Well I don't know the exact specs on this car but an excellent sleeper would be the lingenfelter H2 it looks completely stock except for different rims. It does 60 in about 5.0 seconds and does 13's in the quarter mile, it was featured at the motor trend site a few months ago. Its sad that john lingenfelter can't be with us and make monster cars out of ordinary cars anymore.
Heres that link-http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0308_tuner_h2/

Hey thanks for the link Pimp Racer :) , looks like I was a bit shoddy by the specs, it really gets to 60 in 6.3 seconds and a 14.4 on the quarter mile. Pretty amazing how lingenfelter can make a tank go so fast.

 yeah but I would rather go offroading with it rather then the drag strip or track.

Lol yeah, I'd rather be offroading too but its still fun to see the look on all the ricer's faces after you smoked them off the line. :)

I would NEVER call a Hummer a sleeper for any reason and here's why. The Hummer, especially the H2, is more of a civilian-happy version of the AM General Hummer H1. Hummers are without a doubt, the number one truck that can take on on-road and off-road. You see the military use these. But a Hummer H2 is a truck all jacked up in the air, has a lot of horsepower, and is anything but a daily driver (I mean, come on now). The H2 may look soft to some people, but I don't think I'd see a Hummer be this muscle-car slaughtering machine. And don't get me started on a big ass truck that could literally run over your average or not-so-average sport compact.

So, ANY Hummer is a mean machine regardless. More mean than George Foreman's grilling machine. On the show "Sports Car Revolution," the rockstar Kazzer drove this Comptech Acura RL that packed 300 horsepower. Well now, a front-drive luxury car (or RWD perchance?) tuned by a pretty good team, and put in navigation and all... to me, that's a sleeper no matter what any muscle car fan thinks. No bling. No "rice." It is a luxury car modded to run. You want to mod a serious luxury machine? Try to make something out of the soon-to-be-sacked Mercury Maurauder. This Comptech Acura was painted in a beautiful dark blue color. Of course, Kaz likes his rides in black, and black would make no difference for this car.

Any more sleepers? Any other cars that can blow the doors off anyone?

Sleeper implies that the car does not look sporty and that it is 'surprising'. The Acura RL has plenty of HP out of the box, comes with a V6...and when it says the engine size (3.2 or 3.5) in the name, its kind of blantantly telling you what it is, also taking away from the 'sleeper' catagory.

The good old 1.0 Daihastsu Charade a brothers mate use to have one that chopped rexys at the lights. I would of loved to see there faces.

My girlfriend's parents own an Overfinch-conversion Land Rover Defender 110.

They need all ten seats because her mum has six kids (yes, SIX) and she also does childminding (proof that women really are more mad than men, if any was needed). But back on subject, its gota old-school 5.7 V8 wedged in the front.
A similar one was clocked at 0-60mph n 7.2seconds.

Now that might not seem that quick, but at the lights, with it loaded with teenagers on the way to the flicks on a Saturday night, you just wait for modded Vauxhall Novas or Peugeot 106s to pull beside you.

You should see there faces when they get there butt kicked by an old Landie!

Ah, Overfinch, forgot about them! They have been doing stuff to Range and Landrovers for years. The current model can be had with a 380bhp version of the BMW V8 which can be seen in the video i have linked to below (choice of quality).

http://www.overfinch.com/New_RangeRover/video.htm

This isn't the quickest they've done though with versions of the Chevy small block up to 6.3 litres being fed to old model Range Rovers. Spec sheet and video of the 630R with said 6.3 V8 below:)

My old man's former 1970 Ford Country Squire Wagon (Estate) for those of you on that side of the "pond". It had the "woody" sides, roof rack, single exhaust, "grocery getter" looks. But its heart was a 429-SCJ with a Holley 1050 double pumper. From the factory so equipped!

The Ford Taurus SHO. Only give-away was the twin pipes and the little bitty "SHO" in the rear bumper.

Any car that the Chrysler corporation built prior to 1973, that was ever pressed into duty by the California Highway Patrol. The civilian versions were just as fast only without the lightbar, pushbar, and ugly paint. They could even be ordered with the "Police Package" that included the Heavy duty suspension, the "good" tires, and the Honkin' big 383 or 440 cid motor.

Well, around here the best sleeper would be something that looks ridiculous (ie. 36" wing, grey primer bodykit, stickers). I remember an old integra at the track that was "accesorized" and it ran in the low 12s.

Yeah the H1 was way better then the H2.

The old man eventually sold it. But where it is now I couldn't say.
I had some fine times in the at old car.
Even if it only got 12 MPG.

hey, for a 429 HEMI with a 1050, it had excelent gas milleage. it was well maintained, I can tell.

I probably have the best Sleeper around. A 1992 Ford Station Wagon. It may look slow, but if you pop the hood, you'll get a suprise. It's got a 3.8 liter v6 under there. Looks like I'll be killing imports for a while.

The 3.8 actually had decent low-end torque. It's not a horrible car, I think.

Any Forester 2.5XT w/ a smoked intercooler converted from the top of the engine to the front by the front bumper (like the Evo). And change the hood from the XT (w/ hood scoop) to the X/XS (w/o hood scoop), and no XT badges.

-> My type of a sleeper. ;)

I see this all the time, and I used to be guilty of it myself when i was younger. Hummers are not the Ultimate.... well anything. Being In the military, and driving my fair share of REAL Hummers, I think i'm more qualified than most on this subject. Hummers, well H1's as you civies know them now, were a good design, pretty inovative even. But When it comes to Offroading, they are too heavy (except for some unloaded military versions ie, softop pickup) and underpowered. Full I.S. is not the way to go for offroading. For a normal dirt road type stuff, yeah, smoother ride, but when it comes to really getting into it, Straight Axle rigs are the only way to go. (so far, i'm sure I.S. will continue to advance) And the H2 is joke. I wouldn't take that monster offroad any sooner than an Escalade. GM has accomplished it's mission though: Make tons of money of the Hummer name and look. I would always take an H1 over a H2 or H3 however. H1's are not total crap, but not the Truck Gods alot of people praise them to be.

*On Topic*
My sleeper Vote goes to C3 Vettes. I think they would surprise a lot of people in road course performance.

powripper
The Volvo V70 R, a 300hp turbo wagon. in Motor Trends words: "the V70 R really moves the freight. Its slalom speed of 65.9 mph betters non-Z06 Corvettes".
My friend had a good run against one of those speed-wagons in his LT1 Z28. We won, but it was fairly close it was funny!

You have no idea how big the Ford 3.8L aftermarket is do you? :sly: That is a badass motor it saddens me to think you'd knock it like that... My dream car has a 3.8L in it.

The Buick Turbo Grand National is an AWESOME sleeper. Those things are crazy.

Other stock sleepers that come to mind:
Ford SVT F-150 Lightning (mid 13 second pick-up truck)
Ford Thunderbird SC
Ford SVT Focus
Ford SHO Taurus
Mercury Cougar XR7 ('89-'90)
Mercury Marauder
Lincoln Mark VIII LSC
Lincoln LS
Pontiac Grand Prix GTP
Pontiac Bonneville SSEi
Mazda MazdaSpeed Protege
Chevrolet Malibu Wagon (older rwd versions with 350cid)

A sleeper from Britain is the Rover 620 Ti

2-ltr Turbo engine, 197hp, 0-60 7.2 secs, top speed 140, all from soemthing that looked like Grampa's runabout:

Yes - that Corolla is evil...

The best "as bought" sleeper had to be the Lotus Carlton (Lotus Omega for our continental friends). A standard-looking, black (actually dark green) Vauxhall Carlton/Opel Omega, but messed around with by Lotus. Looked totally standard, but for slightly larger wheels and a Lotus badge. Highly potent car.

That's one of my favourite cars, actually. Looks sorta like a Holden Commodore, which is my favourite car. :P

Sleeper? Holden Gemini, without a doubt.

Which, Incidentally, in germany (and the rest of europe, 'cept for ol' Brit) was called the Opel Omega, and was the exact same car...

No wonder they look alike...

There was a car Famine posted a picture of not so long ago, a Toyota Corolla, from a tuning company called Fensport. They made a 535hp, 4wd Corolla that looked almost (they had to make some subtle tweaks) stock.

The Fensport Corolla is awesome, I have seen it run around ten 11 second runs now and it grows on me every time I see it. I took a picture of it's engine bay if anyone wants to see it posted up?

Takumi Fujiwara
The problem with sleepers is, it's easy to make a drag sleeper, not as easy to make a road race sleeper. Even with a stock body, the ride height and stiffness of a performance suspension are easy to spot. And a car intended for handling will also have performance tires, and rims are important as well.
*raises his hand* my car is a road sleeper! ...well maybe not cause of what it is >_> depends on how ppl look at it.

So what is it, a Lotus Carlton, a Vauxhall Carlton or an Opel Omega?

I can see there being some niggling over what to call that... "it's a Lotus! No it's a Vauxhall! You're both wrong - it's an Opel".

Better them then me!
