doesn't help that this car was beat up quite bad by previous owners.

Is this before or after you put the short throw in? Or both?

I don't have any issues with reverse. Clicks right into gear and works every time.
What short throw shifter did you install? That's one of the top priorities on my list for my WRX. I just don't know exactly which shifter to get. Sounds like yours works very well. Oh wait I just read yours is a 6 speed. I have the 5 speed.

I've got the Kartboy short throw, but yes it a 6 speed. Either way Kartboy is a good brand to go with from what I hear from most Subaru people.

Though I haven't got mine in yet I messed around with one that my buddy has in his car. He only has the front bushing and short shifter but the feel of the shift is very sharp and crisp and much shorter. I'm tempted to just throw my shifter in then do the bushings later when I can. I have heard nothing but good about them as well, when I get mine put in I will take comparison pictures and maybe do a brief review.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone in here. I will keep that in mind.

You both said I will also need bushings? Is that something internal in the transmission or external I can do when I swap the Kartboy short throw shifter?

After reading these replies I am almost positive that's the problem with my WRX. It needs a new shifter for sure. I will put that as the highest priority on my list so it doesn't start trashing the transmission.

Nothing is internal in the transmission. The bushings are a little tough to get installed. You'll be working from under the car, and will likely have to take off a cross member brace. In my car we had to disconnect the driveshaft.

Thanks. That doesn't sound too bad at all if the bushings are external. Crossmember and driveshaft are no big deal at all. My neighbor owns a shop with a lift that I can use at any time. I will just take it there when I do the shifter swap. I might wait until spring (March / April) just in case I run into problems. That way I can at least drive the Camaro to work if something goes wrong with the WRX. Do you have any youtube install videos or pics of the install? I will get the Kartboy shifter for sure. That will be my highest priority for sure. Then eventually coil overs. Maybe by then one of you will have your coil overs installed. :P

Want some opinions. I want new wheels, because quite frankly I think mine look too large. I also want stock wheels but the 5x100 bolt pattern STI wheels are near impossible to find so Im looking at the JDM Version 7 STI wheels. What do you reckon?

Current wheels

What I want

The current wheels look way better. They look similar to the WRC cars of that year. I think they are a perfect size. The JDM ver7/8 wheels don't look as nice but they wouldn't ruin the look of the car.

Current wheels look a lot better and I don't think they look too large at all. I personally would paint them black and then it would look even better. Just my opinion.

I would say smaller wheels just for the rally look but since winter is almost over you might as well keep the current wheels.

Saw a Subaru with smaller wheels at my job and it just looked a lot like a rally car.

The smaller wheels honestly look terrible IMO. It would also create more body roll. Or tire wall flex when turning.

The smaller wheels on that hatch would look OK if they were wearing some gravel tyres. Not so good if they were standard road tyres.

To be honest, this is the best looking version 9 I have ever seen. It has very minor tasteful mods that don't ruin the appearance of the original car. The wheels are the best bit about it.

If I had one of these cars I'd love to get either the wheels you have now,

These, not sure of the exact name but they are from the 2004 Subaru WRC car.

Or these Advan RGII wheels.

But they both look very expensive.

I appreciate the feedback everyone. I'm going to hang on to the current wheels and probably pick up a stock set for next winter at the very least.

Thanks very much! I tried my hardest not to ruin the look. The wheels I have now, the OZ Racing Alleggeritas, I got because they looked close to the WRC wheels the cars ran in 2003/4 and were fairly cheap. I've always wanted the Advans RGIIs, but those are very expensive.

I also really like the Advan RS wheels.

I don't think those Advans suit the car, and the tyres look too low profile for my tastes.

Those are the STI Type UK wheels, basically the same as the standard wheels that came stock on the cars. Also, that is a 2005, the bolt pattern is different.

2004 STI has 5x100, 2005 and above (STIs only) have 5x114.3

But I do like them 👍

Ohhhh yes those wheels look sick!! If you are stuck on wanting gold wheels, get those!!! Out of all the wheels posted, I really like these Advan RS wheels the best.

They also look good black. :sly:

I might! I'm a huge WRC fan (whole reason I bought the car), it'd be wrong not to have gold wheels on the blue STI.

Besides, I don't like the look of silvers and I tried black and wasn't a fan. At least not with my wheels.

If you really like gold wheels then get those gold Advan RS wheels for sure that are posted above on the white car in post#256. Those are easily the best looking wheels in this thread IMO.

PS. I think the black wheels look great on your car. :D

Sure, they're only about $700 a piece. :banghead:
Hey, YOU are the one that said you liked them and posted the irresistible pic. Its YOUR fault. :P

BTW I know your pain, my 18" Budnik Famos wheels for my Camaro were about $700-$800 a piece. Luckily I looked around years ago and found a killer deal for only $250 a piece. So it doesn't hurt to look around. Check ebay, craigslist, everywhere.

Those wheels came on the Version 9 car. I guess they won't fit your car as you say the stud pattern is different.
They look similar to the WRC wheels on the later model cars.

Check out this website. http://www.subaruwrcspares.com/1.html and the wheels you can get. http://www.subaruwrcspares.com/7.html Such a cool website, too bad it's UK and a lot of the parts wouldn't fit a standard road car body. Plus the price, ouch!
