This is what has caused many small towns in the midwest to collapse. Marceline, MO was founded as a refueling and crew changing station for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad in 1888. There's one of four large coal towers in the nation that still stands. Times changed. First the superchief left, and then not even many cargo trains used the intermediate stop. Santa Fe pulled out in 1986. The Town's population when my dad grew up in the 50s and early 60s? around 6,300. The population as of the 2000 census? 2,558. Linn County, MO is one of the poorest counties in Missouri, and has a nasty reputation for frequent incidents involving methamphetamine.
Has the same not happened in and around Detroit?
There is some trend where the people are leaving some places and moving elsewhere. I never really got this. Everybody seems to be coming from California, but California just keeps getting bigger. Is this maybe why the towns and things keep dying? Are they all going to California. Or are we all still urbanizing that much?
Basically, where do the people go? Where do they come from?
