From what I read, they tried burning Ammonium Dichromate with Mercury(II) Thiocyanate pellets underneath, releasing gas which created those tentacles.

They make fireworks that do that. Call them snakes or something. They start out as little pellets that look like big pills.

I don't know which gif it is but something is seriously hogging the bandwidth.
