State of Michigan Shutdown: Temporary Shutdown, Delay, Idiots Still Run the State

This is what has caused many small towns in the midwest to collapse. Marceline, MO was founded as a refueling and crew changing station for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad in 1888. There's one of four large coal towers in the nation that still stands. Times changed. First the superchief left, and then not even many cargo trains used the intermediate stop. Santa Fe pulled out in 1986. The Town's population when my dad grew up in the 50s and early 60s? around 6,300. The population as of the 2000 census? 2,558. Linn County, MO is one of the poorest counties in Missouri, and has a nasty reputation for frequent incidents involving methamphetamine.

Has the same not happened in and around Detroit?

There is some trend where the people are leaving some places and moving elsewhere. I never really got this. Everybody seems to be coming from California, but California just keeps getting bigger. Is this maybe why the towns and things keep dying? Are they all going to California. Or are we all still urbanizing that much?

Basically, where do the people go? Where do they come from?

I love how they raised taxes and said they can now make more jobs and stuff. Why does government need to create more jobs? That should be the last thing on their list if they're broke.

Michigan sounds like an uneconomic mess. I'm not going there any time soon.

They go to the big cities. more people, odds are there are more jobs. In the state of Kansas, every county, except for two have declining population.

Johnson county, where I'm from, is the bland suburban land of massive houses and far too many strip malls. Overland Park, the main city in the county, is home to the Sprint Corporation and Applebee's. Five years ago, when Sprint was going through a bad spell and having layoffs, entire streets in a neighborhood would seem pop up with for sale signs.

The Other county is (Sedgwick?) , where Wichita is. They've got Boeing and Cessna. only two counties in the state posted a population growth last year. Two!

(Gil, if you happen to read this, please correct any mistakes I've made)

Local areas in small towns typically rely on one main way to make a living. Whether it's a local company or farming, if something happens to that means of making a living, Hundreds of people are without a way to make money. So, they usually leave.
Example: Walsworth Publishing company employs 600 or so people in Marceline. What would happen if it burned down or relocated far away? 600 people are most likely not going to stay in town. When the Boll Weevil killed off the cotton that many sharecroppers grew, the ones that could escape that way of life went to the cities in the south to find work.

It's this simple: No jobs? No residents!
We probably need to make a new thread for this topic. This could be an interesting Tangent.

Yes, but government jobs and private sector jobs are two completely different things. Creating government jobs is a big no-no when you run private sector out of the state.

We do need the tourist dollars, please... Thats why we've got Tim Allen doing our Michigan travel commercials. Although, I've never understood why they advertise for Michigan, in Michigan...

Yes, yes, marvelous use of government money.

Well, at least you guys have police etc again, right?

And I think Omnis is right about what he is saying in regard to creating jobs and such.

Where else advertise it? From what I gather, there isn't anything big enough to advertise to people a long ways away that would make enough money to make it worthwhile and there are no big cities close enough (Besides Chicago and maybe a city or two in Ohio and Ontario) that one ad would reach a ton of people who would flock to the place, especially given that rural people don't seem to be the biggest tourist group. That leaves Michigan as the biggest tourist group in Michigan.

Have you tried Japan, though?

I would recommend some other industry.

Most of the time when they play it here its usually advertising for Golf or for the Lakes, or traveling to cities like Detroit and Kalamazoo for fun. Problem is, Detroit is only appealing for the football games these days, and Kalamazoo is only fun if you're planning on drinking down at Western (not that I do it).

Meh, most of us here on the West Side just go to Chicago anyway...

And most of us on this side of the state just go to Cedar Point.

But no one goes to Detroit, I don't know when the last time you were here was but it has gotten much worse in the past few years...not as bad as Flint however.

Well then they had better advertise in Michigan so that they can somehow keep that money in the state. I would say we have to worry about our own people supporting our state before we worry about bringing in cash from other places.

And I have heard a lot about how much of a let down Detroit is....

...from the West Coast. What a reputation.:indiff:

On attracting more tourists to the State, I almost posted something along the lines of promoting casino and gambling, last night.

This morning, they were showing the new MGM Grand in Michigan on the news. You guys are way ahead of me!

Haha. Wow. Actually, yeah, for whatever I would go there as a tourist, I would be happy to spend money there to fuel the economy. When I said "going there" I was actually speaking of living there.
