Well, Massa was the first driver since Ivan Capelli twenty years ago to finish a season without so much as a podium ...

Indeed. ;) Still, I'm just saying they've already agreed on his contract for 2012, even though stranger things have happened.

Indeed, since Force India was wrapped up I've been snooping around williams' twitter and website looking for 'clues', and while there isn't anything definitive to be seen (and the images on site are Pastor-heavy), it does smell like Rubens isn't off the cards yet with the way things are presented, I can't really give any examples, but it's an overall vibe thing.

Surely Petrov could've sealed the deal on a Marussia seat by now... he must still have a thumb stuck in a tastier pie.

in regards to news:
I need fresh, Frank, I need NEW (from The Transporter)

Kimi Raikkonen had a contract with Ferrari to race in 2010 ...

This. I thought there was speculation that Kubica was going to take Massa's seat in 2013, because the rumors are suggesting that Sutil may go to Williams for 1 year and then move to Ferrari for 2013. If that happens, it may bugger things up for Kubica.

Honestly, I think most of these rumours of Driver X or Driver Y going to Ferrari to replace Massa are being started by people who are fans of Driver X and Driver Y and want them to continue racing in the sport. Massa's failure to score a podium all year makes him a soft target.

It could be him who goes to Williams and a driver taking Massa's seat for 2012. It's a long shot, but stranger things have happened in Formula 1.

I can't think of anyone that Ferrari might be considering to take Massa's seat. I think they'd rather ride his contract out until the end of 2012, then pick up Sergio Perez.

Why would Ferrari want Perez? I'm honestly curious, not trying to prove a point.

He's part of their "Driver Academy" thingy, it's like Red Bull and their "Driver Development Programme".

That would explain it then. Thanks. 👍

Barrichello back to Ferrari? :sly:

But seriously, various Ferrari people have said that Massa is staying on for next year, but they have strongly hinted that he's going to be replaced at the end of 2012 (Unless he's winning races and in championship contention, he's not going to get a new contract).

There are many experienced and skilled drivers out there that Ferrari could opt for if they intend of replacing Massa now. Sutil is an obvious choice, but then you also have Alguersuari and Buemi who haved both proved themselves as solid drivers with the potential to win races if given the chance in a competitive car (Alguersuari moreso, in my opinion). Then you have a few drivers in bottom teams who despite sources saying they are staying put, they would jump at the chance of a Ferrari seat (The likes of Glock, Kovalainen and even possibly Trulli). Taking Perez or Kobayashi for 2012 wouldn't be a bad move either. Kobayashi has shown excellent racecraft, and Perez has shown excellent qualifying pace and race consistency for a rookie, so neither would be a bad option, if Ferrari are looking for a replacement.

There were rumours a while back about Rosberg, but I think he signed a new contract with Mercedes recently. There were rumours last year that Webber was lining up for a move to Ferrari but I think that's dead in the water too.

It all depends whether Ferrari are able to convicnce Massa to let them buy out his contract.

I agree with 99% of your post, but Kovalainen is staying put. In an interview with the BBC he said that he wasn't ready for Mclaren and it destroyed his confidence. He also said if one of the big teams came calling, he would stay put.

There is a chance that this was all talk as Fernandes and Gascoine were there, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would lie.

To be fair to Heikki, he was reasonably close to Hamilton, but in the refueling days, the team would put Lewis on the race winning strategy, and just fill Heikki up with fuel.

I think he thought he would be a lot closer to Hamilton. They were both well thought of at the start of 2007. They both performed well in their first season. Lewis was in far better machinery though. Heikki got the call from Mclaren and hoped to be a lot closer. One (inherited) win and 7th in the championship when his teammate won the championship was not really what he would have had in mind. 2009 was probably even more tough for him. They both started with an inferior car and Mclaren developed the car like crazy until they had one of the best cars on the grid. It wasn't as good as the Red Bull or the Brawn gp, but was nowhere near as bad as some Hamilton fans like to claim. (I've heard claims from some fans that it was still the same terrible car even when Lewis was winning races in it. Something Lewis himself denies).

Since Heikki has been at Lotus/Caterham, he has seemed completely rejuvenated. Whether he can ever handle the pressure of a front running car is to be seen, but I don't think he would jump at the chance of a front running car.

Heikki just got screwed over by his own team. All of the experimental pieces of bodywork were put on Heikki's car to see if they'd actually work. During all of his time at McLaren I never had the feeling McLaren was really bothered with Heikki. He just seemed to be the perfect experimental bunny, whatever made Lewis' car better.

You actually have a point. That second seat at McLaren was rather anonymous to both the fans and the team until Button joined them. Now, McLaren treats both of their drivers pretty much equally.

You know, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Lewis could have had the same trouble when paired against the double WDC, but he showed quite clearly he wasn't there to be pushed around. And when ALonso noticed the tables had turned against him inside the team he also gave them a lesson of "there's no messing with me" to Ron Dennis. In a way, the same happened to Webber last year and he reacted (but I think he got affected and this year has shown it). Some people aren't as strong mentally as guys like Alonso, so they let their own confidence be shaken. Then, it's an inevitable downhill ride.

One that surprised me (positively) was Nico Rosberg. I genuinely feared that he would get morally crushed by the return of the "golden driver" but it didn't happen. THe kid wasn't impressed and never lost his own speed.

The difference is, Alonso already won 2 championships. He had that behind him, pushing him forward.

I'd be willing to place a small bet that Michael will beat him this year though. Year 1; Nico thrashed Michael causing everyone to sit up and realize what a great driver he is. That is, if they didn't already know that already.
Year 2; Nico still beat Michael, but this time only be a handful of points.

Year 3; The year Michael finally asserts himself over Nico?

Or rather;

Year 3: Nico finally gets a car that is able to turn a wheel and drives towards his first victory.

I don't really care how strong Michael will perform, but it's nearing about darn time Nico gets to drive a competitive car.

Oh, and about Sutil being booted: He is german. How hard do you think it is for germans to find drives elsewhere but F1? Just driving to work during the morning is a motorsport for some of those guys if you've ever driven through Germany !

Ok, here are all the rumors I've picked up today:

Williams negotiating with Kobayashi (this has come after the Sauber tweet)

Williams announce other driver today (or in my book, within 24hours).

Apparently Senna was at the Williams factory on thursday, word of mouth, nothing official. True or not, this is both helpful and useless info, but somehow worth mentioning

Awesome, can't wait for Williams' announcement. 👍

Kobayashi isn't going anywhere right now. He's staying at Sauber. Also, Williams commented about wanting a "more experienced" driver than Maldonado. Senna barely fits that bill. Unless Williams were counting experience by individual races.

Please, please, make it be Bruno Senna :D (and this coming from a guy with 110% respect for Rubens, but I think it's time for him to allow younger guys the same chance he had).

I see your point.

That would be awesome. 👍

They should get one of the bumped toro rosso drivers.

Thinking about it, Alguersuari would be the better option. I reckon he'll wind up at HRT though.

I think Alguers going to HRT will be the best thing that's happened to them, and I think he's capable of making them look less of a joke using his driving ability. I'm sure he'll go there.

I find the Kobi-to-Williams rumor highly unlikely, I figure we all do, it doesn't make sense at the very least.

One thing is for sure, I don't think I'm going to be in any major rush to lose sleep for work the next day if Petrov's racing for Marussia.
