The game can't even run properly at 1080P, let alone 4K... that's absolutely laughable in this day and age. What the hell has gone on at KT Games? How can they get it SOO wrong? It's 2024, you shouldn't be having issues with optimisation! I thought this game was going to offer something different, something that doesn't follow the mould of Forza Horizon or The Crew but what we got was an unfinished mess that doesn't look up to standard and doesn't take advantage of the tech we now have at our disposal. How can KT seriously consider this to be any good? The people at the helm don't know squat it seems, because anyone with more than 2 brain cells will realise that this game is not fit for distribution, let alone sale to the public AT FULL PRICE. It's just not worth it.

Totall bummer but kinda expected it from KT since their games are like very mid unfortunately :(

also those graphics thats like PS3 all over again but without the blur xD

This is the discussion thread for an article on GTPlanet:

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Review: Hong Kong Phooey

It’s been a bit over 13 years since the last game in the Test Drive Unlimited series, TDU2, and while that had something of a mixed reception it did gain a niche following. As such, the third game in the series has been one much anticipated on GTPlanet...
Oh my, I didn't expect 2.5 stars. With that, thank you for your review Famine; it's further confirmed in my head that buying this at launch isn't a good idea.

Though if I even thought of buying this game, it would probably be after it was on sale within a year.

It'll more likely send a message to publishers that open world racing games aren't worth investing in and thus provide even less choices in the future. You should instead be hoping that Nacon actually listens to their unhappy studios and allows them to remake the game in a manner that makes it fun to play, rather than be designed for maximum publisher revenue as that's where the real problem with the design lies.
Doesn't sound like Nacon is a particularly amenable publisher to begin with. Realistically, the disastrous demo that this game had, the constant unfavorable comparisons to Forza Horizon 5 it has dealt with and the collective indifference that it has gotten since then (even before the bad reviews started pouring in) means the studio is going to close down within six months as the game limps along for maybe a year before being unceremoniously turned into a coaster.
And if publishers want to take the failure of what has pretty consistently looked like a cynical IP badging exercise from a dodgy publisher (particularly considering how much of a borderline asset flip this game looked) an excuse to just not make any more games like it, there's little to be done on the matter regardless of the reason people refuse to buy it.

TBH I do miss the golden age of TDU2 (when it worked) and just roleplaying as a millionaire that gets to choose what colour stitching goes on my new aston martin seats, to then drive to the casino and winning big on the tables and slot machines. Good times!

I was happy that they are bringing casinos back but I'm doubting its to the same extent, also the old physics weren't the best but were stable enough to get used to. This one sounds just bad?

I'll wait to see how the game develops and how the casino works before I decide whether to get this or not.

Hello, Ive not comented were in a long time but I'm to say that I am deeply disapointed with the fact the devs didn't try some thing new on regards to the driving physics and mechanics.
Am I the only One who would like to have realistic Open World driving simulator?
Like beamng but with an actual game a round it.
Of course, it would not have the Crash physics of beamng.

Grind, you keep using that word. If you play it and enjoy it then it's no grind at all!
Most laughable is that they keep saying it at racing games forum. Like, core experience of any racing game is driving, which isn't really that different. Games about F1 and GT3, for example, are about you keep doing totally same thing for hours. Whole genre is about grinding, its ok.

Just watched a guy trying to get past the character creation screen for 20 minutes. Getting the same login error from the Beta. Finally he managed to get to play. Drove to the first race. Race about to start.. crashed to desktop.
They sure stressed the servers during those Betas. 🤣

Yep, never managed to get past the character creation screen. It's now saying "Maintenance notice due to blah blah we apologize for any inconvenience" At least they're hopefully working on the issue and later today I can play the game (with a bit of luck) Still, it gives them a week to fix any bugs preventing the game from launching.

Just... look at it. If you can.
The graphics remind me a lot of The Crew. Similar washed out look/lack of details of the environment. But The Crew has much nicer looking cars, especially looking at the Windows/reflections/lighting. Just watched two videos side by side. I guess I don't have to remind anybody that The Crew was released in 2014. For the PS4. Oof.

Not sure you really understand grinding.
"grinding" is act of repeating some actions to achieve some results. Typically referred to gaining some type of in-game resources in RPGs, but wide definition could be referred to any repetitive activities(time trials, for example).

There is a difference. With grinding you are improving stats on a game character usually, whereas with circuit racers you are working on your own skills memorizing the track and improving lap times.

I’d only call a circuit racer like GT or FM grinding if there was some specific goal to reach an in game level. PC race sims even less so because they have zero game-like elements.

but wide definition could be referred to any repetitive activities(time trials, for example).
No, that's just moving goalposts. Definition. Being forced to do the same thing for 100 hours in order to obtain some item trophy is grinding. Playing 100 hours of soccer matches in FIFA is not. Voluntarily running a time trial for 100 hours to improve your skills is not grinding. Racing the same event to obtain enough credits for that one special car is. The negative aspect is essential for it to be a grind.

Gutted that this has turned into a car crash launch.

Hopefully it'll be stable this evening, as I went for the Gold Edition, because I could see myself getting plenty of time out of this. Fingers crossed I enjoy it.

Quite the harsh review but I totally agree with it, I'm not even surprised, saw this one coming even before that Beta test. I'll probably pick this up a year from now on when it's 80% off.

One day I feel like we're gonna have a decent Forza Horizon-like racing game available on Playstation, today is not that day.

This is more or less what I expected from this developer. Their WRC games weren’t anything special either.

No, that's just moving goalposts.
There is some universal set in stone definition? Wiki definition is what I said, there isnt anything about "forced to do"

Being forced to do the same thing for 100 hours in order to obtain some item trophy is grinding.
You voluntary playing this game, no one forcing you to do so.
Playing 100 hours of soccer matches in FIFA is not.
Why? Its perfectly aligned with you definition of "to do the same thing for 100 hours in order to obtain some item trophy is grinding"
Racing the same event to obtain enough credits for that one special car is.
Voluntarily running a time trial for 100 hours to improve your skills is not grinding.
If you voluntarily running a time trial for 100 hours to improve your skills and obtaining enough credits for that one special car its grinding or not? I see some flaws in that logic.

Oh, please don't suck, please, please don't suck, you are my only hope after GT7 is out for the count.

Test Drive Unlimited is my all time favorite racing game, I really hope this can live up to its name.

My prediction with this dev and the WRC series is curb your enthusiasm.

Based on what? I'm not just going to take your word on it, what exact problems did you have with them or the WRC games?

I’m not in the mood to rehash everything from the past 5 years, this link will take you to a post launch discussion of their latest release.

In the time it took to find the link to that random topic, you could've summarized in two lines what's so bad. Someone having issues with an H pattern? Is that it?

Usually when someone says they can't be bothered to argue their assertions it means they had nothing in the first place.
Don’t just take my word for it, read the review.

Why? Its perfectly aligned with you definition of "to do the same thing for 100 hours in order to obtain some item trophy is grinding"
This is another one of those "nuances of English" thing, and you've actually called yourself out on it in the bold above.

If done to achieve an arbitrary goal set by the game - whether as the most effective or only way to achieve the goal - it's grinding. If it's done because you want to, or to achieve an arbitrary goal set by yourself, then it is not.

Racing the same race dozens or hundreds of times because you want to isn't grinding, but if it's because it's the fastest way to earn money to buy a car that's available for one week every 14 then it is. And it's absolutely possible to enjoy grinding and for grinding to be a choice - after all, wanting that car is a goal set by yourself; that doesn't negate the idea that the process is still grinding.

By the definition that any repetitive action is grinding, then masturbation is grinding your willy (apologies to any non-willy-holders reading).

To be honest, I didn't find TDUSC that grindy. I got a trophy for earning 1m credits, and I only had a few hours to play it in total. Higher value races further in will probably result in it never taking too long to earn the money required - and I think we're the only outlet so far to note that the values (of prizes and parts and cars) all seem 10x higher than we'd expect likely as a result of that being close to the USD/EUR/GBP exchange rate with the HKD.
