Steam sale thread: Summer 2017 Edition

Last night I scoured the entire catalogue to look for games I don't have that I might like, I came to the conclusion that I pretty much have everything on Steam, but I'd like a WWII flight sim as that's something I'm missing. I think the best of them appears to be IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, but Wings of Prey is cheap (75% off) and the demo was quite nice from the 15 minutes I played so I think I'll pick that up and hope IL-2 gets a better discount than just 33% at some point.

I also decided that if NFS: HP goes below £10 I'll get it, Battlestations: Pacific if it gets cheaper too maybe.

Is there a list of good games not promoted on the front page available somewhere? There are lots of steals available throughout Steam at the moment. :D

Speaking of an addiction, that's my list so far. Not listed are Portal 2, Trine 2, Sonic Generations & Sniper: Ghost Warrior since I bought those games for the missus. Bought Spec Ops: The Line earlier this month as well. Awesome game.

Looks like savygamer.co.uk are making a list of everything that's not on the front page according to the first two comments here, http://savygamer.co.uk/2012/07/12/steam-summer-sale-2012/ I imagine when it's done it'll appear on that page. Their site is great (but it's in English prices and features some UK-only (sometimes US-only I think) deals), I've 'saved' quite a bit thanks to them... 'Saved' because I bought games I otherwise wouldn't have, but at some ridiculously low prices so it's ok. They also cover console games and the consoles themselves, which is cool.

Just think of the games you want and look them up. I've been checking HL1, HL2, Amnesia and Worms Reloaded. All four of these games are on sale and haven't been announced on the front page. I am, of course, waiting for them to go up on a flash sale or daily deal for even crazier "savings".

Finally, Race 07 and all its expansion packs got real cheap. Bought it all. That game has amazing AI!

Also bought Tomb Raider Anniversary. Simply for the nostalgic factor.

Yeah but there are also some games you might not even know about yet so browsing the catalogue can uncover some great stuff (like Race 07, actually) but waiting for whatever you do want is wise as you say, unless it's relatively obscure or already at 75% off. If DCS: Black Shark, Myst, Riven or Wings of Prey get any cheaper than they are, I'm going to eat my own hat and then probably a few other peoples' as well.

Going for GTR Evolution tonight as well. \o/

Ya, if it's 75% off then jump on it. That's as cheap as they'll go.

They raise the prices after a certain amount of time. I picked up Portal 2 and Borderlands GOTY for $5/10 and they are no longer that cheap.

I've noticed at least one pricing mistake, they had Frozen Synapse up at 90% off and changed it to 80% off within an hour or so, otherwise I personally haven't noticed any prices creeping up. I saw that you bought Portal 2 when it wasn't in a featured sale and thought it was a bit odd but that would explain it I suppose.

Ya, I kind of just jump on them when they hit 75% off. Got Portal 2 for the wife since she likes puzzle games.

I think I missed the last Community Choice winner. I think it was between GTA4 and some others... can't remember. I know I wanted something out of it. Woke up late today lol.

It was GTA 4, Just Cause 2, and Dead Space 2. DS2 won.

Actually I was gifted with CO today (Thanks Wiegert, your're really really awesome  ) via steam.

Aw, no problem mate. It's a shame you couldn't actually buy it over there, so I hope you enjoy the game now that you have it. :D

Oh, and uh... that's all I bought really.

How does gifting work? Do you have to buy a game to gift it? Or steam awards you a free-gift coupon after buying a few games or something?

Does anyone mind gifting me Cities XL 2012 so I can gift it to one of my friends? I have 1 Cent left, and I can't use a credit card because my parents would kill me.

My steam ID is 1701adguru... I would post my friends ID, but it's all special characters that my iPod doesn't have.

Only wondering because it's $9.99.

You have to buy a game and make it a gift purchase, otherwise it just gets added directly to your library. Some games do give you guest passes (a timed pass to the full version of a game), some give you free copies of the game (Frozen Synapse did this, may still do) but most don't do either.

The other day I bought a few Killing Floor DLCs and got two guest passes, so if anyone wants one then let me know. I have no idea how long they're for as it doesn't say, but it does say they're 'for a limited time period'.

I bought Cities and I'll likely but Age of Empires tonight. I've I'm going to have to make room on my computer here.

I'm just curious, which game should've been in that spot? It's 6:30am GMT now.

Neither connecting through a German nor Swiss VPN changed it at all, so I guess it wasn't available throughout Europe. :P

Terronium-12
Dungeon Siege III.

Whatever that is.

I can confirm that from Canada so must be a Europe thing. In some positive news I free'd up 45 GB of space on my poor little 256 GB HD. 35 GB in app backups...yikes.Age of Empires, Magicka and Cities will all be installed shortly. Thank god for unlimited bandwidth caps here in Western Canada.

Hm, I can see Dungeon Siege III as well when I checked it from the office. Our IP is French as well, however, but our ISP is Telia Sonera - so not much of an ISP that's used in households. Weird...not interested in Dungeon Siege III anyway, luckily. :D

About bandwidth: left my machine running tonight, 68gb down. Still, lots and lots to go...my router is almost crying as much as my wallet does.

68GB in one night! I'm lucky if I get 20... Luckily I've not bought anything bigger than 5GB so far, but Max Payne 3 may be on the cards and that's 35GB alone. Luckily I'm on a business connection so we have no limits, I dread to think how much gets downloaded in this house every month.

This sale has been pretty uneventful for me, it hasn't been as cheap as it has been in the past so I haven't been buying stuff I otherwise wouldn't have at full price, like FEAR for example. I got all of the PS2 era GTA games for £5 and GTA IV with the Episodes for another £5, so the entire FEAR franchise consisting of three somewhat mediocre games, the newest of which came out over a year ago and the oldest of which is pretty old, for £9 isn't good value in my opinion. I think Valve know that they've at best had a slight effect on and at worst have ruined the typical PC gamer's perception of value and are slowly phasing out the ultra cheap sales they used to run. If that is what's happening then I think that's fair enough, if I see a game I sort of want but don't want to pay full price for I just wait for a Steam sale to knock it down to £10 or less. That's great for me but it must be pretty bad for PC game sales if the average Steam user sees it the same way.

I moved from Versailles (immediate suburbs of Paris) a bit farther away (~15km), so the internet is slower where I live now. My friend, who's still living in downtown Versailles, is using Numericable - 12mb/s downloading from Steam. Luckily internet connections are generally unlimited in France, so traffic isn't much of an issue. My mobile has a traffic limit, tho - 2gb / month. After that it's slowing my traffic down a bit. :D

Current standing: 165€

Added Skyrim today...couldn't resist any longer, it's even cheaper than a Russian Skyrim key atm.

Sniper Elite V2 is at 50% off right now... Somewhat tempting.

Have you played the demo? I was a little bit obsessed with it, I kept playing it over and over trying to complete it in different ways; no scoping, 100% accuracy, headshots only and all that sort of thing. The full game is exactly like the demo, no exceptionally long shots (longest in the game is about 400m, which is quite far but not as far as in the original) but one thing they didn't include in the demo is the background noise mechanic, which is where an indicator pops up on screen to let you know that the background noise (bombers flying overhead, machinery, explosions) is loud enough that no one will notice you shooting.

If you do go for it and you think you want the (still) overpriced DLC, you might as well spend the extra amount to get Sniper Elite as well, if you can get past the graphics which aren't great the game might actually be a better sniping simulator than SEV2, which is more arcadey. The first game let you alter your movement speed with the mouse, it had a camo indicator (if I remember correctly) and some shots in that game were approaching 1km, maybe even more. I'm sure I've seen a 1km headshot video on Youtube.

Personally I really liked it, but a lot of people really didn't. The AI is really poor but the sniping is great, people say it's not particularly realistic but if you've ever played BF3 or Arma II, it's kind of more realistic than either as you can choose to have the wind interfere with your bullets which neither of those games have. Also there's a co-op mode (which I haven't touched) and a Vs. mode (which I think might be dead but was quite fun, nothing spectacular though).
