Consider myself 'schooled' you guys are truly amazing. đź‘Ť

On GT5 I just used the sequential shifts being a T500RS user. But with iRacing I found I had to go with a clutch on the more advanced vehicles (like the Riley). I'll have to investigate into this much further then because I do have to shift during a turn and am having some trouble navigating between brake and clutch with my left foot.

So you guys called it perfectly to get to the point

[edit] BNGRacer please ignore my previous comment then. I actually need to learn your method of driving (its the inverse)

Can I give you a tip? I don't know if you like anime but I got a lot of knowledge from Initial D and build upon that. Lol
So I am not schooled. I've only got my drivers license for 6 years now and have never raced in real life. That said, I've only started to be more serious in my approach to racing since half a year. My next step will be to dive further into the technical stuff of a car.
But really don't take a cartoon to serious when it comes to driving techniques. Although it did gave me some ideas I wanted to try right away. On the other hand the anime is about drifting and I am still not good in that. 4WD drifting is easy though, FF I need to tinker with the setup more, FR is still a hurdle for me.

Oh in GT5 try the Spoon Civic (EK9) for learning left foot braking. That thing really wants to go straight so it will force you to use it. I also love to use left foot braking in a new Mini Cooper.
Also when driving on snow or ice in GT5 try out left foot braking to control cornering. You won't be disappointed.

I'm confused; I thought left foot braking was using the left foot to breake and right foot for gas? That's how I've been driving on my sims since I havent been able to use my clutch per se

But now that I need to use my clutch I have to learn how to use my left foot to control my clutch and my right foot for gas & brake.

When I used to drive my manual transmission ford mustang that's how I used to roll but since then I've picked up some bad habits from GT5

You just mix and match the braking (and other driving) techniques depending on the corner. That means angle and width of the corner, point of entry, apex and exit.
So sometimes heel toe braking is better and other times when its a fast corner you might want to consider left foot braking (leaving the throttle open far enough not to slow you down to much).

Here is a link but there are many sites with techniques on them. Google and do some reading, there might be some new insights you will gain and things you want to try after.

http://www.driftingstreet.com/braking-technique.html

So left foot braking isn't just braking with the left foot but slowing down while making sure the engine keeps delivering power to the wheels for the acceleration after the apex.

Oh and when you've learned the technique you will be able to shift at the right moments as well. But that's tricky since you need to instinctively know when to let go of the brake and hit the clutch for a shift, and then brake again if needed.

I am going for a drive in GT5 now maybe I should show you guys how I drive sometime. Hit me up on psn if you want. LogiForce86 is my psn name.

You are correct. Left foot = left foot on the brake pedal, right on the gas.

Again, the only time you'll use your left foot for braking in a manual transmission is a corner where you do not have to shift. In a track/race environment, braking, pausing to shift (clutch), braking again will yield you; gravel lunch, tire wall lunch, vegetation lunch, or if done safely a very slow lap time.

Applying braking AND throttle at the same time is another technique that has it's uses but is dependent of the vehicle....and it's outcome. It is in general harder on the drivetrain as it maintains a pre-loading on the components (bogs engine or slips clutch).

Thanks but it looks... crazy.. The shifter is too far away in my opinion... does not look like the real deal...

This is only my initial setup of the shifter position. I was so keen to start using it I just clamped it on and started using it. The weekend is fast approaching and I have an enduro with my club on Sunday so Saturday will be modification day. New pics and vids to follow in the coming days.....

Thankyou Logiforce, Sandboxgod and Elwood for the kind words. I am only an amateur at this and am quite encouraged by this and am going to continue to try and improve. The TH8 (back on topic) has just rejuvenated my love for driving sims and can see a subscription to iRacing 2.0 coming very soon. Will definately add you Logi I usually race around the weekend I'm on GMT +10.

Can anyone advise me, I thought the shifter was supossed to work with ps3 or pc........Would it matter if I bought the pc shifter instead of the ps3 version or should I wait for the Ps3 if I'm using it on the ps3.

Sorry if this has been asked before And thanks for your Help

They are one and the same item as far as I know? Logiforce can you confirm this??

I am yet to connect mine to a PC as I only run Mac's at home and haven't set up my boot camp yet as I never needed Windows , that will change very soon though as I'm keen to get into iRacing.

Anything I've heard about it said it was compatible with both, If that's the case why the two different versions.....I'm so temped to cancel the order and order the pc one

Edit;- cancelling Ps3 th8 order and getting express delivery for TH8 pc/ps3

Thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing more of this shifter.

OK, heres my first attempt :nervous: hope this works....

Did this in a C.R.A.P Racers Lounge this afternoon with GTVirtuoso....it's only short, 1 lap of Laguna Seca in a Gran Turismo 350Z, but it shows the TH8 and pedals in action together and there's a bit of the screen too...

There is only one 'universal' type of shifter. So it doesn't matter if they put it under either pc or ps3, it will definitely work on both.

Background: Both PC and PS3 use the same type of language to talk with the devices you hook up to it, namely the HID (Human Interface Device) protocol whereas the Xbox 360 uses a newly designed XID (Xbox Interface Device) protocol. This makes the devices of a PC compatible with the PS3 and not the Xbox 360. The same reason why PS3 devices are not compatible with the Xbox 360. The reason not every device works is the lack of drivers that need to be implemented into games by game developers. Those are basically the same drivers for the PC, but on the PC you will always have to install them when you plug in your new device for the first time. With the exception if your operating system (like Windows) has these build in you don't necessarily have to install them.
The only difference between the two drivers is that the language used by the processor is different (x86 for PC and Cell for PS3), so they need to be programmed and optimized differently.

Thanks logi. I've placed the order, estimated delivery on the 4 or the 5th

Ive looked around in this thread and I can't find it, whats this lark about a ps3 version only and a pc and ps3 version, will the ps3 only version work with any wheel. I apologize if im being blind, thanks.

I explained that jus now in my previous post. So yes, I have to confirm your assumption of your eye sight. Sorry. ;)
Plus what ^ said.

Thanks guys, I was just skimming around looking for it, must have missed it...sorry :(.

No problem. As long as you try to search for the info it's all good.
There are some people that come onto a forum and just ask a question that's been asked hundreds of times without searching. Which is annoying in my opinion. Luckily you are not like that. ;)

On a side note: I got a tracking code for the shifter but it hasn't been picked up yet by the Belgium post. Which is odd. So yeah, I doubt I'll have it before the weekend.

Edit: Now I look again and it's in Antwerp. Yay. But it will be monday I am afraid. Which is a meh...

Shame it won't be there before the weekend. Very happy to hear that you finally have a tracking number:)..it's well worth the wait though. I look forward to hearing what you think of it aswell :)

I'll be sure to add my 2 cents as usual. I will probably write a small novel again. Maybe make a few vids. I will see but all hopes not lost yet. It might be here tomorrow late in the afternoon, but I am not betting on it.

I'm almost certain it is a single product for both. The box even says PC & PS3 on it. (check out my post on the previous page) I don't understand why amazon UK listed them separately. Or why they are out of stock on the PS3 listing and not the PC.

I've ordered one and it's been dispatched, so I'll let you know for sure tomorrow.

I know for sure and I already answered him as well. Including the background as to why it can be and is a single product. ;)
Have fun with yours btw. Let us know what you think of it. :dopey:

I'm so excited, I can't believe it's actually gonna come tomorrow! I've had my new rig for a month and my replacement gear knob for a week or two in anticipation.

Good to see them finally filtering through and people are going to get there order soon.
@Papaspurs: you'll have to give us a comparison between the stock gear knob and your aftermarket?? I found the stock knob to feel quite good in the hand so will be good to see a variation, and your rig ;)

VirtualR just posted an awesome review: http://www.virtualr.net/thrustmaster-th8-rs-shifter-review

The advanced tuning and calibration features are very cool. You can set up custom boundaries for engagement points and then save them to internal memory. Therefore, your adjustments carry over to the PS3.

Great review by VirtualR đź‘Ť . Spot on.

An observation I made last night while racing online, some of the cars with sequential gearboxes and paddle shift in real life (i.e. AMG sl55 (230) and '07 GTR) DO NOT support the use of the clutch ?? The shifter will still allow you to select gears but there is no way to engage the clutch between shifts. This IMO is proof of PD's commitment to providing an accurate representation of the real world car in the game. Other paddle shift cars that IRL offer a choice to the buyer of a normal H-pattern gearbox (tested with the F430 Scuderia) if you use the clutch for the first shift it recognizes that and allows its use.

The review is so so. I would have liked to see self made pictures or screenshots, videos maybe. And more facts next to what is written on the website.
He just starts with blurring out the spec sheet in a paragraph. Then he comes with his own opinion and that is about it.
All in all it didn't tell me much that I didn't know.
Anyone who read the documents on the support page knew about all of this stuff. I think he forgot to mention the progressive handbrake feature (pc only) as well.

Maybe I was just excited about the calibration feature. I thought that was very cool and didn't realize it had internal memory. Still, while it may not be brand new info to us here, it still seemed like an informative enough review for someone who doesn't frequent GTP.

I do agree, the lack of original photography was really a shame. Isolated PR photography is of limited utility. Action shots, or shots of the internals (without the gates installed) would have been much better.

I hope SimHQ gets one soon. I tend to like their hardware reviews.
