Super Unofficial DiRT 4 Thread (PS4/XB1/PC)

I really hate landrush. Can't wait to finish it on career and never touch it again
In the end, I turned the AI down and all assists on to minimise the pay-out. When I started the races, I gave the AI a thirty-second headstart, then cruised to the end and made sure I failed all of the objectives. As such, I made virtually no money and got very little experience, but still completed the events and unlocked rallycross (and contributed to unlocking historical rallying). Because otherwise it would be possible to win close to 500,000 credits (I usually have a 90% performance bonus) and level up four or five times for a game mode that is both frustrating and unenjoyable - and once you know how to handle the cars, it cam be ridiculously easy; I was winning buggy races on pro difficulty with the 90% bonus when I reset my career progress because I felt like I was cheating.

I quite like the Joyride challenges; they lack variety but actually test driving skill pretty well, so they're fun and fit into the game well imo. Good use of the DirtFish sandbox and a nice break from the competitive/career events. Some of the later ones are pretty challenging too - was doing the group B ones earlier and looking at the leaderboards, less than 100 people have gotten gold on them so far.

Here's one I got a bit carried away with, spent like an hour on it and ended up topping the leaderboard (though I'm sure that'll go soon, far from perfect driving):

I like them, too, but I do wish that DirtFish was bigger. Joyride takes all of the best parts of the Battersea Power Station from Dirt 3 and leaves behind the superfluous and insubstantial Ken Block-inspired nonsense.

The weekly even at Michigan highlighted the downsides of MyStage dramatically. The amount of re-used corners was staggering, sometimes 4-5 times on the same stage. I haven't noticed this as much in Wales or Spain (which are much better locations anyway), but it was so noticeable in Michigan that it really threw me off.

I am enjoying it more and more, I do like the your stage as you can quickly just jump in and make the stage your own. Weather, length etc It is nice to have but I have also seen repeat corners on the longer stages (random). I am really liking the DS4 handling and I tried out the Escort mkii and found it to be pretty good as a standard tune and didn't touch it but this was on dry gravel so it may need tweaking on the wet/harder stages.

I also like the Dirt Academy and hooning around with in 'Free' mode I tried the joy ride but wasn't for me.

So far I have to say Rally X is still my favourite by far and I like all the new short courses (that were not in Dirt rally) in most weathers. This is really well done and the tarmac/asphalt sections grip wise seem pretty good to me and the handling makes such a difference to how dirt rally was in Rally X.

I still miss the older Rally X stages from Dirt2/3 'Smelter' especially I would like to see again.

I also saw 2 'rabbits'? :P run across very quick but they were not on the replay and a drone was in the road but whizzed off just before I was about to crush it!

Full size ones in photo thread.👍

It is not needed to do one single Landrush event to unlock WRX and Historic Rally. I've only been completing rallying and I've come to unlock both WRX and Historic Rally 👍

I know. But I didn't want to get too far into rallying before unlocking historic rallying.

@torque99 - the animal non replay is odd. I've seen something cross the stage only in Sweden so far but not replay. On the Powys stages I've seen a gaggle of grouse or whatever they are, fly up across the hood in the moor a few times and they do appear in replay
Too bad we dont have Argentina to see a cow standing stationary crosswise on the stage

Don't give them any ideas... Having to drive in a snow blizzard, at night, with no comms is already a major PITA.

Lol

Yeah it sucks when the comms are out 3-4 turns

On a side note, its too bad there's not a more developed livery editor because I'm sure youd make some righteous paints

I very well could have finished in Tier 2 in today's owner's event had I not taken a wrong turn at a junction. :banghead:

It's a 4K-capable console. As far as I know, every AAA title released this year has had 2K, 3K or 4K support on the Pro, which makes Codemasters look like the lazy unprofessional studio I am beginning to suspect they are, given all the backward steps they took with this game and all the unfixed bugs and questionable design decisions in past titles.

The graphics "boost" you mention is improved AA and a more stable framerate. Very, VERY weak Pro implementation IMO and not worthy of the "Pro Enhanced" label on the box. On top of that, besides the nice lighting engine, the game looks terrible.

Codies mentioned that they "might look into" HDR in the future (although that also works on vanilla PS4).

It's hard to believe that a AAA game like this was released in June 2017 with next to zero pro support.

4K on PC and 1080p on PS4 Pro? Pathetic...

Hmm.. can you name some 4K ps4 pro games that run at 60fps?

I'm done with Landrush forever! I finished off the class with the annoying Crosskart and can now focus on the fun classes. Granted I did actually enjoy the Pro-4 truck but the tracks are so boring I can't see myself going back to it.

Now to tackle the weekly and monthly rallies!

So maybe I just don't understand how the AI works, but how does this happen? I finished in second, and this guy is six seconds faster than me, and 20 seconds faster than the next AI. It also easily gapped me by a second right off the line. I have them set on demanding now. I was on simulation driving until I started dropping way off and crashing because I was pushing too hard.

I wasn't talking 60fps + 4k as that is too demanding for the Pro. But 2k or 3k should be doable if the dev feels like taking the time to optimize.

Here are the current 60fps + native 4k games:

  • FIFA 17 (some 30fps camera modes)
  • Hustle Kings (HDR support)
  • Mantis Burn Racing (HDR support)
  • NBA 2K17 (some 30fps camera modes)
  • Neon Chrome
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 17 (some 30fps camera modes)
  • Rez Infinite (Area X may be sub-4K)
  • Thumper
  • Viking Squad
  • Wheels of Aurelia
  • WipEout

Anyone who's playing with an Xbone controller can share their advanced input settings setup? (also for Simulation mode)

I gave it a fair shot, but I think I'm done with Dirt 4. I can't help but compare it to Dirt Rally and find it lacking where it really counts: enjoyment. Wrestling the cars around the stages in Dirt Rally was incredibly fun, while in Dirt 4 I'm enduring rather than enjoying it. Add in the terrible optimization on PC and the insta-spin when you put a wheel off the track and it's hard to justify putting myself through the frustration any longer.

It's sad, because I absolutely loved Dirt Rally. But Dirt 4 has been a disappointment.

Well they definitely want to keep the 60fps, so it's not an easy task for the p4p. Maybe they do something in an update.
I don't think its still a very big team working on the game.

They went for AAA price it seems.. maybe should have been a tad lower.

I do recall Codies stating that Your Stage is very demanding for the hardware.

HDR would be great news as I feel that is much more of a visual leap than higher resolution.

Speaking of dev teams, where is Evolution Studios? Codies has them locked in the basement?

Agree with the price comment. We need three more rally locations! And the complete RX calendar would be nice, too.

The first big buggies championship was much more enjoyable than the Crosskarts one. I loved throwing it into the corners and balancing the oversteer over the bumpy corners. Thankfully it was enough to unlock the Rallycross section of the career mode. I bought a used S1600 Corsa to start RallyX because of my affiliation with the road cars.

I've been really enjoying the game on my G29 in Sim mode. Even on the standard wheel settings, the cars have felt superb to drive.

So, I just spent two hours in the branding suite, fiddling around with liveries to try and find one I liked.

No luck.

I was rather surprised by the lack of livery options considering how many fantasy liveries are in the game.

The problem with the custom liveries is that most of them have been tailored to each car, which you notice as some graphics have designs which wrap around features of the car (lights, grill and wheels for instance). Even though we can only select around 8 designs, the game actually has a huge number of templates to accommodate these differences.

The other option is to go with the GRID 2 route and have over 50 templates that can be applied to all the cars, but some of the cars don't showcase the full design.

I've already started to become bored with the game's track generation in general which is a shame. Wales and Spain are the best venues in my opinion by far, anything else I take it a hard pass on.

I've found that the key to a good stage is to balance length and complexity. Codemasters said it themselves - you need to be able to build up speed. You can't just turn the length and the complexity all the way up and get success every time. And to complicate things, the default complexity is different for every location; Australia is far more technical than Michigan. So even when the stages recycle tile sets, if you get the balance right it doesn't feel like you're constantly driving the same sections of road.

Does anybody know how to get old sponsors back? I kinda want dalik Fodda back.

Lower level sponsors are only found when you have a low level PR Agent. I really wish that once you unlock a sponsor offer, you have that offer forever, because I'd like to have Repco back. It's also annoying that when your sponsor contract runs out, you can't renew the contract and continue.

Sponsor levels can change independently of your actions. When I was mucking around with it, I found Dansport as an E-grade sponsor; when I reset my career pfogress for a serious attempt, Dansport was a D-grade sponsor.

I haven't tried it myself, but if you know which category a sponsor belongs to, you can assign your PR agent an affinity perk for that category, which makes it easier to attract sponsors from the category. And there will always be ten sponsors available, even when you have just signed one up, so you may be able to find one that you want if you keep re-signing sponsors. Especially if you do not already have a sponsor from the preferred sponsor's category.
